Genik's On The Go
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ต.ค. 2021
Our goal is to sail around the world. To get there however, we have to finish our diy project sailboat. As we live in the cold north of Ontario, Canada, there isn't a lot of time when the weather is right for boat work. Follow our journey, including our trips to keep the kids entertained, experience the world, and to make some connections... oh, and possibly source some parts. We renovate properties to turn an income, so we can get on the boat sooner. Join us for all that life throws at us in our journey.
Our Other Dirty Little Secret… A Mega Project To Complete In Order To Sail Away
As much as we would like to be in a hurry to set sail on our DIY Sailboat Build, there is one mega project that has to be completed before we can leave. Today, I walk you through that project, as well as offer up my 12 tips that will save you money when working on an investment property. This is not our first build, and likely won't be our last.

I am working on it though, and it's nearly ready. I just don't want to put out crap. So, let me know if you're itching for a...
The Phillip Berman Story and How Balance Catamarans Was Born: Annapolis Sailboat Show Series

Phillip Berman is the owner and president of Balance Catamarans. During the Annapolis Sailboat Show, I sat down with Phil to learn about his background and how Balance Catamarans was born. This story is quite interesting in my opinion, and if I am ever in the market and able to afford a Balance Catamaran, you can bet that's what I will be sailing. Our Latest Adventure: Project Sailboat Unveiled! Episode 1
Watching this a few months after I filmed it makes me happy, because there has been quite a bit of progress made. The more progress we make on this place, the closer we get to being able to put all our attention to the boat.
Are you talking about 1 part or 2 part paints? They are vastly different products.
This is a 2 part paint.
@@geniksonthego8963 K. Thanks!
You’ve really stepped up your editing game. Well done!
Thank you for the compliment. I'm trying to get better with each video.
So glad to have met you there. It really is an awesome place to meet likeminded folks.
Absolutely loved meeting you too! Can't wait to meet up again.
I was sweating today while sanding...(Im in Florida) Your nose makes me Thankful to be sweating. Im going with Alexseal paint been waiting all summer to get the temp and humidity lower. Enjoyed your video.
Thanks for watching. I wish we were in Florida (right now anyway) so we could be painting. I have heard great things about Alexseal. I also found out that acetone is not a good choice, and we should have used denatured alcohol.
Love your name as well!
Love the walk up on cam at 1:52
Thanks!
Love that thumbnail! And the donkey Kong bit!
I wanted Murray to do like a sanding disc shuffle like people do with cash, but he was too busy.
all part of the process! fairly certian ive probably sanded away thousands of dollars worth of epoxy, wheb i bought the piece of teak for the wheel i made the board was so expensive i figured out it cost 86 cents worth of sawdust i made just to cross cut the piece once
They don't say "bring out another thousand" for nothing. Every mistake, it's probably better not to calculate.
@ yeah i dont add up what i spend on the boat more than id ever dreamed of, ill probably have almost 80-100000 into it by the time its all said and done
@ yeah, it can get out of hand pretty quickly.
@ i wouldnt call it out of hand its sort of just is what it is, it takes what it takes, at this point its a new boat essentially at a fraction of the price i couid buy a new boat for
Maybe spray painting or blowtorching the paint could eliminate bubbles in the paint and give it a controlled environment to dry off. That's what I would do with epoxy in my projects.
Maybe. I also found out acetone is bad for it.
@geniksonthego8963 I agree since it dries off much quicker than other solvents.
Thanks for watching! Watch to the end for tips to avoid the poor outcome we had, and for a blooper that cracks me up every time i watch it.
As long as you have a reason to make your own navy you can own as many as you like.
That's my new excuse..
@@geniksonthego8963 let me know if you need to hire a designer or a sniper in the navy.
Great interview with Balance! Also, who is that Aussy guy 😉
Thank you! I tagged his channel in the description now @prophecytrimaransailing 😃
nice work getting it painted i still havent gotten mine painted times ticking on my weather window although im indoors so i can heat
@@storyofstargazer218 good luck with your paint job. I would love to have even a tent over the boat, but it's really not in the ideal location to be erecting such a structure.
@ mines just 2x4 on 4 foot spacing then tarped just a simple building at the time i think it was a couple grand to build probably twice as much now but i couldnt imagine trying to do it with out it honestly a tarp structure or a boat whats the difference i feel like either is an eye sore to most
@@storyofstargazer218 we are going to be shrink wrapping it with a structure on the deck, so we can keep working through the winter. It would have helped with the finish if we hd even just done it before the last coat.
@ i have to remind myself im going to be sailing and abusing it and using it i gotta remember itll probably only look this good once hahah so dont sweat the small things kids will be running around the deck leaving foot prints regardless
Aquaholics Anonymous needs to be a thing... I have to extend a huge thank you to Balance Catamarans and Phil Bernan for sharing your story and footage with me. Also, thanks to Graeme Henderson for connecting me with Phil.
With the amount of new fiberglassing we had done, we could have done gelcoat on the decks. We ended up using AwlGrip and I can tell you that it is likely not the end of our paint work. Spring will tell us if we need to redo it, or just fix the one spot that seemed to have an issue.
Since painting, we have noticed one spot that has what look like warts. Do you know what this could be caused by? We sanded it off and repainted, and it happened again.
Quite surprised to see there are hands on classes for things you do on boat. I would surely be the "kid in the candy store" there bombarding people with questions.
Yeah, it's amazing
Haha Murray mixing paint like he’s pouring a cup of coffee! I love it!
@@graeme-sailingskeptic lol, except he doesn't drink hot beverages. He's a bit weird in that respect. But I drink enough coffee for both of us.
@@geniksonthego8963😂
This was a challenging task. Let me know if you have ever painted a boat and suffered similar challenges.
Love these two the best!
Great seeing the girls getting involved. Have fun at Annapolis, fingers crossed for the award 🥰⛵️
Thank you so much. They had a blast.
The girls really enjoyed working on the boat with us. Thanks for watching. Let us know what you thought of today's episode, or how you would improve it.
Oh no! Both of you poorly and bubbling paint. Gett well soon guys, I'm feeling your pain......literally 🧡
Thank you! With any luck, we may get there tomorrow. One step forward, two steps back. Nothing good ever comes easy.
Well done, they look amazing. So much easier if you do them at home rather than onboard lol
@@SailingSVCordelia thank you. I couldn't imagine trying to cut or sew all that on board.
Really is a huge boat. Primer looks good, well done on the sanding. Such a boring job 😅
You've got that right. Second cot of high build went on today, so monday will be sanding and top coat if the weather holds out.
Hey guys, are you in Thunderbay? Thats a huge job you've got there. I've just subscribed and will go back and watch a few videos. We're British cruisers, however our son and his young family live in Thunderbay and it made me wonder if that's where you live. ⛵️🥰
Hey! Yes, we are in the westfort area of Thunder Bay. Nice to hear of a connection. If you're ever in the area, feel free to send us a message and we can meet up and show you the boat.
@@geniksonthego8963 Omg, we were there 4wks ago, it would have been awesome. I'll make sure to let you know when we're back visiting again. Btw, my son has his own Carpentry Business, Royco, if you ever need help. His work is outstanding 😁. Anyway, I'll start watching your videos later tonight ⛵️
@SailingSVCordelia that's too bad we missed you. I will check out his business, might need some cabinetry work. I subscribed to your channel, looking forward to watching.
Love the progress so far. Slightly jealous of this adventure you're on.
Thank you so much! It means a lot.
@@michaelpeace4025 always room for visitors once we set sail. You are always welcome.
Next week, the girls learn how to body filler the boat. We can't wait to get this boat in the water, so it's all hands on deck.
The primer turned out really well so far. Let us know what projects you're working on.
Yes its also how electroculture works. Fools like plants by using static electricity. Like I dose right before a thunder storm. Making the plant grow faster because is think its about to get a lot of rain soon
That's something I didn't know. Cool.
I was just explaining this to my husband the other day in the car, and I told him that even though they were not calling for rain, it was definitely coming you just have to pay attention to nature.
Exactly! My dad told me this when I was a kid, and no word of a lie, if the leaves turn up, it's only a matter of hours.
What kind of boat are you repairing ?
@@mrbrown6421 we are building (or rather finishing) a Bruce Roberts Spray.
We will be doing this at some point too!!
Just remember... cold showers when you're done, before changing the water to warmer, otherwise you will itch for days.
Hopefully you won't have too too much sanding.
@@geniksonthego8963 we do…just about done grinding our entire bottom down to bare fiberglass and prior to that our chainplates out…it’s been itchy! Baby powder helps tho prior to work!!
@@SailingPAPILLON oh wow! That is a lot of sanding. I hadn't heard the baby powder trick yet, so I will have to try that.

This was a lot of work.
Thanks for watching
Thank you for watching.
Thank you for watching. Your feedback is very much appreciated, so please leave a comment.
I dont care how unfinished my boat would be its not going i. Water without a bikge pump, this is just silly and dragmatic for attention
We had a tarp shed over it and if you watch the video, it shows why there is water going into the boat now. We take precautions to try to prevent water, but on the hard, without a shed, it's impossible.
also, it's not going in the water with no bilge pump, the water is coming from above. There is a hole that it would normally trickle out of, but the boat is bow heavy at the moment, so it can't trickle out.
Rain...hard to deal with somedays
Sure can be. Once we lost the shed overtop, it's near impossible to keep it out. Luckily, the boat has a pretty decent bilge, so it's not getting into anything of importance.
just found your channel! love it and look forward to more videos. I hope your channel continues to grow and will continue watching your videos! :)
