Hey Friends. My name is Jarle. and this channel follows me on the journey of creating a game as a solo project alongside my career, I'll be sharing progress on the game and what I've learned a long the way when it comes to living a productive healthy and positive life.
My Recent Gambling Addiction and How I Overcame It
Ahh very happy to get this video out and also very happy with how it turned out. As I'm writing this realise that my last video was about not quitting things and this one is about quitting things. 😬
00:00 Intro
04:31 How I Started
05:10 The Addiction Experience
07:34 The Recovery Period
10:43 How I Quit
18:41 General Advice on Quitting
Here is the full Quote I mention in the video:
“It means that one must earn the right to hold oneself as one’s own highest value by achieving one’s own moral perfection-which one achieves by never accepting any code of irrational virtues impossible to practice and by never failing to practice the virtues one knows to be rational-by never accepting an unearned guilt and never earning any, or, if one has earned it, never leaving it uncorrected-by never resigning oneself passively to any flaws in one’s character-by never placing any concern, wish, fear or mood of the moment above the reality of one’s own self-esteem.”
It's from the book the Virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand. I know she is a bit of a figure and I will say when I read this book most of it didn’t jive with me at all' the only thing I really got out of it was this quote, but I like this quote a lot 🥹

Felt like given how long I have been gone and how it probably seems like I had quit it's only appropriate to make a video about (not) quitting. i was the opposite ritalin was very restricting of who i was supposed to be.....i was put on it to make the teachers life less difficult i didnt wanted learn anything they were teaching and it forcibly made me an introvert.....at least i figured it out eventually but it can be poison to those not diagnosed properly like myself
So when you need to concentrate you end up thinking about concentrating

This is an amazing video. Thank you so much for this. I’m 19 and have been struggling with an online gambling addiction for 4 years. There have been long lapses where I’ve been gamble-free, but I’m in a two month span of a pretty terrible “relapse”. This video helps. Thanks again ❤
Thank you for sharing this story. It’s giving me hope.

Really good thoughts man you earned a new subscriber!
you will get back into gambling in 2 months just guarantee
Given that Its been almost 2 years since I quit gambling now I don't think thats too likely but who know 😬
Great video mate
He was that hooked on gambling he put his head on upside down 🙃
What is utterly puzzling to me is that I never heard anyone say "How I overcame gambling addiction? Math! I looked at the expected value, and due to the math of big numbers, this would never make sense."
I think if you look at gambers or gambling addicts as a whole, most of them probably don't have a very firm grasp of the underlying probability and might fall for things like the gamblers fallacy etc. But just talking about myself here I was never in doubt about the math of what was going on. Every spin cost me roughly 4-5% of the bet in expected value and I never saw it as everything different. But fully understanding that its a losing proposition doesn't change the fact that its a game of chance with ups and downs and that can lead to a rush etc. Like if you were to change the odds from being in the casinos favour to the players favour it doesn't change the experience and its' the experience that hooks you (or at least me), not the expectation of making a profit.
Any side effects of Ritalin?

Great video and incredible advice
Great video. it's never late to quit.
Great video
thank you for sharing your story and reflections. It was great to see another one of your videos pop up in my feed.
Hey man, this is rough. Now I understand why you stopped posting regularly. Thank you for sharing that emotional moment in your video-it really highlights the depth of your struggle and how serious this issue is. Addictions of all kinds are extremely dangerous for people with ADHD, and there are so many vultures preying on us. I know a friend of my father's (I strongly believe both have undiagnosed ADHD and alcoholism) who has such a severe gambling addiction that he has been forced to sell his family’s apartments multiple times, moving to cheaper ones each time. These casinos, social media platforms, game developers, and producers of addictive foods have figured out how the reward system works and are using this knowledge against us. There's something called the "variable ratio reinforcement schedule" that these systems exploit to target our psychological vulnerabilities. I think the only reasonable strategy is to stay away from potentially dangerous and addictive activities. For me, alcohol has been the most dangerous so far, getting me into trouble multiple times. But at least I've learned my lesson and now try to avoid it as much as possible. Please don’t give up on making your videos-your content is truly impactful. I’m really glad you’re back. Your videos about your experience with getting diagnosed and starting treatment were a big part of what validated my own experience and encouraged me to seek a diagnosis. My story is actually quite similar to yours: I moved to Vietnam and got diagnosed here at 35. I started treatment a few months ago, while also starting work as a software developer, haha. So, your experience has been incredibly helpful and encouraging-thank you! I still struggle with productivity and motivation, even after starting treatment, and I’m looking for more strategies, habits, experiences, and knowledge to help me improve my life after all those lost years. That’s why your content is so valuable and reassuring. Keep going-you’re making a real difference!
Welcome back, and thank you for sharing your story. I don't want to share details, but I have something that needs to be done, so let's try “Tomorrow I’m not doing X anymore, and then I’m done.” I will update msg in 3 months :)
You better stick to your commitment and update this in 3 months, the world is watching! 😬
good job bro, proud of you
Man i don't know why. But i'm happy every time i see you post a video. Your ability to be open and honest about your experiences brings a real level of humanity to your videos. I was diagnosed with ADHD few years ago as an adult and it was refreshing to find your content. Also you do bring a high quality of videography and a good style of editing to your videos. I have a hard time to create and maintain new habits, but I am going to therapy about that. Glad to see you back.
Thanks! And yeah as mentioned I'll go a bit more into detail about habits but one thing I'll just say is that it takes time,. The only thing you can really hope for is that (taking into account the obvious variability with peaks and valleys) that the overall trajectory is going in the right direction.
This video resonated deeply with me. I'm so glad you feel like you're in a better place, I hope to be able to say the same soon. I don't have a gambling addiction, but it's in the same ballpark. The problem with addiction is that everything comes down like a house of cards. And the catalyst for it is usually just some random event, so regardless of how rational you think you are, you're still at the mercy of something unpredictable, which makes all your logic and rationality moot. I think your explosive metaphors make sense, but for some people healing can only happen after everything has burned down. And that's also why you should probably seek professional help rather than using your friends, or you risk losing them in the process. You've probably already seen it, but in case not, Ze Frank has a great short video called An Invocation for Beginnings. I recommend watching it.
Thanks for the recommendation, and yeah definitely agree about the house of cards which is vulnerable to the unpredictable. All it really takes is 1 bad moment of weakness to take a big step back, which is where I find commitment devices can help because it flips that algorithm around where all it takes is 1 moment of strength and after that you can't make the bad decision.
Waited for an upload. Already: Love the new look. Excited to see the video.
Honestly just curious to hear what people think about this video. Its longer than what I normally post or I guess whats normal for these kind of videos and also editing for this was more high effort and deliberate than what I normally do so curious if that went well ^_^ Oh also if anyone is motivated to attempt quitting something you can post a comment here. I’m not going to offer to be the personal quitting buddy of everyone who watches this, but even something as small as making a youtube comment saying “Tomorrow I’m not doing X anymore and then I’m done” can be the catalyst you need to quit something.
Personally, I would prefer slightly shorter videos with a more precise and focused theme or message. However, for storytelling, it's completely fine to make them a bit longer to cover everything. As for visual effects, I think your content is strong enough on its own. High-quality video, great colors, occasional clips of you doing things, and interesting information are more than enough. But I understand that other people might feel differently. If posting more frequently means spending less time on editing memes, I would prefer that. But if those edits keep you engaged and motivated, then why not?!
@@VladimirSuravtsov Yeah waffled quite a bit on the length of the video, had a few cuts where I brought it down a few minutes but ended up re-adding them, I guess 4 minutes. When a videon nears completion its always a struggle because I know making it shorter almosh inherently makes the video better, but also become atteached to each of the cuts and what they are trying to say 😬 Also waffled a bit on the more lighthearted cutins. Like you say I'm adding them partially for my own enjoyment like many of them are references I know 98% of people wont' get, but a bit fun for those who do ^_^ Will definitely take you feedback with me though and really appreciate you taking the time to write it.
Generally talking about topics like addiction and it’s very open and very in detail so I genuinely enjoyed the video as an addict myself I overcame it also and this video truly is going to help people
I liked the video very much and it's made me realize that someone close may be having troubles with gambling. Perhaps you could tinker with having the edits in a 'screen in screen' format instead of switching from your camera to the edit cut and back to your camera. See which gets people more focused
I wish I could try and see if medication can help me, but sadly I need money to get treated and I don't have money to even eat... My life is over at 32 years old, I'm struggling every day not to kill myself but i'm slowly loosing the battle and I can feel it. If someone reads this and has adhd, please get treated early or it might be too late and take your life like it did with me.
Can you make an update if Ritalin e helped you following through the plans you have organized about day/week structures? Short has Ritalin improved you into a functional freaking human being? I had 9/9 HS score and 6/9 ADD score. Was given Atomoxetin, took away the "loudness" in my head. No improvement in following task in a slightly motivated manner for hours ..
I was tested for ADHD back when I was in 3rd grade or so. They said I didn't have it but, I have a feeling I do have it. Basically, I ended up trying this medication because, I deal with major depression and had tried just about every med possible for it. All I can say is, that it made my life sooo much better. For once I felt like I could focus on whatever task I had been working on. Mood was a lot better and, I actually just felt CALM for once! I thought it was going to make me all wired up, but it was the complete opposite. Just felt at peace, focused and ready to work on whatever I needed too. A good example of how affective this was when I struggled with trying to learn the python programming language. (Or anything in general) While on this med, it was almost like my brain could understand what I was reading! My head wasn't constantly jumping around from thing to thing. I could read a few paragraphs, process what I read and it actually Stuck! I just couldn't believe it. The only downside was the medication stopped being affective after about a month. (I just had the regular IR formula one). I mentioned it to my doctor but, he took me off it. Not really sure if a different version of it would of made it work better or keep working. I'm sad I can't get back to that state of mind again, where my brain actually worked! Is it true that, if you feel calm on these medications, you are more than likely to have ADHD? Maybe one day, I'll be able to try the XR version and see if I can function again.

I'm 42. I just realized in the last few years that I probably have ADHD. I haven't been diagnosed but all the signs point in that direction. I wish I had discovered this sooner as I feel like Ive wasted years of my life struggling to cope with the daily tasks of every day life. I'm single with no real career to speak of. I think its probably time to deal with this, take the first step to get diagnosed so I can get some medications if I need to help me live a normal life.
