Close by where I live, there are probably over a hundred Beetles that are just sitting besides houses etc. Probably 85% of them are cars that have never left the desert. Rust free with cooked interiors, just waiting to be rebuilt. The owners never part with them. They are on their "to do" list. Frustrating to say the least.

I have seen this too many times. There was a place in Moab Utah that was pretty famous for that. I went there about 5 years apart and there was no way to contact the owner. You did a good job, and there is already enough experts that have chimed in here, but I have a question about the engine mount bolt behind the new dog house. I’ve changed all my older VW’s to the through bolt with the threaded insert in the case. Trying the take off the nut to pull the engine with the body on is extremely difficult, so the insert option makes it very easy. Just wondering what your plan is reconcile the problem. It looks you are still using the original style bolt and nut.

    • @midwaygarage

Thanks! you can see here th-cam.com/video/7qPTon2QiOA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=nYtWs37banqIsaQc&t=641 the nut is on the transaxle side, so (in theory) if I remove the nut the engine should be able to slide back enough to get the bolt out.

67 had swing axle with the straight clutch arm. We change those all the time to the straight one and it doesnt hurt anything. Also when it it is the bent arm Once it is tensioned it wont interfere. Just a little hard to get the wing nut started. You will want the wing nut on there at some point . believe me. On clutch cables most of the problems happen in the tunnel behind the pedal assembly. That is where the most stress is. Sometimes in the back because people dont counter hold the clutch cable with vice grips or a 7mm wrench properly. Usually I use vice grips because with 1 hand I can hold them and spin the wing nut. With the Bolt style you cant hold both so it is easier to fray the cable.

Had my fuel inlet come out while changing the hose. Roughed it up with sand paper and reinstalled with thread lock. Added safety wire between the hose clamp and bolt on the far side of the bowl. No problems yet, but yeah I'd rather drill tap some threads for a different fitting. One thing, read on the Samba that Dist. Vac Can hose needs a hook or loop to keep fuel from eating the diaphragm.
