I studied with a jazz historian in university, and we studied these rolls and others. There is every indication and evidence that these were played by Scott Joplin himself, including all of the added notes for style. In fact, it is suspected that he could not include everything he wanted to as recording piano rolls was not such an easy process back then. Many nuances could get lost or changed in the process.

Does yours have an electric pump? Mine does and I’m pretty sure all these little aeolians have one… also I saw in the description that you are going to restore the valves. Mine has a valve that plays, but then doesn’t return to a resting position, leaving the pneumatic stuck on. Do you have any advice for fixing this? Thanks!

Im pretty sure I have asbestos on my vacuum too, but the thing about asbestos is, if you don’t mess with it (destroy, tear, ect.) it won’t be released. At least I don’t think xD

Ah, this must be one of the edited recordings. From Wikipedia: "While Joplin never made an audio recording, his playing is preserved on seven piano rolls for use in mechanical player pianos. All seven were made in 1916. Of these, the six released under the Connorized label show evidence of editing to correct the performance to strict rhythm and add embellishments, probably by the staff musicians at Connorized. Berlin theorizes that by the time Joplin reached St. Louis, he may have experienced discoordination of the fingers, tremors, and an inability to speak clearly-all symptoms of the syphilis that killed him in 1917. Biographer Blesh described the second roll recording of "Maple Leaf Rag" on the UniRecord label from June 1916 as "shocking...disorganized and completely distressing to hear." This is nearly the same piano I have. My nephew loves playing it.

Its interesting to see how it was originally meant to be played. But it's missing the expression, no? Every key is played with the same strength. I guess they didnt have a way to record velocity back then.

Wonderful event, sorry I missed it. Hope I can attend next year. Here's a thought...wonder if anybody in the USA might have a German Hochleistungssirene? I understand that is second only to the Chrysler 180 HP siren. Only seen HLS in videos, not even sure if one exists in the USA, but definitely would be a worthwhile participant if such can be found over here.

Before yet another stuck up doofus, who thinks he can tell people what tempo to set a piano roll's tempo to and complain here about this recording, makes yet another comment, I want you all to know some very important information first: 1. THIS ISN'T ACTUALLY JOPLIN'S PIANO ROLL. It's marked as such on the label (and it's perfectly fine to say it in the title of the video) however this roll was ACTUALLY played by William Arlington who was the chief editor and arranger at Connorized for ragtime rolls 2. Tempo is accurate, this is played at the top of the acceptable tempo range. Also, this Modello is notorious for inconsistent tempo, always has been, always will be, the tempo speeds up and slows down the whole time, that's the wind motor being worn out and needing a rebuild, don't complain about that because there's nothing that can be done 3. "tHe r0lL WaS plAYeD wiTH nO eXPReSsiON" THAT'S NOT THE POINT OF THIS VIDEO!!!
