I believe you were wrong where the St Charles Hotel was in St.Joseph MO. I think it was across the street from where you were shooting! It has been a while since I was by there so I could be wrong!

These present day shots are a little depressing, as if the Depression era never left. What Director Peter Bogdanovich saw when choosing those shooting locations 50 years ago, well, little has changed save for the fact they look even more empty, lonely - and sadder.

It would appear the only thing more depressing than Kansas & Nebraska during the 1930s Great Depression is current-day Kansas and Nebraska.

Like the long walk comparison. Such a shame that the 20 dollar bill shop has gone, and so recently too. What about the other shop where the assistant was conned when he bought the ribbons. Does that still exist?

At 9:26, you can see a post-1954 red stop sign in the background (instead of the black-lettering-on-yellow stop sign design that was appropriate for the period). A rare anachronism in Paper Moon!

Those were great! Well done! Look forward to Part 3 and the scenes where Moses gets chased and beat up in downtown St. Joseph and then hides in the doorway, severely injured. Always wondered where that was shot!? I'm from Omaha so I recognize those types of Midwest downtown buildings and architecture.

I have lived in Hutchinson Kansas for 30 years. He is correct, that building hotel seen at the end is soon to be turned into low income housing apartments off of main Street. The project is said to be completed at the latest by 2026 so if anyone wants to fast forward through the future after this comment and go see the building and the new renovations be our guest! Hutchinson citizens are always pleased to accommodate their history. While you're here check out the Reno county museum not too far from that area and the cosmosphere space museum that has also added some fun areas on the inside including a kids play zone! We have hundreds of hotels/motels still to date. Be sure to book your reservation early if you plan to come in March as they are packed for March Madness since we are also the home of the NJCAA tournaments! Don't forget while youre on main to check out Smith's Market, Holly's Sweet Treats and the historic FOX theater!

Great video, thank you! Paper Moon remains one of my favorite movies. It's so beautifully shot. Being from New Jersey, which is becoming more crowded by the minute, it's hard to believe there are places in the US that are so remote, with dying towns that have nothing around them.

I posted a similar comment on the part 2 video showing additional shooting locations from the film. It wasn't hard to see why Bogdanovich chose these locations 50 years ago, in the early seventies - it was as though the Depression never left these parts. And the same can be said for today - only it seems even lonelier and more vacant and empty now. We're well beyond Depression: small town America in the Great Plains has largely been abandoned. Paper Moon almost seems like a bit of cinematic romanticism about the era now, certainly compared to the present and how these locations have fared decades later.

Thanks for posting. I love this movie. As I watched I began to think of ancient places and how they are haunted with the past of the people who lived, worked, and died there. They fade over time and are blown away by the wind. When all the people die, all the memories die. This isn't the sad part of life, however. It is just what happens to us all. And that is okay because it is natural. Cheers.

that's my thinking too. in my deep south home state, i see many vacant buildings abandoned, collapsed, or demolished from 100+ years ago. after about 50-80 yrs dead. no memory of those people exists other than a few surviving relatives soon to die themselves. we have many abandoned towns here that have dried up also.

This is fascinating. I love central Kansas. Those that settled there in that harsh environment and eked out a living and raised family there from the late 1800's through the 1970's are TRUE pioneers. My Great Grandfather Joseph Branda lived the remaining days of his life at the Gorham Hotel until he passed in the late 1960's, as I best recall. He had an old pickup that he kept the driver side door shut with a piece of rope. I wish I was older at the time so as I could have had an intelligent conversation with him.

Peter Bogdanovich's Paper Moon in my opinion is truly an American "Fellini style" film. All the supporting characters in the film were virtually unknown at the time and gave a strong mid western flavor that made Paper Moon a box office hit.

I first want to sincerely thank you for taking the time to do all this research. I frankly don't know how I found you but I am thrilled I did. I was involved in the movie business as well as my wife during my 30 working years. I was an corp. advertising photographer who on occasion created movie posters for Disney and Colombia and later Sony Pictures. My wife was the head script reader for Colombia and later Sony. She brought Sex, Lies and Videotapes and The Last Emperor to Sony. Since it's release I have seen Paper Moon at least a dozen times. My dream is to shoot a simular film. Paper Moon was not only a great film but a cash cow for Paramount. Any time you can make 10 times your investment on a film you've got the Studio's attention.

Sad that no one has clicked a like here. Especially the residents of this town. I'd be tickled pink, orange and rainbow colors if someone came back for a view. And the snippets of production-gone-wrong are quite amusing.
