When I enlisted in 84 I many of the senior petty officers were like Nicholson. Starting out as an E3 you would looked up to these old salts, especially the lifers. When you went out to the fleet these guys knew their $4!t and you had to earn their respect. The navy has changed so much but I'm glad to have served back then.
Rusty James' out-of-body experience deserves ALL THE PRAISE, not least because it was done with practical effects - digital was only in its fetus stages back then. Nowadays, they'd just have some underpaid programmers "do it in post".
Idiot ,his favourite film ???he dosnt even know they are Rumble fish Siamese fighting fish.certainly not pirahanas .idiot
The key to the film is the ambiguous subjectivity: are we seeing things from the perspective of the Motorcycle Boy, Rusty James --or maybe someone else? When we see the MB wandering down the street, you will hear a shrill ringing under the film's music: the ringing in his ears. When Rusty views his brother, he is both idealized, but concerning: MB is "old for his years" and tortured, and yet he can do anything. He is a hero and a tragic figure.
There are numerous anachronisms also. The story seems to be set in the 1950's, but there are cars from the 1980's in several shots. At one point, Rusty James is playing a video game. It gives the impression that the characters are ghosts stuck in time. The frequent use of clocks in and ticking sounds in the score add to this vibe.
Cinephile--one of my favorite movies. So deep & full of layers. Expands my mind!
Great movie, watched it many times. Just recently I finally decided what all the clocks meant. I think it meant that the motorcycle boy is running out of time. He’s becoming an adult and doesn’t fit in to society.
I was like rusty james in high school not bragging I was a lost cause But I read this book.. Probably one of the 5 I’ve read in my life ..pretty ironic… it is truly a masterpiece… ❤❤
Basically this is a review/analysis I made of rumble fish back in 2022. It was pretty amateur and I didn’t properly script all of it, so I hope to do a more polished analysis in the future. But until then this is the video I’ll have on my channel.
Keep at it!
Saw this in 83, I was 19. Saw Bikeriders last week at 60. Bikeriders sucks
Rumble Fish is a metaphor for teenage youth. Dropping them in the river is the only way to escape; i.e. the Motorcycle Boy is freed.
Yeah .. they were Siamese fighting fish They are the title characters so I figured get that right
I saw this when it came out at the theater. The Outsiders had just made a big impact, and Rumble Fish was a whole nother story. Yes the cinematography was great. But dont dismiss the soundtrack that was played, and produced by the drummer of The Police, Stewart Copeland. If you have lived a life similar to theirs it hits home better. Rusty James was trying to find himself as a young man. Like all of us, but he had the odds stacked against him. Also having an alcoholic father, and a non existent mother didn't help. The motorcycle boy, his brother, came back to help guide him in i.m.o. . Because he had been through that rough divorce and split of the family at an older age. The motorcycle came back to guide his brother.
I love the review. I just wanted to ad that the name of the motorcycle boy was said once - russell
Wrote and dedicated a song to Bruce, called Hail to Bruce Campbell, its on our channel.
Very nice review. However, one major mistake. The fish were not Piranhas. They were Siamese fighting fish. Another small mistake you called Motorcycle boy Motorcycle man? I am a proud owner of a theater poster autographed by Mickey. It hangs in my dining room and I will never sell it at any cost. To me its priceless. Also you never mentioned Motorcycle boy cannot see colors. But he sees the color of the fish. I never understood what this represented. Perhaps he sees the fish in color because he understands Rusty so well that the fish come alive in color. An interesting tidbit here is that Tulsa was known for its gangs and violence in poor white areas. I believe part of Rumblefish is loosely based on fact. Anyway this film is in my top 10 all time. The ending reminds me of Quadrophenias ending. The scenery is stunning..along with stellar photography is The amazing soundtrack by the Police drummer Stewart Copeland and the beautifully eerie vocals of Stan Ridway of Wall of Voodoo on Don't box me in. If you like SE Hintons work, please indulge yourself in this amazing film. Coppolla could have done a huge production after The Godfather trilogy and Apocolypse now. But he took a step back to do a real edgy Indie type of film before it was cool to call films Indie. This film also launched the careers of so many actors. Some became huge stars, and others disappeared into obscurity. I give it Five, yes, five stars. A masterpiece.
Remember this was a reading book we did in high school or middle school...for some reason it was called "The motorcycle boy"
Harpo has the funniest scenes!
These were all great but why wasn’t this clip included th-cam.com/video/rt59rjadYeI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-CqPlP1W9Hse7Vzs
i liked the movie, but i feel like it could have been better. i had to skip so much ahead since it was so weird. i hated how they dubbed over it even though it was the same, and i couldn’t freaking stand the Motorcycle Boy’s voice. and i didn’t get how he floated up after getting beat up. like what? so basically it’s ok, could be better, but it’s not worth 15$ to buy.
The motorcycle boy reigns !!!
NOT PIRANHAS. Did you look at the fish, there like Asian goldfish. At the end did you think he released piranhas in the water?Smoke some more crack buddy😃
Fighting fish not piranha.....
The movie was a homoerotic pile of crap that was grasping pathetically
Motorcycle Boy Reigns
Thats called a vision.
this movie was mind blowing. I loved it. such a tragedy.
Thanks for your review of this great movie based on the S.E. Hinton novel. So many great actors. Sophia Coppola played Diane Lane’s younger sister. If viewers haven’t read Hinton’s novels, check out her earlier novel, “The Outsiders”. Coppola did that movie as well and used several actors in that earlier film…I’m sure most are recognizable. Maybe edit out the “ummms” next time
Haha Yeahh It’s pretty obvious I just kinda winged it without a script.
@@cinephile6914 like uhm yeah!
I thought that was her
@cinephile6914 Your ideas were interesting, but you admit yourself that it leaves something to be desired when you "wing it". Shame. Here's a thought: Redo it with emphasis on 3 parts: characters, cinematography, and deeper meaning. You'd have a winner. ✌️✌️
RUMBLE FISH ,S.E. HINTON. Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Matt Dillon, he's really good actor. I love him .♥️
Cute Rusty James he's cool. ♥️💋 Rusty James .♥️
Love,Love S.E. Hinton.
How does he go from a masterpiece like apocalypse now to a crappy looking student film like this with some bad overdubbed dialogue?
I think Rumble Fish is a better movie than Apocalypse Now. I know Francis Ford Coppola has said Rumble Fish is his best movie, and he has never said that about Apocalypse Now. Sofia Coppola has many, many times said Rumble Fish is the favorite of her father's movies; other film-makers have said the same. Most of my friends who work in cinema believe it is a better movie than Apocalypse Now. It is not as ambitious, hubristic or bombastic as Apocalypse Now, but is more integrated, creative, more innovative, more perfect. And it is more fun to watch I believe.
It is better, but I still like gf 2 the best
Nice work
Hey thanks man
I read the book in school 🏫
Best movie Coppola ever made
interesting analysis bro, thanks for making it - my top 3 fav movies ever
Thanks man. Same honestly one of my favorites as well.
i think the fish need to be free. mc boy thinks if u can get out of the city and be free u won t do violence and that why he wants to free the fish.... this is the threat to the policeman
I agree. Honestly that part of the film I should’ve explained better. I kinda just brushed Over it in retrospect.
@@cinephile6914 I'm actually really glad you did the video. I especially like the color blind aspect of the film that you brought up. Which is why MCb does so well in the black neighborhood. He's color blind . He was called a prince in exile shooting pool with the brothers... His love for Rusty is probably the thing that I really love the most in the film. I've been thinking about talking about this movie on my channel a little bit too. In fact, I might make a video tomorrow... It won't be as good as yours.. you did very well putting all the scenes into your video. I really enjoyed it.... When I saw rumble fish for the first time as a boy, I had a feeling of its power but my mind was too young... I knew that. I liked it though
Thanks I appreciate it. I’m sure your review will be great.
That cop was inferior to mc Rourke
@@Hoppinson mcboy is so full of love and respect for other humans and creatures. ironic his blindness lets him see the truth....
The bettas are also called Siamese fighting fish, they are not piranhas.
Haha yeah I realized after making it I got it wrong
it wasn't the Motorcycle Boy's motorcycle either. He stole it. @@cinephile6914
Brisco County jr.
Best movie ever!
Yeah totally understandable. Definitely one of my favorites.
Criminally underrated movie.
I KNOW RIGHT
Seriously, one of the best movies ever made.
The only man to defeat spiderman (See part one for his defeat by bruce)
Ah yes. Takes me back to the early 90s when everyone used to say “oh yeah. Be like Fred Astaire and dance” but there was absolutely zero video footage of this human and you have to freaking wait until TH-cam to have any idea who this human is.
Where's part 2?
LOVE LOVE S.E. HINTON
I wish Briscoe would have ran longer. I loved that show.
Yeah that show was great
Cool
I'm more of an outsiders guy myself not gonna lie
this is a much better deeper piece sodapop....
