Our Offbeat Life
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 พ.ย. 2019
Welcome to our digital nomad worldschooling life! We took a page from Marie Kondo, sold everything that didn't bring us joy and left Chicago in 2019 and embarking on a road trip through the Eastern United States. From there, we took a one-way cruise to Asia, hitting Hawaii, Guam, and even Borneo before landing in Singapore. We then jaunted off to Indonesia, mainland Malaysia, and even Myanmar.
We made friends with other traveling families along the way, then found ourselves stuck in Malaysia for 13 months during the pandemic. But we finally broke free, taking a pit stop in the US to get vaccinated and then skipping down to Mexico.
Now, with our Toyota 4runner, we're traversing through the Americas. Our adventures have included countless epic moments, including exploring Mexico and Central America through November 2022 before landing in Colombia.
Join us as we continue to explore South America. What happens next? Who knows! But for now, we're living life one epic journey at a time.

What species is this penguins? Looks like they don't have pouches like Emperor pinguins.
It’s a gentoo penguin!
Love the video!
Thank you for the information! We’re considering worldschooling in a year or twos time.
We have been considering home schooling while traveling, so it is nice to get tips! We recently took a two week trip with our then four year old (now five) through Germany and France and tried to find teachable moments and have him involved in the navigation. Thanks for sharing!
Marmite
how do you like to eat Marmite?
As a young lad in N.Z.,we grew up marmite, before coming to Australia and having Vegemite, but I prefer a even mix of better and the spread, especially when you have cheese on the bread.
ooh we haven't tried vegemite toast with cheese yet...putting that on the to do list!
Vegemite girl here 🙋♀️🙋♀️. Glad to see you put the tiny smidge on for the taste test 😅
I know, a little goes a long way!
Thanks for sharing! We’re considering world schooling. Are you part of any Facebook Group?
Yes we are. I like Worldschooling Central - A Family Travel Community - Education with Travel
Happened to me too in October sone years back. Going to have to travel the other direction one day to get it back. 🤔
We have it figured out. We just won't be going back. We will stay in the future.
Thanks for the wonderful chat David, and being patient with my internet and lighting issues (welcome to travel life, right?!).
Right! It was a fun interview. I enjoyed chatting with you.
I am having this problema now. What is in it for the bees?
Bees like a higher sugar level than hummingbirds, so offering them a separate sugar water area can keep them away from the feeders. We slowly moved the bee feeder further from the hummingbirds' feeder to help them all stay separated.
I have tried everything be solutions. Everything move the hummingbirds to be fat. They don’t drink the apple juice. They rather have the feed and my poor hummingbirds don’t know which way to go.
Have you tried using a higher concentration of sugar water? We did 1:4 for the hummingbirds but put 1:1 in the bee feeder. Bees like a higher sugar level than hummingbirds, so offering them a separate sugar water area can keep them away from the feeders. We slowly moved the bee feeder further from the hummingbirds' feeder to help them all stay separated.
This is ridiculous
Sorry you feel that way. We've been unschooling to various degrees for 5 years now and our son has learned coding and other "high level" skills not taught in many schools. He's also learning Japanese, all by his own choice. So we know it works, but it's certainly not for everyone. :-)
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Be sure to try the ice cream if you ever make it to Argentina!
i only watched part of this video. an hour is way to long to discuss this topic. it is very important but maybe these folks are looking for YT analytics than anything else. i have lived expat for 17yrs. 9yrs working in the middle east and living in asia. then retired in 2016 and living in south america and asia. IF you are going on vacation for a month or so or this 6 month digital nomad OK. that is one thing. IF you are retired or go more than a year remember this of saftey wing: very IMPORTANT they do not do direct billing. i would not have Expat insurance that does not. maybe for 6 months or less. Allianz and Cigna have direct billing. go to bangkok, manila, bogata or mexico city and city dozens of hospitals. that slip and fall and knee surgery for $5,000? depending on your policy. mine is 10% up to $2000 out of pocket. hand them the card and walk out a few days later paying $500 of the that $5000 bill. serious injury: how would you like to be laying in the hospital seeing the daily bill add up and it adds to your stress? each morning you are more stressed and trying to get better. a 65yoa colleage/US citizen living in the phillipines. goes to singapore for a conference. chest pains. singapore hospitals are not inexpensive like PI or thailand. 3 stents. 2 nights ICU and 4 nights private room per his insurance. $14,000 which is cheap comared to the US. from the moment he got to the ER Allianz said "we pay everything up to 1millionUSD". his deductible was like $750 and felt good going home OK. sure some can shell out $5,000 or $7,500 and now the "hope to get remburment' process. you broke your hand/arm now type at the computer with one hand.
You raise some valid points about how insurance works. We actually don't really worry about analytics because we want to make helpful content for humans, and we felt an hour wasn't enough to cover everything so there'll be more insurance-related videos coming down the pipe. Brodi worked in insurance for over a decade before we became digital nomads. Many insurance companies don't direct bill, so Safety Wing isn't alone in that practice. They came through solidly for several of our traveling friends who needed repatriation flights when borders closed in 2020, so despite their (common) billing practice we know they are a legit company that offers quality coverage. That said, different folks need different types of insurance, so while we like and use Safety Wing - as do several of our friends - it's not the best fit for everyone. People should certainly do their own research before choosing any insurance plan for their travel needs.
Id put that dish farther away 😅
Yes, agreed! We started it near the hummingbirds to get the bees interested and moved it further each day until there was a lot more separation.
I love your balcony and the beautiful view.
Us too!
Grear informaton. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Move the bee food farther away but not too far, just not in your porch space unless you like them that close😊
That's great advice. Thank you. We were thinking of slowly moving it a little further away each day.
are you old enough to upload videos on youtube? lol

Looks good to me 👍 you’ve got a honey bee hive nearby and they are happy now😂😂
Yes, I think so. There wasn't a lot of rain earlier this season so there aren't as many flowers as usual so we needed to do something for them.
@@ouroffbeatlife that’s very thoughtful, gotta keep those lil guys going 🙌
Yes we love the bees! <3
Looks to me like you did it perfectly. Both are fed.
Yes, I think so. Thankfully, they don't seem aggressive at all.
I have that problem too ! I bees love me.but they definitely see a pest !😊
so coooooool
I agree
Hi there, I saw your TH-cam [ Our Offbeat Life ] channel video, You have uploaded many beautiful videos. But your video doesn't get views and subscriptions. This is because your title, keyword, tag, and thumbnail are not properly SEO. As an SEO expert, I understand your videos are not SEO properly. why are you not solving these problems? Your channel is not progressing due to these issues. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks and Regards, Mahmud
Thank you for your concern. We are making these videos/podcast to help people not for any SEO reasons. We want to produce helpful content for full time travelers.
So lovely
Thank you, they are wonderful
This is great - we just started 1.5 months ago. Curious as to how do you find these places to stay within budget? Do you have to stay there for a few months in order to get apartments, homes, villas at the rate of $600 - $700 USD? And second question, where is the funnest place y'all spent Christmas? Thanks!
We stay in budget for accomodation by booking a place for a at least a month. Rates are generally discounted for longer stays like that. We also tend to avoid super touristy places, favoring central Mexico over the coasts for example, because anywhere Americans or Canadians frequent (in Latin America) tend to be a lot pricier. For Christmas, we've spent it in Malaysia, the US, Colombia, and Antarctica the last 4 years. They were all pretty amazing in their own way but Antarctica was epic! We have a series of shorts from Dec 2023/Jan 2024 that shows more about that, and we're working on some videos. There's also a couple blog posts on our website about it!
How did you like Uruguay? Ive heard its kinda boring and not many people?
Uraguay was nice but it wasn't our favorite. It's the priciest country in South America, so we weren't inclined to spend a ton of time there. :-) The countryside is pretty, but Montevideo was not. At least not the places we visited the 2x we were there.

@@ouroffbeatlife hmm okay two guesses. What is honey water? Or how to make sugar cane tea for birds.
@@goofyshorts5508 Simply, sugar and water.
I hope they all become like this with her!
