Indians see religious tolerance as a central part of who they are as a nation. Across the major religious groups, most people say it is very important to respect all religions to be “truly Indian.” And tolerance is a religious as well as civic value: Indians are united in the view that respecting other religions is a very important part of what it means to be a member of their own religious community.

Part 1: My experience with Iskcon Iskcon in IIT/NIT operates as a student club with a different name. For eg: In NIT Bhopal Iskcon operates as “Inspire Club”. The same goes the case with me. In the first year, they came disguised as a club that promised personality and skill development. Many students attended their first session, it was taken by IIT alumni, and we weren’t aware at that time, that he was one of the Prabhu of Iskcon. As sessions went on, they slowly began teaching their philosophy and the number of students kept on reducing. I thought they were teaching about God, so what’s the issue in leaving it. BUT I WAS TERRIBLY WRONG! Here comes the first point - Iskcon disguises itself as a normal student club to lure students to join them. No matter what argument you put forward, this is an unfair mean. Covid came, colleges shut down, I was still in contact with them, the Prabhus would call me once in a week and feed me with their philosophy. We had weekly sessions and by then I knew I was associated with Iskcon, but I continued. Then in August 2020, one online camp - Utkarsha was conducted for students. First of all, to lure more students, they marketed that participants will be given a certificate from the University of Melbourne, as this event was in association with them. Let me tell you, this was a blatant lie, participants never received any certificate, but Iskcon gained even more students. What did they tell in the camp? Well, I’ll elaborate in the second section. I started feeling uncomfortable with their philosophy and they began pestering me even more. Now they would call me, and ask me to do certain “Sevas”. If I would not answer their one call, 2-3 people would call me 10 times within 10 minutes. Trust me, this is not an exaggeration. In the name of Seva, they were extracting work from students. In my first year, they would praise me, but as I reached the second year, I was told to praise my first years, so that they could continue. I felt betrayed, I felt I should have left this cult long before. Recently, I did the sevas of newsletters, of making quizzes for their camps and they have become more adamant. If I am attending an important meeting of another club, and missing their meetings, they spam my WhatsApp, saying their meeting is more important, I should leave all other clubs and whatnot. I have remained with them for more than 1.5 years, attended many sessions. As of now, I am somewhat stuck, I have left all their groups but seems like they have not noticed this, recently I was asked to a Seva once again and I cannot ignore their calls, as they keep on calling relentlessly.

These movements are man-made and have nothing to do with the authentic teachings of Krishna! Hinduism in itself is beautiful, but cults have come out of this religion. Rituals, and outdated ideologies are prevalent. My prayers are with you! These groups tend to isolate and control their members! Concerning indeed.

Many devotees operated as if they and ISKCON were above the law, and by this I mean not just the law in a strictly legal sense but also in the sense of the basic moral laws that govern civilised behaviour, especially among those who claim to be religious. Many devotees seemed to have taken the passages in scripture that say that anyone engaged in Krsna's service is without faults and beyond reproach1 as a license to engage in, or at least look the other way from, all kinds of criminal and immoral behaviour, and that this was justified in the name of Krsna's service. Anyone who's been around ISKCON over its lifetime will know what I'm talking about, and I need only use the slang term 'scam-kirtana'2 to give you one example.
