But ratchet straps only ratchet 1 direction. The flaw I see is when you release to lower. It will free fall. Be careful.

So I attempted your way but on my JL there’s no where safe to grab the S hooks?? So decided to actually only use two ratchets in the front but run them through the Jeep to the back. Then attach rear hooks to ceiling & ratchet up.

That was really nice of your boyfriend to set that up for you, but I think you can do better. You should consider an upgrade.

Where are you connecting the hooks on each corner? Is there a safe slot to fasten them too without scratching the surface?

I do this same thing to remove my hardtop, but everyone please be careful when you release the ratchet straps because they let go and don’t ratchet back down, just FYI

Are the rachet straps 2-way? Meaning can you ratchet it down as well? If not, how do you manage to slowly lower it? I like this concept but am thinking about a hand winch attached to the wall with cables that will raise the hard top.

WHERE DO YOU HOOK UP RATCHET STRAPS AT THE REAR OF HARD TOP

Why complicate yourself so much? You only need another person on the other side to lift it and less than 5 seconds you wiil have removed it.

Thank you for your video. I've ordered my Jeep wrangler unlimited and it's going to have a hard top. I'm so excited i could burst. It's gonna be 6 weeks till it comes in. In the meantime for the last several months i've been watching every thing i can on Hard Top Removal. (for inexpensive) and your video is awesome. I know it's 2016 but my only question is "where" are you hooking the front strap hook? Is there an indention or hole to hook it into for a safer hold? Thank you so much. Can't wait to be Topless too!!! :)

We built the exact same set up for a friend.... Thought though after we left Colorado, How hard is it to get back down? I know it doesn't ratchet backwards.

Great job for getting the hardtop off by yourself. Use a small step ladder for safer ratcheting. I think they sell small rubber mats with parking blocks that can be glued to the floor to help people park in their garage without crashing into the wall. Those same mats could help you place your Jeep in the exact spot you need in order to put the hardtop back on. Find a better ratcheting system or hoist that makes softer lowering/landing of the hardtop.

You mentioned an electric hoist costing $800? You can buy an ATV winch with a snatch block for a little over $100. Hook those straps to the winch hook, level out the topper with the ratchet straps then all you do is press the button up or down. The snatch block increases the pulling power of the winch but since the ATV winches have around 1500 LBS. & up of pulling power you probably won't need it.

There's A LOT of cons to this that are left out of the video. All of these Jeep top ratchet strap vids never show the process of backing it up into the exact spot and then lowering the roof. When ratchet straps a released they go completely loose. The pressure points at those hooks will eventually damage the underside of the roof or the weather seals.

How did you hook the hard top to the end of the strap?

confirmation. A jeep might be a pile of crap.. or a diamond in the mud.. dunno... ( mind you, as a Pom I might note that the venerated Landrover was originally a COPY of a Jeep ).. but now I know that cute chicks like em.. time to buy one. Further note: since I look down on a Wrangler, this chick is very cutely short.. cool..
