    Hi there, I'm 48 and have been a Sim pilot for ages and have been studying through anything aircraft in books and youtube for years. I love it and have only just learned it's in reach. I've got a bit of money available now and found out I don't have to go to the local commercial airport (Parafield) to get licensed for $1000 everytime I look at an aircraft. The club is called Adelaide Soaring Club in Gawler. But, when I heard you say expect a lesson for each year of age, do you mean the kids of 18 will be around 18 flights because they're a bit better at retention before they're solo? And that I've got to look forward to 40 plus lessons?.... I hope the Sim and study stuff helps because I know a decent bit about flight but if I know my luck I'll be unlearning hours of sim habits... :) Anyway thanks for the American perspective, I'm an Aussie.

      Yes, glider training takes longer for older folks. Teenagers learn very fast. Training yourself on a sim may or may not help. There might be bad habits that will have to be unlearned.

    My first glider flight was from the Boulder, Colorado, field 55 years ago. The pilot was Lew Ericks; and everybody called him Erick. He was also a single engine pilot (Cessna 172). He was a super person and a superb pilot. Those thermals along the front range were lots of fun. I loved flying out of Boulder.

    No issue with nil and headwind parts., And academically the tailwind is mathematically correct. If the thermals are dead and unlikely to recover, no problem, just use the wind to drift you home. But if it's crossing dead ground but looks better ahead, again perhaps later in the day, where time may be of the.essence, perhaps fly at best LD for still air, or maybe slightly faster, which may gain you a few minutes, depending on the width of the dead band... You could regard it as eating into the conservative 1/2 best LD calculation. Your thoughts?

      Hi, we focused this presentation on optimizing for best glide (with no sink/lift), but as you mention, prioritizing for time or better conditions ahead may certainly change the speed to fly, especially if you have spare altitude.

      Fair enough.. I spend much time telling early as pilots that good time management may be critical to task completion( ie don't climb in every thermal and unless it's the last.thermal.of the day ( or a struggle to stay airborne) move on when the average climb rate begins to drop off...I looked at one.trace last summer and.it was turning.every mile ( and always to.left)😎

      Soaring pilots have to use judgement and probabilies on what parts of the airmass may have the best lift. Using the judgement you mention makes a difference in task speed and/or arrival altitude. We have a ground school that covers more aspects of Speed-to-Fly.     What is the “Boulder Technique” for slack line?

      The technique is to stay to the side and watch the slack loop start to be taken up as the tow plane climbs and the glider decelerates. The glider turns toward the tug and dips the nose to match tow speed as slack disappears. It is best taught via demonstration while on tow. It is difficult to get a good video of the flying finess required but I will keep trying.

    Great content! Thanks for sharing. Trim tabs are not exclusive to airplanes. For example, the LET L13 Blanik is the most produced glider in history and it features trim tabs!

    Great video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. How does the distance between thermals effect the MC settings?

      Fly your chosen MC speed between thermals unless they are too far apart to make at a high speed. L/D Max would be the slowest to fly. If you don’t think you can make it at best glide, go towards a safe landing field.

    Ahh, Thank You. I actually finally understand QNE, QNH, and QFE. For all of my training, I have just been accustomed to setting the dial in the ol Cessna 172 "just because." I really can explain it now. Just beginning in Gliders, and wow, so much to learn.

    Glad to have found this video on TH-cam. FYI... I learned to fly gliders in Boulder and Armand prepared me for my check-ride. He's a dedicated glider pilot, I'm still enjoying soaring flights, and often think about his words of wisdom in various phases of my flights.

    I am really enjoying the videos from Soaring Society of Boulder! I was watching this video and when I came to the 38:00 minute point of the video there is mention of not seeing trim settings on gliders. I was watching Stefan Langer showing his new to him LS3 glider and he showed a trim handle on the left side of the cockpit. Not sure if the glider actually uses tabs on the elevator.       Gliders typically do not have trim tabs on the elevator (I am not aware of any) as is common on airplanes. Instead they have friction devices that just hold the forward or back motion of the control stick in place. Typically the fricton control device is green, as shown in the referenced video. Various manufactures use different configurations on different models that lock into place different ways. Usually the pilot can push or pull with extra force to move the stick, but it is best to set the fricton lock to where you can fly with a very light touch.

      I skip the PRICE checklist, but rather do the following: Turn the bottle on, note the pressure, turn on the EDS and feel if it is plusing O2.

      Every pilot should have a current copy of the FAR-AIM. It is available on-line, but a bound copy is handy and looks good on your bookshelf.

      Great work there Jan! You demonstrated excellent technical knowledge and common sense answers. There’s almost always a crosswind at my field, and some downwind rudder along with a low upwind wing, counter the weather vain effect on TO, and is necessary at times. The glider takes time to react and it’s important to be in sync. My check ride day was a bit windy but it worked out well. A good reflection for your CFIG, Congratulations; Have fun and fly smart!

      You need a Student License to "Solo" (CFI supervised) any aircraft. You need a Private License to fly without CFI suppervision. The Student License is a baby step toward your Private License. Get your Private License - Glider.

    Föhn is a word of German, Swiss and Austria origin. In the Alps its known as Alpenföhn. (Germans most likely will think you are talking about a hairdryer =))

I've been live streaming glider flying in Microsoft Flight Simulator on Twitch and getting several people popping in that are curious but have no knowledge of glider flying. So, I've been working on a knowledge bank to refer them to. This is going in it. Also a good re-fresher course for me.

      Condor is a much better simulation for Soaring. With Condor you can also join online sailplane races with soaring pilots around the world.

    This is wonderful information; very well presented and explained. We at Mile High Gliding need to change some of our practices. Cutting a worn rope and re-tying the bowline knot has been a standard practice in the year-and-a-half I've been flying there. :/

    Great video, thanks. I trained to become a gliding instructor in the UK, and symptoms of the (approaching) stall basically is what you said in the video. There is just one thing that was added there, that if the glider is properly stalled, you cannot raise the nose (increase pitch) by moving the stick backwards. Main point being: if you ever find your self in a situation where pulling on the stick does not raise the nose, then you are stalled. Push the stick forward to recover from the stall. Could be a life-saver.
