Propagating Albo Monsteras | Risking it with Moss
I find moss is the worse substrate to grow roots as so hard to remove. I like using water pops for Hoya’s and Pon is good too.
I often reuse soil, I just add to it. It's never been a problem. Keep up the good work 😊
Rude comments about reusing soil? What the? That is so stupid, honestly. If you wouldn’t they would accuse you of being wasteful.
Ever try Polysporin on your plant wounds ? It theoretically should work well. :)
My youngest is homeschooling. School is overwhelming this day and time...at least it is here
I think some people just like to be rude and mean. I have absolutely reused soil. I just add some slow release fertilizer 😊
bugs
You need to change the battery in your fire alarm.
We sure do. It’s connected to the mains still but the back up battery is dying. We’ve got fire alarm overload though so another one in the same room 😁
generally with pon you can either mix it in with the soil, or put a layer at the bottom of the pot so you still get most of the benefits. also next time, if you want to remove the tougher to reach bits of soil from the roots, try soaking it off in water - that's what i've seen most people do. then repeat with new water until it's all gone, it's a lot gentler than trying to do it all by hand.
I honestly don’t know what I didn’t try that. I normally do that every time. 🥴 good to know about the pon, thank you 🙏🏼
I take my new plants outside and hose them down and wash the soil off the roots. It's the only way to make sure it doesn't have mealy bugs. And yes I use soil in self watering pots😊
That’s a good idea. I’ll get a hose 👍🏼
The Scindapsus in water is the Exotica. I have the Scindapsus 'Platinum', all silver but same leaf shape.Your "Happy Leaf" is a E. Manjula and it is a slow grower.
Oh thank you so much that makes so much sense now ☺️
beautiful monsteras! 🤩 the epipremnum (marble queen?) looks like it is giving some green leaves. In my experience the variegation will get more pronounced the more light it gets, without burning it of course!
I don’t think my old one has lived in a high light area for a long long while and I’ve noticed that with it. This new one was in a south window though so maybe too much light, (without burning) if that’s even possible?
Great as always ❤🎉
I love plant update - AND your wallpapaper!
@@KarMa-ws3ll wallpaper? I can’t think where we have wallpaper 😅
@@AbiBloomUK i mean the background in this video.
OH MY; its a real wall not wall paper😁sorry. Anyway, love the texture
@@KarMa-ws3llthank you so much ❤❤
I do like it when I get a fully white leaf because i think they look good, buy you are right, they definitely don't last long 😢
My friend has a huge Thai monstera that is giving fully white leaves 💔 pretty but only lasts a couple of months. Pop
A real moss pole would work so much better. It's such a fast grower as is, with 5 plants in that pot, it could be looking so much better.
You’re very right. The pole one of my Albos has stuck to is a better coco coil pole, which resembles a moss pole more than these cheap ones and the roots love it and the plant is thankful for it. I need to look into them but the plants are so big now I think they’ll be hard to keep moist but also expensive?
@@AbiBloomUK Making your own is so affordable. A 5 foot roll in height, I forget the width of the roll, cost about $21 US dollars. It makes several poles too. Hardware cloth coated. Spagnum moss is cheaper if found locally versus than ordering on Amazon. Sydney plant guy aka Jan, has a tutorial pinned to his TH-cam channel.
So tried to like your video but it won't 😢, I did enjoy your video
Oh really! Thanks for trying, it means a lot! ❤️❤️
OMG £3.00 for the Maranta. I was guessing 14.99. What a great bargain. Lucky you
I know I was shocked. Why did I only buy one? 🫠
Thank you for another great video. I love buying new plants, the problem is where to put them 😮
That is a big problem, one I have too! Doesn’t stop us though does it 😅😂
Hi! Thats never nice, when plants get sick - but we all have been there at some point! Every new plant opens up that possibility. With any desease, you should immedeately isolate the plants so it does not spread. Otherwise, all plants will get infested fast. The last plant honestly looks like thrips to mee. They like the viny ones. Especially the dots are a dead giveaeay i think. though I never have seen a funghi infection. I had a thrips infestation and some variaties are so small that you cannot see them with the eyes, you can only diagnose by yellow leaves, tiny dark spots and "scars" or "scratches". The thrips also go to monsteras ,epiprenums, etc. by the way. I was not able to get rid of it without treatment; it was the first time a ever used one, ever, but it helped and today they are healthy. Had to spray the leaves of ALL of my plants several times though. With the mealy bugs, in my experience, if it went THAT far, all you can do is protect your other plants. If you see only one, put it in another room, cover it with plastic, never touch other plants right after it without washing hands. You could transfer eggs or tiny insects. To me, if I had a plant like that, i would sadly throw it away, before they infest everything else. On the other hand, you can ask yourself: What happend to your plants, what can you chance? For me, i will never get a plant and not isolate it first, because thats how i got thrips in the first place and it was quite a struggle to get rid of them. I dont use organic soil anymore. That reduces risk for root rot, funghi, and a lot of insects who love organic substrates. i prefere perlite (100l for 20 Euros, goes a long way) OR cocos fibre and perlite mix. It also avoids soggy soil and even if the soil is wet, it provides a lot of 02 for the roots. Wish you luck with your plant babies!
I’m unfortunately very experienced with thrips and the EP doesn’t have thrips, luckily. Someone suggested checking the roots which is a good point. The mealy bug plant is full isolated in its own room. I hadn’t realised they fly when adults though! That’s crazy. With the new plants I isolate for weeks, if not months before moving them into the same space as I’ve learnt from part experience it’s essential it’s done. I think it might be time the EP goes though.
@@AbiBloomUK good luck!!!
The Idea with the shelf is great - instant green wall, especially with the viny plant propagations!
Yes I love that! I had the IKEA ladder plant stand which I put on the back of a door and had trailing plants for a while. It looked so lovely but a pain if you’re sat behind the door when it’s open 😂
Nice video! I do several things with my tetra: You can take a longer vine and pin it to the ground (or put damp moss with plastic over a node) and after it formed roots, i cut it = new, quite big plant. For faster growing, I cut 1 leaf with one node and root them in water or lecca and later plant them at the bottom of the old plant. That makes everything bushy and the new little ones have something to climb over. Love this!
That’s a really good idea. This plant is already 5/6 vines in one pot but I like the idea of this for the smaller plant. Thanks! 🙏🏼
Check out the roots on your epipremnum pinnatum. Mine was yellowing and found it was very root bound, mine had a huge root system for how big the plant was. Not sure about the spots under the leaves though. And i've also found the same as you with my variegated peace lily, in that the old leaves die off when the new growth comes through. Good luck ❤
I had even thought to check the EP’s roots. Thank you Charlie 🤗
Adult male mealy bugs can fly
@@sharondriver2445 CAN THEY!!! Bloody hell. 🥹
Mealy Bugs in USA I use Pure Crop spray once for 3 days kills them
Mealybugs are the worse. I usually manually use a cotton bud to remove what i can see. Then I use neem oil, lemon dish soup and mix together with water in a spray bottle. And drenched the plant. And leave it on for 5 - 10 mins. Then wipe it down. But i nearly have that bad of infestation when is that bad i would soak the plant in a deep container. I do a couple of times. Then rinse with clear water. The last year and half i have been using preventative once a month and clean the leaves everytime i watet my plants. And that helps alot.
I had a bad mealy bug infestation on my Rhipsalis Baccifera and doused it in provanto smart bug killer spray and after about 3/4 treatments it’s all clear ! The only thing that worked for me . The infestation was about the same as yours
The Hoya with mealies, take cuttings and throw the rest away. Nothing else works in my experience
I fear this may be the case 💔
What a nightmare! Hope you'll get it sorted! 😮
For the hoya with the mealy bugs, get a spray bottle filled with 70% rubbing alcohol and just go to to town on the whole plant just dont get it in the soil it may take a couple sprays just wait a couple days in between. Dont go above 70% or you will need to dilute it
I will absolutely be trying this tonight. Thank you!
I’m doing the same and it works perfectly… after some sprays you can put it under water and just flush the dead ones away..
Oh I hate mealy bugs. I give mine systemic pesticide and sprayed them with pesticide. You may also have to repot it to make sure there are none in the soil. I would take it out and wash the whole plant, roots and all. And they are probably on other plants too. And they clear stuff is probably honeydew from the mealy bugs
Honeydew from mealybugs! Who would have known! Wow thank you. I think I’ll take it out and pop it in water and treat. So all soil is in the bin. Maybe that’s why they come back so often?
Oh darn, I am sorry about the mealy bugs! If a plant like the first Hoya is that severely infested there is really not much you can do. Maybe take cuttings, treat those thoroughly and reroot but keep away from rest of your collection. But if that plant has been near any other plants it’s very likely that it’s spread already. Good luck!
Thank you. I am wondering if it’s too far gone. Think it’ll do what others have suggested too along with this suggestion being my back up. Take it out of soil, treat with rubbing alcohol (drown it) and then if that doesn’t work, prop it 🥲
😢
What a pretty neon pothos! They are so underrated! I’m currently working/propping my neon philo which I want to combine with my neon pothos props. I think that’ll be a real pretty combo.
Oh that would be! I’ve got a very small neon philodendron because I love my neon Pothos so much. I hope it’s a pretty quick grower as it’s only tiny
Honey, that will root much faster in moist sphagnum moss or soil (place in a large clear bag for a few weeks). I had a HUGE one (probably 5 times the size of yours) and was forced to chop some of it off. I tried a whole bunch of tactics. Rooting in water was the slowest and often had very low success rates. Good luck with yours.
I’ve been propergating for 6+ years and water has always been more successful and faster for me 🤗
@@AbiBloomUK Well, I am glad it works for you. I've been propagating for more than 50 years now, and lots of things do fine in water. I just had a harder time with the tetrasperma and also my Monstera Esqueleto. Takes forever to root in water for me.
That philodendron paraiso verde is part of my collection 💚 not that small anymore and I for sure didn’t pay £299 🎉
Oh so lucky! They have really good prices, some of the best but I’ve not bought from them in years due to the pests they come with. It’s not worth it in my opinion 🫠
@@AbiBloomUK yeah I totally get that. Most gardens centre around me are the same. Can I ask where you now buy your rare plants from?
@@Bythegraceofme yeah same for me. I feel like it’s got worse since brexit which should really have seen it got better with all the checks 🤓 I don’t really buy any rare plants anymore but if I was I would on eBay or Instagram from private collectors or Grow Tropicals are very good 👍🏼
Love your plants and hope little one recovers fast❤
Thank you! He’s made a speedy recovery and is already sleeping better now the sleep Apena has been resolved 🤗
@@AbiBloomUK 😇🤗😘glad to hear that
The first Hoya that you showed have a mealy bug hiding. Can you please check?
Good spot! Itdoes, I noticed it a few weeks back but haven’t got around to sorting it out. It’s had on and off mealy bugs for years. So strange it goes in winter but comes back again.
Love your videos. I am so envious of your albos. They are fabulous!
Thank you Margaret, that means a lot. My albos are pretty lovely! I’m not a patient person and like to propagate a lot but glad I left these to grow 🤓
I love it that you want normal plants. Me too.
I do. I’m a simple plant kinda gal 🤗
Huge differences! I remember your first Before & After video a few years ago 😊
Love your plants.
you still look the same (Gorgeous) like in the Video you made 3 years ago, which i just watched
Aw thank you so much! I wished I did in real life though. Definitely have grey hairs and less of a law line since becoming a mum 😂
i bought some tomato plants , who already had some green Tomatoes on it. as soon as i planted them outside , i was raining EVERY days for weeks and no sunshine at all ! (Northern Ireland) of course they all died. I try again next year but will buy me one of those mini plastic greenhouses.
Aw sorry to hear that. My tomatoes outside are big and weirdly shaped but still green. The greenhouse ones are much smaller and also still green. It’s been a weird summer so I don’t blame them but I hope they make it
I found out that Neem cake power was good for Plants and keep bugs away, i ordered some organic Neem cake and placed it on all my Plants. Within a week all the soil got Moldy and several of my Plants got sick (young leaves were cover with black bugs) i now have ordered Provanto Smart Bug Killer and hope it will do the job. I have Billions of Gnuts as well !
Oh wow, I’ve never heard of it. I’ll look into that, thanks!!
I was looking for a Bug Killer for my Plants and now i am in LOVE ;-) what was the product again
🤓😇🥰
You just reminded me that I need to I need to buy some tomato fertiliser. Nice video :)
Thanks so much! Hope your tomatoes and growing in nicely
Hiya! Seeing the video's a year old, do you mind sharing an updated opinion? I'm looking to sell these all over the UK.
Hey! So I’ve used two together to extend the height. I wouldn’t recommend using them for tall plants as the weight of the plant is too much for the pole. I’ve also not seen any improvement for my plants in terms of leaf size ect. Which I am seeing on a coco coir pole for the same plant type and same size. I think the poles are too small in diameter 😊
Great information. But you need to be more careful about getting the treatment on your skin . Best to wear rubber gloves
The lemon lime is such a cool plant I have one that is just now maturing. The lighter greenish color is normal as it matures you will notice the new leaves will come in a bronzey color and go to a darker green!
Now that is really cool! I can't wait to see it grow. It'll look really cool next to the heart leaf philo too
