#israelpalestineconflict: The Concrete Between Us [a documentary by Dogma Films, 2019]
#israelpalestineconflict
As the conflict in Gaza explodes at the time of writing (Nov 2023), this short piece filmed around the West Bank in 2019 aims to explore the most recent history of the area, and some of the systemic issues underlying to the 70+ years long conflict between Israel and Palestine.
Featuring Israeli and Palestinian voices, the film looks at the dynamics and interactions between people and power on a land marked by concrete walls, checkpoints, and other barriers
restricting movement and impacting livelihoods.

Watching this video, I realized that what really counts in life are only three things: shelter, food and significant others. Other things are only perks that we can do without.

I emigrated from Cardiff to Australia, I don't know if you have the same scheme in Wales as we do over here. The Salvation Army has a scheme, which we use at Christmas time for our family's Xmas presents. The Salvos offer a thing where we can make a donation and receive a receipt for, say $20, 30, 40, or whatever you can afford. The receipt will have the name of your relative on it, inside a Christmas card. That is their chrissie present. We buy toys for the kidillies, of course, but the adults all get a salvo receipt with a different sentence on it, saying this will provide a meal for a homeless person or a bed for the night etc. One benefit of this idea is we don't have to elbow our way around department stores, buying stuff that the recipient may not like, plus they can claim it on their next tax return. Why give money to big companies that don't pay any tax. I watched several TH-cam Videos showing how Finland solved the homeless problem, there's even a Wikipedia page on it. Type In, How Finland Solved The Homeless Problem. I hope you would like to try this Xmas idea from the Salvos, and see if any other homeless charities offer the same deal, one of our rellies is gay so we get a receipt from one of the LBGQT homeless-supported charities that are cool about being gay. Unfortunately, the Tories love to persecute the poor and powerless, because they know they can't fight back. Unfortunately, the predominantly right-wing media cheer them on because they are owned by billionaires. When I lived in Cardiff, in the sixties, homeless men or women, at the start of winter would smash a shop window in Queen Street and wait for the police to arrive and plead guilty and get a spell in jail, where they get a warm bed and three meals a day. This was mainly older people because they realised they have little chance of getting a job, so a criminal record wasn't a problem. I don't think that this wonderful man and woman will ever be on the Queen's New Years' Honour list. Do we really live in a civilised society?

Was born in Cardiff in 1940. I left when I was 22. I can’t remember ever seeing homeless people even in the dock area. However my dad taught in Herbert Thomson Secondary modern school in Ely. He told me that some parents were suite happy for their children to go to prison, as they at least would have three meals a day. I have never forgotten that.

Its 1 month and 1 week for universal credit. Basicaly they assess your claim every month. Once they have assessed your claim they then send out a payment which you get 7 days later. The first assessment is exactly 1 month after you put your claim in. Say you start your claim on the first of a month(Example 1st of December). They do an assessment on the first of the next month (aka 1st of January) and then you get your payment 7 days later on the 8th. I have just had to sign onto Universal Credit and that is what they told me

The Huggard run a number of hostels or they used to. Last time I was homeless I couldn't go back because I owed money and it wasn't even my fault. Whilst I was their I got a job and for 2 months they kept telling me all I had to pay was £10 a week as the benefits were paying the rest to help me sort myself out. I thought great. But I did say are you sure and to check and for 2 months they insisted on £10 a week. Then after 2 months they said oh sorry we made a mistake, the benefits hadn't been paid the extra and you owe about £600. I was making £200 a week on my job and they out of that expecting me to pay the rent and the debt.

Destroy the tents, well done to the axxxholes who sanction this.these people are on the deck and have nothing, and the help they get tear down the little bit of protection they have, disgusting.you will find the only ones who give unconditionally to the lesser well off are the ones who have little themselves.this guy and his wife are a credit to society

Respect to you, but the problem is, not everyone, but the majority of them have given up. They cannot be bothered to help themselves. They take handouts not to better themselves, but to feed their hunger and addiction. If somebody was on the street and didn't like it, there are many ways to get around it, but they need to help themselves. You can't expect to sit on the street and expect a phone call saying "here you go mr/miss ______. we have new accommodation awaiting your arrival". The people who don't like that way of life do something about it. The rest give up and turn to the short term fixes to try and fix a long term problem.

I think most cases of homelessness is a symptom of a much bigger problem. Very few people just lose their house unexpectedly. Genuine people who lost their jobs and come into financial problems pick themselves up very quickly. The problem appears to be drugs and alcohol with most of them. They lived chaotic lives long before they became homeless and it;s their problems which stops the council from housing them. If you give them a house it will be wrecked in seconds and they;ll be straight back on the streets.

The problem with rough sleepers is that they don't want to go through the system. Floor space in huggard is awful but you've got to do it if you want to get a hostel or any kind of housing
