Speed Management
When you're behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle, managing your speed is one of the most critical aspects of staying safe on the road.
It’s not just about following the posted speed limit-it’s about adjusting our speed to match conditions, maintaining safe distances, and anticipating potential hazards.
Here are some tips to help you regulate your speed and maintain control in different driving conditions.
Regulating Speed and Following Distance
Maintaining a safe following distance is the first rule of defensive driving. On the road, seconds matter-sometimes they’re the only thing standing between you and a dangerous situation.
To determine a safe following distance, use the "four-second rule." Find a fixed object on the side of the road, like a sign or a pole, and count how long it takes for your vehicle to pass it after the vehicle in front of you. If it’s less than four seconds, you’re following too closely.
Heavier vehicles need more time to stop, especially when loaded. At higher speeds or in poor conditions, increase that following distance to six seconds or more.
Think of the space in front of you as your safety cushion; the bigger it is, the more time you have to react.
Adjusting Speed in Inclement Weather:
Weather is one of the most unpredictable factors on the road. Rain, snow, fog, or ice can transform the road beneath your tires into a slippery obstacle course.
This is where proactive speed management is critical. Reduce your speed by at least one-third on wet roads and by half on snow-covered roads. If you encounter icy patches, proceed with extreme caution, as traction can be nearly nonexistent.
Visibility also plays a significant role. In fog or heavy rain, slow down to match what you can see.
Navigating Work Zones Safely
Work zones demand extra vigilance. These areas often feature narrower lanes, sudden stops, and workers near traffic. When you approach a work zone, reduce your speed early to allow plenty of time to adjust to any unexpected changes.
Keep an eye out for signs, cones, and flaggers, and be prepared for lane shifts or reduced space. Speeding in a work zone is not only dangerous-it can also result in steep fines.
Treat work zones as no-excuses zones. By slowing down and staying alert, you help protect both yourself and the workers relying on your attentiveness.
Defensive Driving and Speed Management Defensive driving is all about expecting the unexpected. Speed management is at the heart of this philosophy. Always keep an eye on traffic patterns and anticipate how other drivers might behave.
If you notice brake lights ahead, start slowing down early. If someone is tailgating you, increase your following distance from the vehicle in front of you to give yourself more time to react.
Proactive speed adjustments also help you avoid hard braking or abrupt maneuvers, which can lead to jackknifing or loss of control.
Obeying Speed Limits
While it may seem obvious, obeying posted speed limits is a foundation of safe driving. However, these limits are designed for ideal conditions. It’s your responsibility to determine when conditions require you to go slower. A 65 mile per hour speed limit doesn’t mean much if visibility is poor, traffic is heavy, or the road is slick.
Remember that speed limits in certain areas, like curves or steep grades, are often lower for a reason. They’re calculated with safety in mind, and ignoring them can lead to rollovers or brake failures.
Practical Tips for Proactive Speed Management
Plan Ahead: Check weather and traffic reports before hitting the road. Knowing what to expect helps you adjust your speed and driving strategy.
Use Cruise Control Wisely: While it can be helpful on open, dry highways, avoid using it in rain, snow, or ice where sudden adjustments might be needed.
Stay Patient: Rushing to save a few minutes isn’t worth the risk. Remember, safety always trumps speed.
Scan Your Surroundings: Regularly check your mirrors and monitor blind spots to maintain awareness of potential hazards.
Safe driving isn’t just about you-it’s about everyone on the road. By proactively managing your speed, you create a safer environment for yourself and others.
Drive defensively, adjust for conditions, and always stay alert. By doing so, you’ll help ensure that every trip ends safely, no matter the challenges along the way.

Interesting video, the only part I would contest is the requirement for flares. I might be interpreting it incorrectly. www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-III/subchapter-B/part-393/subpart-H/section-393.95#p-393.95(g) (f) Warning devices for stopped vehicles. Except as provided in paragraph (g) of this section, one of the following options must be used: (1) Three bidirectional emergency reflective triangles that conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 125, § 571.125 of this title; or (2) At least 6 fusees or 3 liquid-burning flares. The vehicle must have as many additional fusees or liquid-burning flares as are necessary to satisfy the requirements of § 392.22. (3) Other warning devices may be used in addition to, but not in lieu of, the required warning devices, provided those warning devices do not decrease the effectiveness of the required warning devices.

Hi Rick, sorry for the delay in responding. Currently. there is no regulatory guidance pertaining to mismatched tire sizes on opposite ends of an axle. Particularly on a steer axle. But, the CVSA is examining the issue and we hope to hear something in the next few months.

Do you have too take your 30 mins break if you haven't drove 8 hours ?

    • @MySafetyManager
      @MySafetyManager 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for the question! No, you only have to take your 30 minute break after hitting the 8 hours driving mark for the day. This used to be within 8 hours of coming on-duty. So, there is now more flexibility.

What to do if my eld provider dont have tgat exemption?

    • @MySafetyManager
      @MySafetyManager ปีที่แล้ว

@Kubanaid5960, If your current ELD provider cannot accommodate the TGAT exemption, consider exploring other ELD providers that offer this feature. I would give them a call first and see if you need a software update or patch to be able to use this exemption. If not, you may have to split. Konexial’s My20ELD product is very popular with many of our clients who haul ag products. Larger providers like Motive and Samsara will also have TGAT functionality built in as well. Hope this helps and good luck!

Sometimes these add on feature options can be turned on or off for drivers to be able to select. For instance PC Moves may not be an option for a driver to pick due to company policy. However, communication of that to owner of DOT # or Units Terminal Management will get the sure answer on whether or not that can be added to listing for the Unit. I have not heard of a company offering ELD hardware not offering that and still being considered a compliant device.

So in the past, I was on my 14 hour clock and I went off duty for 2 consecutive hours or 3 consecutive hours I actually got the time back that I lost due to inactivity because of a vehicle defect. But now as of May 2023 I noticed that my clock is not being reset even though I've been off duty for over 3 hours and 40 minutes. I still have 6 hours and 46 minutes left on my drive line but it did not give me back my on duty time which I had when I got to this facility in Virginia Which at the time was 8 hours plus

Thanks for the comment @BillCheshire_Jr! I bet that your ELD company has recently completed a software update that may be affecting this. I would try updating your app again or possibly re-downloading it (if it's a Bring your own device deal). That has worked for many of our clients in the past. Hope this helps!
