This is like watchin a n/b swichin at Cline before headin out to Herington. They had them hi-cubes rockin side to side, you didnt believe they could make it, but most times they did. How it turned out was a damn shame.
I guess i miss all of that, like the old timers when i was young, missed the steam power. Go figure. Its only been 40-50 yrs.
Man, i love those open autoracks. Back then you had wide open, partilly enclosed, and brand new enclosed auto racks. Almost endless variety. Those cars were pooled. These Auto rack trains today, bore the hell outa me.
How far into the 70's? I know a lotta people hated the "bankrupt blue and bled white", but it sure was a helluva show. Deepdown, i think all of us wanted "The Rock" to somehow make it. Espee power was common on the Southern Div. and the Golden State Route.
I model up to 1974, just prior to the bankruptcy blue era. Thanks for watching the video. Mike
@rimodeler7963 I know how ya feel. I model up to 1980. That's when the world changed. No more Rock. No more Frisco. MILW was just a shell of itself. And a year later the MoP announced that the end was near. We never envisioned a world without ATSF. We might as well've shot ourselves right then. Lol.
I guess as far as accuracy goes, it would be impossible to depict a s/b Ft.Wotrh train runnin outta Wichita S. Jct. with hi-cubes rockin so far that wheels left the rail to slam back down, but it was that bad. I was there. I saw it. These smooth riding stak trains today, make it seem impossible, but it really was routine.
AWESOME
That's pretty cool!!! It has the right sound, but what actuates the squeal?? I must have missed how it works?? As always, a Beautiful layout!!!!! Thanks for sharing this new device!!!
Hi Dave - there is a “spotting” device in the middle of the track (between two ties) that senses the motion of equipment passing over it which triggers random flange squeal sounds. Thanks for your comments and thanks for watching the video. Mike
That would work great on my interchange track between the two routes on my layout.
I have one to install on my layout, cool.
Great video. Love the squealing sound!! I’ve got a couple of places I’d like to use this on my layout. Do you do a wooden bridge floor rumble? I’d love to add that sound to several large wooden floor bridges also. 🚂
I highly recommend installing a flange squealer on your layout. I do not have a wooden bridge floor rumble, although, that would be an interesting sound to add. Good luck with your modeling. Mike
Hi Mike, that is a nice demo. I have been thinking about this for a while. Thanks for the video. All the best. Syl
Thank you, Syl!
What a wonderful railroad you have created!
I have one…love it!
Nice touch! Now you need to add flange greasers near those curves.
😂 good one!
Thank you for sharing. Very nice, 👍
Does add more realism to your layout as you said, interesting how they do that.
Man, thst is an awrsome layout. I am impressed and have subbed. I run SP.
I appreciate your comments and thank you very much for subscribing. Mike
Cool running session.
I grew up In Moline Il on the Rock Islands double track line.Rode my bike to the Moline depot hundreds of times to see the Cornbelt Rocket # 10 5 16 pm. Knew engineer Bill O Brian on the Illinois Division and he gave me a cab ride on #10 from Rock Island to Moline! He said the speed limit was 90 mph, but he had the E units up to 100 mph. My dad took us out to Green River, Il where we clocked the passenger trains at over 90 mph. This was a great place at night where you could see the Mars lights flashing back and forth many minutes before the trains came over the crossing. I went to work on the CB&RR as a locomotive fireman June 12,1969 when I was 20 at Galesburg,Il. Had a pool turn on passenger train between Galesburg and Quincy,Il. Fantastic job, best I ever had. Going thru towns at 80(79) mph was great. Calling signals and watching the Mars light flashing back an forth at night is something I will never forget. Your video brought back many great memories. Thanks!! I am now 76 years old, but still love the Rock Island.
Thank you for your great story. I can relate to the experience of watching the Mars light searching back and forth through the darkness ….. such a neat sight. Also, the Rock Island’s Nathan 5 chime old cast air horns were the sweetest sound ever. You certainly had some memorable experiences with the Rock Island and I appreciate you sharing them. Thanks for watching the video. Mike
I love it. Particularly the negative space. Theres a real sense of distance created that's missing from so many layouts. I can't wait to start my CNW layout!
@@dan2304k - thank you very much for your comments and all the best to you as you create your C&NW model railroad. Mike
Love this and always enjoy your layout! Thank you!
Thank you very much! Mike
Beautiful work. Happy to see someone modeling the Rock Island passenger trains and the Hawkeye. Would you consider running the Hawkeye with the GP9's?
I have two IC passenger geeps that I can pull the Hawkeye with. Thank you for your comments. Mike
Run trains 😊 and nice weathering on the equipment.
Thank you very much! Mike
Thanks another Mike, the memories
Stunning
Magnificent Trains on a Beautiful Layout ! Very Nice ! Thanks for Sharing !😊
Thank you so much! Mike
Thanks for sharing. What material and fasteners did you use for your fascia? Love the smooth look.
For the fascia, I used 1/8” hardboard and countersunk holes for standard wood screws. I then used joint compound to fill the countersunk holes and any joints and sanded smooth prior to painting. Thanks for watching the video. Mike
I like the flange squealers you added to various curves along the route. Nice touch of realism, Mike.
Thanks very much. I have been pleased with the Iowa Scaled Engineering flange squealers ...... they've got a good product there! Mike
Was a teenager back in the late 60s. With my parents, attended a wedding in Minnesota. Was allowed to take the Plainsman from St Paul to KC. Told the folks I’d connect with KCS #15 home to Grandview, MO, and Dad could pick me up there. Upon arrival at KCUS, there were Mom & Dad - they beat the train - no ride on the KCS that night 😢.
I enjoyed your story. I, too, would have been bummed if I wasn't able to ride the next leg of the trip on the KCS. Similar to your story, for a birthday present, my parents put me on the Plainsman at Iowa Falls for a 70 mile, and about a one hour trip, to Des Moines and ...... you guessed it ..... they beat the train to Des Moines. I had fun anyway. Thanks for watching the video. Mike
@@rimodeler7963 We used to have dinner in downtown KC - the folks would drop me off at US & I’d catch KCS #15 to Grandview (25 mile ride). Still have ticket receipts - over time- 75 to 76 to 77 cents!!
Gorgeous layout!
Thank you! Mike
Outstanding layout and equipment! Thank you for sharing. FYI, it was not uncommon to see either Central of Georgia E8 911 or 812 leading the "Hawkeye" since it was joint pool power for the IC/CG/ACL City of Miami. There is a wonderful photograph of a CG E8 in the old Blue/Gray and Orange pinstripe scheme in one of the Pike-Sized Passenger Train installments pulling the Hawkeye.
I appreciate your comments. I have seen photos of a Central of Georgia E8 leading the Hawkeye. Thanks for watching the video. Mike
Thank you for sharing. Beautiful still photos, especially the black and white one, well done.👍
Thank you, Gary. A friend of mine, Blair Kooistra, took the black and white photo and has a great eye for photos. Mike
Beautiful video. Tell me are the stainless steel passenger cars at 14:23 scale lenght? They remind me of the old Triang models?
As far as I know, the cars are scale length. The stainless steel passenger cars are Walthers and Rapido models. Thanks for watching the video. Mike
This is awesome! I’m such a passenger train junkie or weirdo depending on who ya ask… Let’s see some more Rock Island varnish!!!
I like your enthusiasm and thank you for watching the video. Mike
Beautiful trains, Mike. I really enjoy passenger service just before Amtrak. Too bad I'm younger than Amtrak....lol.... thanks for sharing this.
Thank you, John, for watching and commenting. While passenger service had generally degraded somewhat just prior to Amtrak, it was still enjoyable to watch and photograph. Mike
This was GREAT, thanks for showing them to us.
Very impressive. I really like the MILW passenger train. Great video.
Watching that Is Interesting 👍
Brautiful trains, fantastic layout!
I just watched the Elgin witch is in the Chicago area nice orange and orange& green color this is an interesting history of the Chicago area or as you would say the midwest
It would be awesome to visit this layout with my CGW passenger train 13/14 Omaha to st Paul train
Really neat passenger trains…never got to ride one…the Hiawatha Dome Observation car is really cool…did you scratch build that?
The Hiawatha Super Dome and Sky Top Observation cars are Walthers models. Thanks for your comments and for watching. Mike
Nice to see varnish on the layout Mike. Great video. Thanks for sharing
Wow!! Great looking consists. The Hawkeye and Zephyr Rocket both ran through my hometown of Waterloo, Iowa. Sadly they both cancelled a couple years before my arrival in the world. The Zephyr Rocket ran on the exact subdivision i am modeling so its my #1 ! Great video!
216, where are you modeling the ZR route? I’m working on their layout from Burlington-Columbus Junction!
@KSRailfan I'm modeling Waterloo/Bryant Yard to Palo 1974 to the end
I appreciate your comments. Have fun with your modeling and thanks for watching the video. Mike
@ Wow! Very cool! My current project is to work on the Gypsum plant in Sperry.
Great video.
Another great video!! Learned something new from this video. Keep up the great work Mike!!
Thank you, Wyatt!
I enjoy following your Railroad. Your modeling and concept are superb. Do you add Rail joint bars after you notch your rail for the joint simulation? Is that black ballast trimming out the regular ballast? It is the best ballast I have seen, plus your rail color is spot on. Thanks for sharing your outstanding railroad with us. Best, Wiley T
I created jointed rail on a 12' section of my layout (attached link to that video below) and, yes, I added joint bars to simulate a bolted rail joint. I placed the black colored ballast at the outer edge of the main line ballast to simulate cinders that were used in original track construction many years prior. Thank you for your comments. Mike th-cam.com/video/KGVNnWs1z4o/w-d-xo.html
Always awesome!
Thank you Can’t believe it took me five days before I watched this video. Once again we see some surprise areas we haven’t seen before….. I know these videos are a lot to produce, so I won’t make any requests. Instead I’ll just say feel free to include the “nuts and bolts” that make this RR run in clips as well. Staging, dispatch area, even your workbench. Your staging area is impressive and organized as we would expect. I’ll bet the rest is, too. Thank you for sharing these videos with us.
I appreciate you watching and thanks for the comments and suggestions which I’ll keep in mind for future videos. Mike
