The trouble with putting out food for wild birds is that it adds to the food chain in more ways than one....
This chap occasionally sits patiently in the tree, so I can't help thinking we're 'groundbaiting the swim for him' !
The other birds are quite wide to him though, they usually disappear...

RSPB 'Feeding Sanctuary'

If you're plagued with Jackdaws, Starlings and Pigeons hoovering up your expensive wild bird feed, then this gadget could solve your problem. It's marketed as a 'ground sanctuary', but we fitted ours on a bird table to avoid attracting vermin. It's simply a wire cage with a mesh wide enough to admit all small birds but exclude the larger ones. They take a while to get used to it, but then there...

VelocityOne Yoke Detent Mod

Here's my DIY mod to get rid of the very abrupt centre detent on the pitch axis of the Turtle Beach VelocityOne flight yoke. This bit of hardware is very good in most respects, but the detent makes subtle pitch adjustments (such as when on final touchdown) very difficult. It's quite simple, just a question of unscrewing the top cover and then removing two plastic shaft stops from the side shaft...

This short clip shows how I exit my rig at the end of a flight. The Rhino FF Joystick swivels forward so that I can extract my non-gymnastic leg, and then the seat swivels round. The start of the clip shows the very good vibration feedback from the Rhino, while the MsFS c172 was ticking over on the runway.

มุมมอง 2.3Kปีที่แล้ว
The phenomenon of "cogging" occurs when a brush type DC motor turns very slowly or when giving partial revolutions. The electricity to the windings is connected via carbon brushes that touch a segmented commutator, so that as it rotates it connects to each coil in turn. There are therefore points at which the energy force "jumps" onto the next coil, rather than smoothly transfering to it. This ...

    I tried your mod and it works quite well, but I didn’t like that the springs rattles and scraped on the metal shaft. What I did was make my own bumpers with 1cm length of 15mm Pushfit tubing - it’s has the perfect internal diameter for the shaft and, with a small amount of filing, fits nice and snug inside the spring. Best of both worlds 😊

    That's a great and easy fix indeed, though I agree with @TWOKDOK1 the nylon washers are here for a reason (mostly contact wear and noise). So in my case I put them in the drill and reduced their diameter with a file :) I reduce the diameter from 27mm to ~23mm and they can now travel freely through the middle detent groove. I had to remove the black rubber and foam pads first to easily file the white tefflon part, and then I sticked it again on the tefflon and cut the part that was going outside the tefflon. It works pretty great now :)

    I was at the flight sim expo in Las Vegas last week and there were a number of Velocity One flight yokes set up and I noticed they did not have the strong detent or the stickiness that is present in the older models. I believe they must have made some improvements to the design. I have the 3D printed support rollers on mine and they do work as well. About a year ago I tried to do a mod similar to yours but rather than remove the washers I used string tie to collapse two coils of the spring effectively making it slightly shorter and weaker.

    Cheers for the video. I don’t have this yoke but the low end quality of it and having to do mods to improve it reminds me so much of the Saitek/Logitech which I had. Never again will I ever buy the cheap stuff, it’s simply not worth it for the money and you end up paying more in the long run by replacing them with something much better straight off the bat. FFB is in my near future and I can’t wait to not have to deal with rubbish springs, overly strong centre detents that don’t move with trimming the aircraft and stiction.

    • @anthonymark3771
      @anthonymark3771 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry to disagree but this yoke is great. And not everyone has unlimited funds to buy the latest and greatest. But the Velocity One has so many features compared to every other yoke and throttle set, that doing miner mods to make it work even better, puts this yoke up with the best. As you said, you don’t have it so you have no idea how good and feature rich this device is!

    • @WhiteHawk77
      @WhiteHawk77 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@anthonymark3771 First up, anything like this that needs mods to fix issues obviously isn’t great, and the level of mods that would be really needed to make this a GREAT flight sim yoke would be expensive enough you might as well get something else in the first place. Up with the best? That’s hilarious, you should go on stage with jokes like that and having extra cheap switch’s and dials etc which you can get separately doesn’t excuse its main purpose sucking even with mods. No, the problem isn’t that I haven’t tried this one, it’s that YOU haven’t tried anything better, were as I have had experience of cheap crap yokes like this and a load of other cheap plastic controls AND of better options and I’ll never go back to this kind of garbage. I’ve wasted enough money on them and I’ve also done mods to them as well to remove too strong detents, stiction and other issues, which improved them sure, but it’s like putting lipstick on a pig, it still performs like dirt compared to other options and I’ve seen that first hand a number of times now. As per usual with you people you bring up not being able to afford better options as if that changes the quality difference and as if thats part of your attack on my comment, as if I have something against anyone who’s poor, because the reality is you would have to be pretty poor to not be able to afford something better than this. You don’t need unlimited funds or even many funds to manage that, and if you are actually really into flight simulation you will find the money and anyone poor enough that can’t find it probably has more important things to worry about and isn’t into flight sims which let’s face it, isn’t that cheap of a hobby. I don’t even make much money myself, but that’s actually more reason to pay less in the long run than waste any more money on something that doesn’t perform its duties well and I’m unhappy with and so ends up getting replaced eventually which means more money spent, that’s my point. But you carry on lying to yourself it’s better than it is, I’ve seen plenty of people with your delusions before when they won’t or can’t spend the extra so they go defensive on their purchase decisions. But I’ve also seen a rare few that when they do wake up and get something better they realise how wrong they were, pretty recently actually.

    The thing about this is that on a real plane, the yoke will tend to want to center the faster you're flying. It's like a natural detent. The wind over the elevators makes them want to go neutral at high speeds. During landing it's much less of an issue. If you find the tension to high to maintain a certain position of the yoke, you could always use trim like we do in real planes. I use trim constantly. That being said.....I have this on order so you might be right and this could be a great mod...I will see what it feels like but I'll bet even without the mod it's going to be an enormous improvement over my old CH Yoke and Rudder pedals!

I've 'downgraded' my H6 back to an H3 again since doing this video, because I find it gives virtually the same overall impression of movement but is much easier to climb aboard, without the 6 DOF 'turrets' restricting side to side and rearward adjustments.

      @@ShorebasePaul But mostly the red jets were operating at very light loads, with 30 or 40 passengers on the majority of crossings. The hydrofoils could seat 80, but maybe they used just as much fuel as a red jet. I know the hydrofoils were vastly more economical than the ill fated Cowes Express with its elaborate surface-effect vessel.

    I think the new ones are a step backwards in one respect. The passengers can no longer see out of the front.

      You have a point. I suppose the interior layout is now very comparable to the interior of a commercial airliner - you can’t see out of the front of those either.

    I have determined the stickiness has nothing to do with the detent stops centring and have undone the mod in this video - restored it to original and to day I have dumped the TB Velocity one and have ordered the honeycomb yoke and quadrant....

      Right, it's really two different problems. 1) the centering that this video address and then 2) the "stickiness" that the 3D printed mod is addressing.

  • @jamesbiggleworth4458
    @jamesbiggleworth4458 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks for the video but unfortunately for me the mod does diddly-squat! (no reflection on your video or effort for posting) I still get the stickiness. I am going to put back the white nylon/plastic spring locators/stops without the black rubber/foam spaces and see how that goes. Of utmost importance is the smoothness of the control! All Turtle Beach can say it that it frees up with use..... I have been using it now for 150 hours of flying by hand and not autopilot, and it is just as sticky as it was new. So how much use does it take to free up - never perhaps. I do not mind the detent as such it is the stickiness where you are trying to finesse a landing by pulling back against the tension which then suddenly lets go and moves too far and the nose of the aircraft goes way up and buggers up the landing! This relatively expensive yoke is crap. I do hope the Honeycomb brand of yoke goes back into production and once again becomes available because I will be dumping the Velocity one yoke and getting the Honeycomb as soon as I can. I suppose if I had a 3D printer I could design and print brackets to hold small bearings inside for the shaft to roll on - I am aware of the ghastly mod to put bearings on the out side of the box.

    • @ShorebasePaul
      @ShorebasePaul 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Coincidentally, I have now also fitted VanDeik's "Ghastly Mod" of the bracket outside of the box with the rubber tyred roller bearings supporting the yoke shaft underneath as it exits the front plastic collar. I have to say that it now works brilliantly. Now that the "sag", caused by the hands resting on the grips and weighting it down slightly is now fully supported by the roller bearings, so that the shaft moves in and out as smoothly as any other yoke that I posess, (an Alpha XPC, a Macbare, and even my Brunner CLS-E !). The combination of his bracket and my removal of the spring stops has made the pitch axis perfectly smooth, with a gradual transition of forward to backward resistance. The roll axis still has a very distinct centre detent, but that is much easier to live with. I agree completely that the standard factory performance of the VelocityOne yoke is almost unusable in respect of the awful pitch axis binding, making final approach and flaring very unpleasant. Amazing really, considering how much effort they've put into the rest of it. It's a similar story (IMHO) with their VelocityOne Joystick too, I find that excellent, in all but one respect, the ridiculously stiff centre detent. Luckilly though, I found a video here on TH-cam where the Guy explains a very simople mod of opening the base and either cutting the coil spring or replacing it with a weaker one, (which I did), and that too, is now my best all in one "portable" joystick. (I also have a Virpil and a Rhino FF, which are in a different league altogether, but the VelocityOne is much more compact for portable use.

    Very well put together video and clearly explained. Thank you. That 'detente' at the neutral point is really annoying on landing. This looks like it does the job. However, those Nyon bushes are there for a reason which is to act as a thrust bearing to prevent direct steel-to-plastic contact which is likely to wear the contact point on the travelling arm. Not only that but the collar in the nylon bushes also locates the spring ends radially so that it does not rub on the shaft. I suspect that the plastic on the travelling arm will wear and that the shaft will become scratched making the action less smooth. But time will tell. Perhaps a thin nylon washer to replace both bushes would be a possibility to prevent steel-plastic contact whilst not reducing the improved smoothness allbeit that the potential for shaft scratching / wear would still exist. Thank you for broadcasting this simple mod.

    • @ShorebasePaul
      @ShorebasePaul 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I hear what you're saying, but the collars on the bushes are plastic anyway, and a lot thinner than the central arm, so if there's any plastic to metal wear it would occur with them anyway, (and I doubt if they're available as spares). Also, the shaft is very hard stainless steel and the spings are not (so are softer), so I don't think there will be anyscratches on the shaft from them.
