Sweet, congrats to winner(s)! Thanks for the giveaway TBE!
Concerning zero prep games, I go even more zero prep without maps or even random tables-I just use a solo GM emulator and wing it. I just don’t have the time for much TTRPG gaming, so I just cut that whole step out. There’s a channel called The Evil Dungeon Master where he just runs some games co-op this way (2 players without a GM).
I'm not him, I'm Spartacus.😅 This was a really nice thing to do by the way.
I got second place, so will gladly take it if the winner won't/can't.
Huzzah!
How are you gonna give the book away if you lost it?
Excellent. This is a great dungeon. Naturally, I have a copy.
I will gladly accept on one of their behalves! Seriously though, congrats to VBS.
Spoiler, it’s not me
I hope it’s me
I'm just now hearing about all the hoopla regarding the Mythic Underworld since I'm not really connected to the "community." However, my introduction to rpgs was AD&D 1e, and later B/X (I still have all the original 1e books). So although this term is newer, this mindset was always the default way to play D&D for me (especially in Greyhawk). That's why I went back to playing OSR games, after playing 5e for a while, it's basically a totally different game.
How can I get this without going through the Steam hoops? I want to use it for story telling.
What a great conversation! I could sit back and listen to discussions like this for hours. Thanks guys!
Does C&C have rules for running domains and doing mass combat?
They’re going to get us Castle Greyhawk.
On magic items. The holy grail could not pass the great seal in Last Crusade. That is the price of immortality.
I forgot to mention in the video that Jon Molison made a great video about the Mythical Overworld. th-cam.com/video/bbGMgrAtrFo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rUqSyLVRWMlB-XCS
Hell yeah, two videos to watch now!
I have an idea for you: Compare Battlesystem, and Fields of Battle. I feel that large scale combat is an old school feature that not only is cool, but has never been explored properly.
Great video! It drives me nuts when I read those “Who plays with encumbrance anyway?” comments 😄 in the end as long as people have fun it doesn’t matter I guess. Personally I have always been a big fan of encumbrance rules and last year I switched to the BULK system from Pathfinder 2e. Works great for our group!
You got an amazing deal, i just paid 75 plus shipping for a 2nd ed box set.
Great video, I'd recommend C&C too. It's an easy to use system and the company, Troll Lord Games, is a great company to support. I think that the changes to their new version, called C&C Reforged, is mainly just changing names of things to non-OGL compatible versions (i.e. spell names, etc.). Since mechanics can't be copyrighted they aren't going to change any rules and the new books are backwards compatible with all of the old stuff. The biggest change is probably all new art in the Monsters & Treasure book, and probably some new art in the other books (can't recall exactly but I did support their Reforged Kickstarter).
From a grognard perspective I think the main difference is that in OD&D or AD&D your saves vs spells are going to absolutely improve as you level. In C&C however the save DC scales relative to the caster. So a high level Fighter will have almost no chance to save against a high level spell targeting a non-prime stat… it could be rough having only a 20% chance of surviving the enemy wizard’s opening spell with your 9th level guy.
@@aaronsomerville2124 im fine with that because the fighter has absurd modifiers and skills in other situations in a real heroic way.
@@TheBasicExpert I think it's fine too, just something you might want to account for in scenario design, etc. if you're really used to the expectations for the older systems. I like the older way better myself but I don't think it necessarily derives from some Platonic realm of RPG essences... just two slightly different approaches.
C&C is a solid & flexible set of rules and my go to fantasy rule set for the last half decade. It's essentially rules lite 3E and no bad thing because of that. Level based, AC, HP etc No feats or skills but an intuitive SIEGE engine mechanic that is easy to understand and apply at the table
I enjoy videos like these! We tried it and I agree, it could serve as a good replacement for your stock, high fantasy, heroic fantasy RPG replacing the modern game just fine.
I've been running a live play of pathfinder's Tyrant's Grasp Adventure Path with the Castles & Crusades ruleset, and it solves all the rules bloat that comes from a decade of feats, skills, and monsters built to combat the aforementioned bloat. Combats are fast, ability checks are a snap, I don't have to set up DCs for traps and challenges as the SEIGE system does that for me, all I have to do is determine what level the obstacle is and away we go!
I played White Plume Mountain using C&C at a convention last month. I have to say that it felt very similar to AD&D in play. Not precisely the same but very close.
the new books are being printed right now, and should be shipping to backers at some time around Christmas (from what Stephen Chenault was saying on his video). Mostly it's just a change in nomenclature i.e. from "magic missile" to " magi's missile", or some creature names.... Rules should be the same, new art, and lots of editing (we'll see if it's successful). The books you show should be just fine. What's great is if you are familiar with earlier editions and there are rules you like (or modules, or anything else really), it's dirt simple to import them into the game without breaking anything mechanically...
I took the idea of primary and secondary scores for my own game.
C&C has never been my game of choice, but I think it's great. The rules staying almost identical from printing to printing - even the text being almost identical - but with updates to the layout and artwork makes it just as easy to snap back into if you haven't played in years, different players can have different printings of the rulebooks and still have all the rules accurate still, but maybe on a slightly different page. When I was part of a game more regularly, it was a great game for transitioning 3.x players into a more old-school mindset for gameplay, and while I haven't run C&C for 5e players, I ran a lot of 5e between 2012(from the first D&D Next playetest) to 2017-18, and I would say it's probably _almost_ as easy to get into C&C from 5e as it is from 3.x. Not to mention that Troll Lord Games not only has been decently consistent with quality of products over the years, and they even give the core rules out for free as PDFs. (Slightly older printings, but same rules still.) That's always a hard price to beat for trying a game, let alone being able to play it fully without spending a dime, if you were so inclined.
Remember, the Player's Handbook is free as a PDF! Trollzah!
I am all about the alternatives. The problem seems to be that this is a pluralistic environment where there are so many "alternatives" and it's been hard to choose just one to focus on. 🤷♂️
Great video and I've also found that C&C is a familiar game for 5e heads while simultaneously providing advantages of old-school D&D to the DM. My caveat emptor pieces would be: 1. Saves should be overhauled or imported from B/X, their linearity scaling at higher levels renders them useless at higher levels. The Siege engine works for everything else, but the saving throw system needs drastic overhauling (which shouldn't take long.) Look at BFRPG and use those saves, they will be compatible with C&C and its racial options. 2. You will be best served by importing game procedures from AD&D and/or B/X, C&C is modern in the sense that it hand waves a lot of that stuff in favor of DM adjudication, but if your DM'ing is anything like mine, you value procedures like morale, reaction, lair %, etc, you will find C&C remarkably barren (although it has the BEST encumbrance rules ever written, IMO.) The game also assumes a 5' square scale in a lot of places like 3e for some odd reason. 3. I do not like the variable Challenge Level range (modifiers you apply to a Challenge Base roll of 12 or 18) as written. Fiddly and numerous +1's there, -1's there were one of my least favorites aspects of 3e. I prefer fixed challenge levels (0 for no detriments, 5 for medium detriments, 10 for hard, 15 for very hard.) This allows for straight-forward CK/Player bargain states.
an IQ of 100 was average among college students, back in the day. It is not average for a country´s population.
C&C is expensive, specially outside the US. Sticking with basic fantasy or 3.5 which I got recently for half a price of C&C.
If your fine with pdfs the second latest printing for the players handbook and monsters and treasure are free on troll lord games website, that’s all you need to play, the castle keepers guide is great for alternate rules, but not necessary and most of the other books just expand on the core game
Is Troll Lord Games' site unavailable outside the US? They have the core rules free as PDFs on their site. The player's handbook is the 7th printing, Monsters & Treasure is I think 3rd or 4th printing.
@Unregistered.HyperCam.2 shipping is expensive, pdf is not my thing.
@@Unregistered.HyperCam.2 It's the Shipping Costs that makes C&C so hard to buy, I live in Canada. I paid as much for shipping as I did for the books. On the Last Kickstarter (Re-Forged) the shipping was fixed- at least for that instance, I'm hoping that they have fixed it for the store permanently. The good thing is you only need the PHB and many oof their books are free as a PDF. All your old books of AD&D are easily made compatible.
Shadowdark comes to top of mind.
I've already reviewed Shadow Dark. I think it is also in the same niche.
I really enjoy C&C - I've only ever really solo'd it, but I preferred it much more than 5e. I tried to get my old group to make the switch to C&C when WOTC engaged in their shenanigans a couple years back, but they never did, which is a shame.
Well here's hoping for the future that they consider switching.
NO YOU CANT RECOMMEND THINGS I DONT LIKE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH IM GOING INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will read this today and report back.
Just played a session at Mythic Con 3 players at the table were 5e players who just wanted a game at that time. They were playing and got it in 15 minutes. The DM Had a simple index card that described the siege engine and gave 1 to each player. It hits a modern roll high is always good, linear d20 curve feel but doesnt suffer from sheet sprawl like 3/3/5. Another point you didn't mention is that its essentially compatible with any d20 adventures a DM has laying around. For dms who prefer published stuff thats a nice selling point.
Seeing all the contrarian behavior in the comments from both the created and viewers has been the highlight of my day😂
I've never played C&C, but since you asked for other recommendations, Dragonbane (by Free League) is currently my favorite version of D&D. It's a true skill-based d20 game that hits all the Old School vibes, but incorporates more modern gaming sensibilities. As one who grew up on B/E/AD&D 1e games, Dragonbane is literally top-notch.
Good point, all the foundational RPGs assumed and encouraged solo play. ODDs first issue and Garys first article was solo gaming in strategic review, Traveller explicitly calls it a 'mode'. Tunnels and trolls was built for it. Solo gaming to me is alot like writing in a diary, or doing some ad hoc creative writing. It just has a framework for driving the story and outcomes. Nobody feels weird when they say they relaxed and did some writing on their book.
I have this, i havent run anything in a while. I just keep supporting the independent game producers.
I really liked the intro do Castles and Crusades, but I gave up on the game when I got to the class section which was the very next page.
Mind if I ask why? Honestly curious. Don't know if you mean the class choice, functions & features of different classes, etc.
@@Unregistered.HyperCam.2 I think less is more. For example, why is there a fighter and a paladin and a knight and a barbarian? And Ranger is basically a fighter + wilderness survival stuff. And a Bard has a d10 hit die? Are they basically fighters too? Can't I just pick fighter and play it like a warrior poet? Instead of paladin, can't I just pick fighter and add lay on hands as a power and play a religious character? I think this is unnecessary bloat and restrictive both as a player because I have to choose an archetype designed by someone else, and as a GM because now I have to design a setting to incorporate these classes.
@@Joshuazx Makes sense. I started with 3.0 and AD&D 1e is my game of choice, so the larger amount of classes that are more specific aren't really an issue to me. I can completely understand if you prefer it as just four classes & demihumans, or just four classes or even just three, that the dozen classes would be an easy rejection.
@@Unregistered.HyperCam.2 At least Castles and Crusades has more martial classes than magic classes.
