Mtskheta was the ancient capital of Kartli, the East Georgian Kingdom from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, and was also the location where Christianity was proclaimed as the official religion of Georgia in 337. Till date, it still remains the headquarters of the Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church. Mtskheta is not only one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities but also one of the oldest cities in Georgia. It is about 20 kilometers to the north of Tbilisi, at the point where the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers meet.
