    Interesting video and comments. When designing cycleways it would help if the designers made right turns (and other complex manoeuvres) 'clear and obvious' and also consistent. Then we would not have to second guess how to make the turn - it would be obvious. So I don't mind how they do it but be consistent. Thanks for making the videos. Is it always sunny in London? Or do you only make videos on sunny days? Thanks again.

    I believe French road rules allow hook turns (turn left to turn right) for cyclists at all junctions unlike in the UK where the hook turn markings indicate those where you are allowed to -- which, if properly advertised, makes for good standardisation (same with contraflow being authorised in all 30km/h roads in France -- though the prefecture de police in Paris is fighting against it arguing that since 30km/h became a blanket rule it led it to be applicable in roads unsuited to it! But that's another story for another day). Some communes have signs to help nudge cyclists into doing so but as Altis's video I've linked below explains, there really is very little clarity on where you are supposed to wait. At least in London, the hook turn markings do make it clear where to wait (and in a case I have in mind at the Tavistock Place/Tavistock Square intersection, the council/TfL refused to install them for some movements because of a lack of waiting space). th-cam.com/users/shortsK8TIh0A_bSU?app=desktop

      Really interesting thank you! The markings do at least make it clear, I wonder if it would make sense to put in a generalised change to the Highway Code as well in a U.K. context

    I personally don’t mind an occasional right turns in two stages, but they really highlight where cycling is just an afterthought to councils and TfL. When they are not willing to reallocate road space, it’s very easy for them to just tell cyclists to turn in two stages.

    I haven’t worked in London for over thirty years but I do really enjoy watching your videos. I’m sure the infrastructure is far from perfect but it (probably) is better than most UK cities. What I also really like is how you show and highlight those bits of London that are easily accessible but not found if your idea of London is The Tube Map. I rarely visit, but came to visit my brother recently in Earls court and took my bike on the train. It was fantastic getting around on the bike compared to where I live in Manchester. At 9'30" you mention it's (understandably) not possible to cover all routes requested. Just a thought, but where this is due to a lack of suitable cycling infrastructure, or some particular 'killer issue' (could be a dreadful major junction or an unmitigated recent development), it might prove just as useful to produce the odd roundup of a few such non-starters. OK, odds against but perhaps someone from the local authority in question may be watching, whether a decision maker or a councillor irritated by the unability to let kids cycle safely to/from a local school .... thereby potentially removing much car traffic and gaining said councillor votes from happy happy constituents (d'ya see wot I did there? 🙂)

    Bedford Square is technically one-way with no cycle contra on the carriageway. Not sure if you missed that you're supposed to go left and along the funky-colored space on the square before rejoining at the end. Directional arrows are on the ground so wayfinding isn't ideal, although the space is wide enough it isn't usually an issue to avoid pedestrians. Obviously no vehicles when you went down, but could be times when doing that could create conflict with taxis, delivery vans, and construction vehicles, especially when the parking spaces are full. Bayley Street is two-way for cycles. There used to be a blue cycle symbol on the bollard next to the Santander bikes as well, but it disappeared a while ago. Can still see it on Google Maps from a couple years ago when there was demolition work going on.

  • @stephensaines7100

    @3:41 / 17:01 The chamfered curb to delineate between cycle and pedestrian space is an excellent way to separate the two most of the time, but to still leave the option in a tight or emergency situation to cross-over to avoid an incident. Ditto later when you commented on the chamfered concrete barriers, albeit you'd have to' use a much tighter angle of incidence to climb over them. Even if you did go down, at least the hard corners are missing when you impact.

    • @Londoncycleroutes
      @Londoncycleroutes 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It’s 13 mins if you live on the northern line platforms at Archway and want to get to the platforms at TCR and leave exactly when a train is coming! but I always use the citymapper timings at 9am on a weekday from the point the video starts to where it ends - so 30 mins includes a short walk to the station, getting in and out and an average wait for a train at peak time. It’s still pretty generous as the video starts and ends near both stations and people may have to go further afield!

    Great video as always. One slight route optimisation suggestion: After the crossing at St Pancras/Euston Road, I usually prefer to turn right immediately onto Bidborough St instead of later at Leigh Street. Bidborough St is a bit wider than Leigh St and practically traffic-free. Ok Cartwright Gardens isn't terribly wide either, so I guess road width is a toss-up, or is a point slightly in favour of Leigh St. Nevertheless, with Bidborough St, you have one less traffic light + zebra crossing to think about, so it's also marginally faster

      agree. I’d be curious to see a video bringing together these routes as they probably make up a pretty decent network now that you can use to make your own alternative routes by joining various bits up. If you’re willing to occasionally get off to walk to cross some busy roads I bet there is actually decent ‘quiet’ coverage now in most of london. Similarly a ‘black spot’ video would be good where there are obvious missing parts

      I couldn't agree more. It's with great envy as well as 'getting to know the parts of London' that I've never had the opportunity to explore in my prior sojourns there. Even parts that I'm familiar with from almost two decades ago near the end of the trip, (Tottenham Court Rd up to King's Cross area), look far more inviting to cyclists now than they did then. This trip time would have been multiples greater for me, not because I'm slow (I'm actually a very avid distance cyclist), but I see so much to explore along the way. I'm loving these vids.

      I think they have quite a narrow beam so they don't always get the whole waiting area, or at least they're set up like that often

    I'll have to do this when I'm feeling adventurous. I've cycled Camden south, so I must've gone north 🤣 but my favourite vegan Chinese is or was at Archway, I've not been in years now so this looks great especially over the bridge x

    TBH you're safer and quicker on the bus routes - Lea Bridge Rd, High Road, Leyton Road. But these routes are good for locals on short journeys, not that they'll ever get on a bike.

    Have always found this route inherently dangerous due to the traffic turning in / across junctions and as you say poor standard of driving ,- east to central via Olympic park, Hackney Wick, Vic park and through to Shoreditch from there is relatively quiet often with less or slower traffic - have consistently used that route over the last 10 years

      I wish TfL would improve the design on C2, there’s a lot of changes they could make that would make a big difference. It’s such an important corridor and it shouldn’t be left to stagnate
