Bikepacking the Colorado Trail - Day 11 - The CT saves the best for last
Rolling Mountain to DURANGO!
Featuring Blackhawk Pass, Indian Trail Ridge, Kennebec Pass, and a long, flowy descent into Durango. Every bit of this section of trail was new to us. Everyone says it, but it's true - the San Juan mountains are beautiful.
In 2021, four roadies attempted to ride the Colorado Trail with van support. After seven long, miserable days, we had to pull the plug in Silverton exhausted and devastated. Three of us returned in 2023 with improved mountain bike and bikepacking skills to attempt the trail again, this time choosing to bikepack unsupported. This is our revenge trip.
The Colorado Trail bikepacking route goes from Denver to Durango and includes 539 miles, 72,500 ft of climbing, and an average elevation over 10,000 ft. The high point is 13,270 ft and is part of a 20 mile section of trail that does not drop below 12,000 ft a single time. Bikepacking.com rates the difficulty as a 9.
Despite the rugged terrain, altitude, remoteness, and logistical difficulties, the views and experiences along the way make for an truly memorable trip.

Amazing videos, we've already watched them all!! What is the name of the las music from video (17:11)? I didn't find this song in the links you provided. Next year will be my second attempt.
It's "Moments in Time"
So tough breathing at that high an altitude. I'm making it all the way through your trip. I've ridden many sections of the CO trail but not these harsh far SE sections. Keep pushing!
You're right, that's another factor making this trail hard. We came from about 500 ft above sea level where we live but even if you live in Denver at 5,000 ft, 13,000 feet is tough!
looks awesome
One of the best descents anywhere!
Great job on this series. If I’m riding train to Leadville. Is 4 days doable? Thanks.
Do you mean 4 days per week? If so I would say yes as long as you get quality work in and include plenty of long endurance riding.
When I did the CT, I hated seeing the mountain bikers cruise past me on the downhills but loved passing them on the uphills. Ha
It's pretty demoralizing when hikers are keeping up with you or even passing you. One of the low points. But the descents make it worth it for sure.
Solid work on the videos! This part of the trail brought back some good/ bad memories when I biked the CT in 2022. I woke up at 4am to push through the high point early because of thunderstorms. I was moving quick descending the high point, a rock was kicked up into my derailleur and snapped it in half. I ended up taking off the derailleur and chain and had to hike-a- bike down into Silverton. Luckily I messaged my gf from my Garmin after the accident - she was meeting me that evening.. She was able to get the new part in Grand Junction. I got everything working properly and was able to head out again the next day! What a good time! I may bike the trail again this summer. Cheers
Thanks! Sounds like a similar experience to what happened to me on day 7 of this trip.
@@FlyingWithBikes hahaha I saw that episode. It almost makes me want to go with a fixed gear.. ⚙️
@@AndyOnTheMountain almost...
Hey what month did you go in 2021. My buddy and I went on the 17th of July and met some guys that were being supported by a van. My buddy (also a roady) had a rough go due to not buying a mountain bike until 2 months before we left.
July 23 - August 2 was our 2021 attempt. Denver to Durango route and made it it Silverton before having to bail.
Ok we started about 7 days before you so that must have been another group I saw. Did you see the guys with the donkeys?
@@oatfieldwhitney7552 hmm, I don't recall seeing donkeys...
This was a truly awesome video series. I watched one episode per night before sleep so I could dream of bikepacking alpine trails (it didn’t work). But now that I’m done I’m craving more!
I love hearing that people stuck with the whole series. Thanks for watching.
Just found this. Great stuff so far!
Thanks for watching!
I am really enjoying watching these videos!
Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed them
As if you’re going to get a second motel room just because you have a third person. I mean. Really. 😂
We would have gladly slept in our tents, but no camping allowed in town!
well done guys, amazing trip.
Thank you!
It doesn't seem like you are carrying much gear. Are you doing tent/bivy? Much extra clothes for cold nights?
I carried a two person tent that Nick and I shared. It's the grey bag on top of my handlebar bag. Jake carried his own tent. Very limited clothes but definitely had warm layers like pants and a nice warm puffy jacket. Warm sleeping bag as well. Good gear can stuff down pretty well!
There is a pretty good view of the tent bag in this video at the top of Slumgullion Pass
Congratulations! Great work. I like to do the CT in July 24 and it was helpful to see the segments for planning. You had very good weather most of the time. May i ask at what time did you do the trail? THX!
We did the week before and after Labor Day. July should be fine, but more likely to still see some snow and the time we went tends to be a little drier (although we had some storms on Day 1 and could see some bad ones on day 2 as well). Good luck and keep a flexible plan each day!
Thanks for the excellent videos and showing the good time and bad times that happen in big ride. I really like how you start the videos off with the map and elevation plan for the day. I'm starting my planning to do the CT and find most of the videos riding Denver to Durango. I've ridden parts of the CT between Durango and Silverton and that area is no joke. You're at high elevation for a long time so I'm thinking of riding it Durango to Denver (It's 3k more total doing it this way) so I can hit it with a fresher body and would be able to time the weather better when in this area. Do you see any concerns riding it South to North or any other input you may have? Thanks!
I appreciate the kind words! I think most people ride and hike Denver to Durango because the more gradual elevation gain is a little easier to acclimate to. Climbing from 7000 feet in Durango right up to over 12,000 feet seems like it would be brutal. Also, the section between Silverton and Durango is probably the most beautiful part of the trail so I think a lot of people like to save it for last. All that said, many have done Durango to Denver and the CT race alternates directions, so it's certainly doable. One other note - now that Cathedral Cabins is there between Silverton and Buena Vista with a resupply store (which has just about anything you could possibly need), the longest stretch without resupply for us was Denver to Breck. If you can hit the Stagestop Saloon on a day it's open though, you'll at least have pizza to look forward to.
Binged watch all the videos while watching the college football bowl games. I liked the length of the videos. They were edited down to about 10 or 11 minutes (except the last one) but still captured the essence of the rides. And while the soreness will eventually go away, you have memories that will last a lifetime. Outstanding! BTW…what’s next? 😝
Thanks for watching and I really appreciate the kind words! It's tough to toss so much footage, but that's exactly what I was going for with the length. Very happy to hear it worked for you. I've got a few ideas for what's next, but I'm always looking for more ideas.
Revolting opening scene. I was turned off and turned you off.
Looks like you guys had good weather!
We got pretty lucky other than the storms on the first night
Good stuff! Love that trail. Did it in July 22. Can’t wait to go back and do it again!
Thanks!
Amazing video, I'm from Brazil and I've always wanted to see what bikepacking is like in other countries, great content
Glad you enjoyed it. Got any good routes to share from Brazil? Always looking for the next challenge!
I tuned in everyday! Nice work. 87 rotten tomatoes 🍅

Bananaman with the play by play is absolutely hilarious

Very inspiring!!
Thanks so much!
I found your channel yesterday and just finished binging the trip, what a top notch video production. Congratulations on your successful adventure and thank you so much for sharing with everyone.
Thank you for the kind words. Putting all the videos together was a lot of work and I'm very happy to hear people are enjoying them.
Awesome work guys, and great series. I'm looking forward to helping out again for attempt #3 😉
Thank you! Couldn't have done it without you.
Slumgullion is the word that best describes me after a long ride with you guys
It's also fun to say
This has been an enjoyable video set. I never watch a set of videos, and here I am waiting for Episode 10. You've successfully discouraged me from taking this on! Maybe 30 years ago, but not now. HOWEVER, I'd like your take on what is important to take on ultralight trips like this and on what worked and didn't on stowing, packing, carrying things. Any other advice.
Thank you. Very happy to hear you are enjoying the videos! I may try to work on a gear video for the future as there is a lot to cover. There is definitely a lot of trial and error, and going on a smaller trip first to gain experience and try out different ways of carrying gear is a good idea. Overall, I'd say once you get past the idea that you can get by carrying very minimal gear, the hardest part for us was finding places to stash enough food to last between resupply locations.
@@FlyingWithBikes Makes sense. Years ago I used to ultralight backpack. We'd sometimes start out with food in plastic grocery bags, carrying it by hand for the first day! There's some nice MTB tours feasible here in VA and nearby I'm checking out. Would be great to have people to go with. My adventure friends seem to have gotten old and fat, or died.
Think you for the Christmas videos
Think you for Christmas videos lol good job 🎉
Thanks for watching. Merry Christmas! 😂
Thank you so much for this series!! I’m planning my trip and your videos are helping me answer lots of questions!!
Thanks for watching!
Great videos! This is a dream of mine, so way to go 👍
Thank you!!
"What day are we on?" "Day 5." -It's day 7 My favorite joke of this series
😂
Glad i can watch and not do. Lol. Give me easy trails I'm oldish 😅
There are some fun sections on the CT but this is not one of them!
@@FlyingWithBikesentertainment for me lol .but I am glad people do go or I wouldn't see the beauty of it all
🤟
Were you not able to set it up ss and maybe lock out the shock or over inflate it? Just curious if that would work well enough to not have to walk it out 10mi…
We definitely thought about it, but even with the shock locked out it moves enough that it would be a ton of stress on the chain and the entire drivetrain. The Sargents Mesa section is so awful that for the most part you're going to push your bike up the hills and ride down them. So with this strider setup I was able to push up and ride down WITH my suspension which is very much needed for this incredibly steep and rocky section. We had a few miles of road when we hit the end of the trail, but it was almost all downhill to where we were meeting Evan. The silver lining of the whole thing is that we got lucky that it happened near the end of the day, and Evan was able to meet us around noon the next day, which turned about to be about the amount of time we needed to hike and coast to the trailhead.
You couldn't make it a single speed, by shortening the chain and using a cog at the CL of the chainring or the smallest cog if this inline option slips? Hik-a-bike would have been on the upcoming menu, but the downhills would be OK... at least until you could find a bike shop.
Great question! We thought about the single speed option, but on a full suspension bike that's a lot of stress on the chain and drivetrain without the derailleur there to hold tension through the rear suspension travel. We thought about locking out the rear suspension too but even then it moves a not insignificant amount and this trail is really rough. In the end we decided on the strider bike, which turns out to not be a huge disadvantage on the remaining section of Sargents Mesa as almost all of this trail is hike-a-bike up and ride down.
@@FlyingWithBikesyou are giving away the cliffhanger!
@@kenyates7269 don't worry... you'll see!
No threesomes in the motel room guys!
Me Casa has awesome food!! Fantastic videos Zak! 🤩
Thank you, Mark! We always used to go to Mi Casa on ski trips. During our 2021 attempt, I was looking forward to eating there all day, but we took so long that we didn't get into Breckenridge until about 11pm and it was closed. This time things went much more according to plan!
Kudos to stopping to admire the views. An important part of touring / bikepacking that is often neglected.
So true! It's easy to get hyperfocused on pushing ahead, but the epic views are truly a rare experience that you should always take the time to appreciate.
Didn't realize bananaman was a cinematographer too!
He's working on his apprenticeship! We have something special for you on the final day.
These are awesome videos so far! Cant wait to see the rest
Just wait til we get to day 7-8!
Can't wait for the rest of the parts! Really enjoyed this!
Thanks! Releasing one video per day over the next week or so
Hey. I remember you guys. Great video! Passed me somewhere between Cataract and Stoney Pass. I was the old guy. Anyhow, I just posted my video of the CT if u want to check it out.
No way! I remember you. I love seeing different peoples' experiences of the trail. Congratulations on finishing and what a great story.
Poor Jake was stuck on his back like a turtle
It won't be the last of the crashes but he's a tough dude!
Anyone notice the escaped moo moo in this one?
Thank you for capturing how hard things can get on the CT. You hear people say there's a lot of hike a bike, but it doesn't really give an indication of how steep or difficult it can be.
So true! It's a beautiful trail but it makes you earn it.
Sweet!
Just road this trail for the first time yesterday
Never want to see your son go down....time to put the ALAN back together.
