[HD] North Alabama's Railroad Hotspot: Railfanning Decatur Part 1 (7-18-24)
In this first of a two part series, we visit north Alabama and the city of Decatur, a port city and major junction on both the NS and CSX railroads. Both lines share a single-tracked railroad bridge across the Tennessee river, and with over 30 trains crossing per day, delays and waits are common. We'll see a steady mixing of traffic on a cool, cloudy July day. Enjoy!

Nicknamed the "magic city", Birmingham is at a crossroads of major routes for the CSX and Norfolk Southern, both of which now have large fleets of special units commemorating past railroads or rebuild programs. We'll see how many of these we can find in different parts of the metro area. Enjoy!

West of Birmingham, Bessemer is a historic city once important in the steel industry. While the city has declined more recently, it is still a hub for trains and especially the Norfolk Southern. One of my favorite spots to just hang out and watch trains, I returned to Irondale in March to check out the activities. Lots of manifests and a few through running trains made for a great show with 9 trains in about two hours. Enjoy!

I had almost a whole day to check out the rails in Birmingham. Starting off with a few catches in Pelham, I found some new locations to get good views of the action in the downtown corridor. Rail traffic here can be quiet some times and very active others, but this afternoon kept us busy with 7 trains in under two hours. Enjoy!

Over 6000 photos highlight the different partial phases of the eclipse, starting with C1 at 11:41am through C4 at 2:21pm. Filmed just outside Black Rock, Arkansas, on April 8th, 2024, using a Sony AX53 camcorder with a UV lens and a pair of eclipse shades taped to the front. Music is 'Mars' by Gustav Holst. Enjoy!
