I made this video in hopes to help others in changing their viper track. Most of it should apply to the srx chassis too? It’s a long video, but I myself struggled with changing my first track on my viper and hoped that the time I took to make this video would help someone else, eventually. This video is step-by-step directions to skid removal, track change, and skid installation. Although all t...

Thanks Jack. Now I'm going to need to find one of those (lol) 🤫
@@Fifty-Some-Thing I’d consider selling my 4x4 and can. Only after I get my triple pipes dialed in, and would only sell them for the price I’d have to pay to get another set.
Great video Jack. Should help many a person to swap out their first track.
@@Fifty-Some-Thing thank you
Had one of these back in the day. Certainly one of my favorite sleds. Ultra smooth motor.
@@patrickcaudill2939 yes! I’m in love with these older muscle sleds. I actually ditched the bender 4x4 and can. Switching to triple pipes, so she’ll be a ripper. More videos to come on those pipes will be posted on my channel too.
what size lugs are you running?
@@liammason8754 the lugs in this video are 1 inch lugs. However, I am currently swapping to a 1.25 lug with 144 studs. The 1 inch track just spun honestly, I’ll probably always buy a 1.25 or bigger from here on out.
@@jackward1364what did you have to do to clear the 1.25 with studs
@@liammason8754 Here are some guidelines for track applications and gearing on 1997 and newer 2-stroke model Yamaha Snowmobiles: • 1" tracks can be used and studded with the use of proper heat exchanger and tunnel protectors. When using 1" tracks, studs up to 1.175" can be used safely. • 1.25” and 1.5” tracks can be used without studs with the removal of any existing stud protectors. • 1.25" tracks can be used and studded with the use of proper heat exchanger and tunnel protectors and the replacement of the stock 9 tooth front axle drivers with 8 tooth drivers. 8 tooth drivers are required for necessary clearance between the taller track and stud protectors. When installing 8 tooth drivers, the final drive gear ratio is affected, therefore you will need to change gears in the chaincase to correct this to the proper ratio that you want. Calculating drive ratio with 8 tooth drivers: This can be done by multiplying your 9 tooth ratio by 1.13. • Example: If the gearing you have been running is 23/40, which is 1.74 ratio, then take 1.74 x 1.13 which = 1.97. So your gear ratio with 23/40 gearing and & tooth drivers will be 1.97. • In this situation you will need to select the proper gears to correct the ratio back to the desired 1.74 ratio. By using a 24T top gear and a 37T bottom gear (which is a 9 tooth driver 1.54 ratio, 1.54 x 1.13 - 1.74 with 8 tooth drivers) this will be corrected. Hope this helps. It came from a Max Performance catalog back in the day. To answer your question, if you want to run a 1.25 track you’d need to remove your heat exchanger protectors. If you want to run a STUDDED 1.25 track, you need to switch to 8 tooth drivers and KEEP your heat exchanger protectors.
@@jackward1364thank you so much
@ absolutely man, good luck.
Why are you swapping it for a track in worst shape?
@@shednanigan I am parting out the sled anyways. I wanted to take the new track for my other viper, and figured I might as well make a video for the Yamaha community on how to put a track back in.
@jackward1364 ohhh ok gotcha! Great work !
To sell the snowmobile after he's done with a junk track to a different guy who will get screwed.
@@Quadguy83 if you read my last reply, you would understand that this isn’t the case. If you want to leave negative comments on videos, do it elsewhere or just watch someone else’s videos. I don’t spend my time and effort making these videos for comments like the one you left. Thanks for understanding.
Keep in mind, 8 tooth drivers reduce efficiency as well as require extra track tension wich also reduces efficiency.
Good note, thanks Scott!
If you dont run electric start, you can also run the srx front clutch side mount. The viper one has a section removed and 2 bolts instead of 3 for a srx. The viper one has been known to fail inder ditch banging and heavey traction launches.
Are you talking about the srx torque arm?
@jackward1364 no, the mount on the front sid of the motor. Vipers use the same case but remove part of the mount and one bolt to install a starter. It makes this .ount fail under hard loads lke jumping or drag racing with lots of traction. With the srx arm it will last under normal riding. In stock form, they broke often. It will last with
@ interesting, I’ve never heard of that. Can you send me a picture if you have time? Either from a parts diagram or actual picture would be fine. I can’t seem to find/understand what it would look like. 319-826-0338. Thanks Scott! You’re always a good help to me.
Muggles junking sleds and sell the engine, or cylinders with the flanges on. Later trying to sell the pipes.
Where’d you get the blue tunnel plating
Hard to find. They aren't made anymore. They were made by Yamaha, and were sold as aftermarket back in the day. The purpose was extra tunnel support. Best place to find a set would be on the Yamaha facebook groups, but would cost you $300-$400 for a good set.
Do yourself a favor on those pipes to keep them cracking. Get some header wrap and a hose clamp. One loop around the center of the belly of the pipe with the header wrap and then hose clamp it on there and it'll stop the natural frequency from cracking the metal. The way two-stroke pipes work is they run at their natural frequency and that is also what destroys them.
Thanks Jack! I saw your post on the group and it's great you put such a good video together for the viper owners.
Thanks for keeping these old yamaha 2 stroke alive!
Nice 👍
Duuuuude thank you SO much for this video. Absolute lifesaver. Doing a track on my 99 vmax 600 triple and the detail you have here cleared up all my questions!
Thank you Doug for your kind comment! I just replied to your post on Facebook too. Glad it helped. Jack.
ugh another trip to the chiropractor DOO yourself a favor and swap in a skidoo sc3 skid I have done it dozens of times for my customers the improvement is incredable
I believe you are forgeting some very important steps that will make certain that any head is clamping perfectly evenly everywhere!
What steps am I forgetting?
@@jackward1364 Thread prep and lubrication especially with the low torque values all our little 2 strokes have (outboards sleds bikes ect) 50 years of doing this sort of thing has shown me that wire brushed bolts and chasing holes (not with a tap) but a soft metal brush or thread chaser to clean and smooth the threads and lubricating both the bolt face and threads will make sure each bolt will provide the same clamping force for a given torque it seems every manufacture has a different idea while using similar fasteners (with or without washers) threaded into similar materials not a new idea just the one that always works every time especially when dealing with engines with known or past issues
@@deantheboatguy1437completely agree. Would have been a good extra step.
I notice jets are different at least in the vmax 700s. Great video! I’ll support and admire anyone who appreciates Yamaha triples lol. I’m currently working on developing a method to reliably and consistently design and build my own tuned pipes for my Yamahas. Maybe I’ll make a video about it. And just maybe if you’re willing I could send you a set of tuned pipes for a viper to test. I’ll do my own testing but it could never hurt having another knowledgeable and passionate person to help test. Definitely subscribing and definitely will follow this project! Keep up the good work! And if you want another resource there’s a great book by Gordon Jennings for two stroke tuning if you don’t already have it I would definitely get a copy if I were you!
Dude, that’s awesome! I would definitely test a set out for you! That would be so cool. Thanks for the positivity. You should totally make a video about them, and I’ll share them in the Facebook groups I admin. Search me up on Facebook, and we can chat further. Thanks!
Perfection 👌Thank you! I´m about to put SLP pipes on my 700 this winter. What strikes me is.. wouldnt SLP (or whatever pipe-brand you got) calculate the PTO pipe to less back-pressure then the other two when the head is as it is? Or do all pipe-brands for the Viper require that you work on your head (for best performance that is)?
Mikael Berntsson you should be doing head work to any brand triple pipes you install. It’s not necessary that SLP doesn’t calculate it for you… it’s more so how the head was factory designed to work with a single pipe. I’m glad you found the video helpful, thanks for the comment!
i have a couple of questions, i have the same go kart but i need the rear tires out but i cant seem to find the correct socket size nor can i find a rim and tire for my yerf dog 32001 can you help me maybe by linking me some websites that have em please?
Hey bro can u show me how to install electric start on the old klx110? I’ve been looking for a video.. I see it has the mounts for it?
Got idle screw theory backwards. Turning the screw increases idle speed.
Love it. Saw the name and realized were both part of the srx group on facebook.
beautiful..
Where are the parts from?
Partzilla
Hope you put them on the wall studs, probably not great for it to only be through drywall
Sounds great , im running my 87 mx 470 with the pipe only . the trumpet sound is crazy straight out the side 😅

Most after exhaust do not perform better then stock on older Yamahas without jetting changes
The bender can and 4x4 require no jetting changes. Only the bender triple pipes did.
Can you just ground the wire without removing the oem part?
Did you try that?
Check a coolant level ☝️
going to fix thanks for the info.
How’d you get the tunnel to shine so good!
Mothers mag and aluminum polish, and a foam drill polishing ball.
Nothing like a tripple!!!
I have a v max 4. It is loud with psi pipes. It is a nice snowmobile. But I sold it for a thunder cat
Hey Jack, did you find that the new bushings were very tight. Hard to get over the sway bar? If so what did you do?
Hi Andrew, just saw this. Sorry for the delayed reply. Yes, the bushing goes on fairly tight. There are two different size sway bars depending on the year and model. Be sure that you ordered the correct size. Most wedge style sleds have 9/16 inch sway bar, while some touring sleds have 5/8 inch.
My g your left crank looks like it’s about to come off I use a gt performer BMX and it does not look that bad
