A short visit to the monumental olive tree and its surroundings in the village of Panasos.
The Association of Cretan Olive Municipalities has declared the olive tree a natural monument due to its distinct relief trunk. This variety, called "Chontroelia," is grafted onto the rootstock of a wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. Oleaster). The base of the tree has a diameter of 4.5 meters and a circumference of 12.1 meters. It was planted sometime between 1100-800 BC, during the Sub-Minoan to the First Geometric Period of Cretan history.
