Temperate Rainforests Of The UK
We associate rainforest with the tropics but the temperate region rainforests are also important. They occur in areas of high rainfall without a long dry season such as the Atlantic coast of the UK. One such temperate rainforest in Devon is a dense oak wood with a mass of twisted, shrunken and bending trees with their branches covered with a mass of mosses and lichens.

Famous for its chalk grasslands and beechwoods, the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has its scarp slope to the north-west, a plateau on the top and a gentle dip slope to the south-east. The chalk has alkaline soils, which are very well drained and having been grazed for a very long time have chalk grasslands on the plateau resulting in a feast of wild flowers.
