An Introduction To George Nelson, Dale and Co's gelatine manufactory at Emscote Mills, Wharf Street, Warwick. In the year 1837 the firm applied for a patent for their gelatine, which had caught the public taste and was getting in great demand, but it was not until the following year that the patent was granted. It was at this period that Mr. Nelson introduced his "Opaque" gelatine, which immedi...

Having been a keen runner most of my life I know every inch of this canal towpath. I remember the loud banging & clattering coming from The Fleur De Lys pie factory as I passed.

I worked there in the late 80's. I was considered youg enough to work in baked packing, then when I turned 18 I was asked to train as a floater. It was more money and only the cool blokes got to be floaters, so naturally I accepted. But then I realised I hated factory work and quit. I miss working there. It was a simple life where you got paid in cash.

I was on this trip also-working as a steward-my first long trip. I remember that I slept through the storm in the Australian Bite. We had some pretty rough weather at times I recall. She was a dirty old ship though!

Nice to see a piece of Warwick history. I used to go along this stretch of canal around this time on my training runs. I remember a lot of noise coming from the factory as I passed.

This is an excellent find. I had a Great Uncle who fell down the lift shaft in 1895 aged 15. He was a labourer at the gelatine works. I was looking for information about the mill and came across your video. Thank you.

Thanks for the footage. I worked there in 73, I guess from March to June. I was on a holiday from Australia and answered an advert for labour required by a contractor. I lived in the pub in Warwick, I think it was called the Crown, and walked to work in the mornings. Getting home some afternoons took a while cause there were a number of small pubs I'd call into. Had some good times there and met some great people.

In 1962/3 I ran a fish and Chip shop in Lichfield, Staffordshire. I wanted to sell their pies. I had to travel to Warwick to be vetted, and have my premises visited BEFORE they would even consider serving me! I had to be far enough from the nearest other Fleur-de-Lys outlet to be in the running. I am pleased to say They allowed me to sell them. This was way before AVANA took over. They were REALLY THE BEST.
