DCS Mi-24P "Corkscrew" Maneuver
Hey guys, it's Caprice, I decided to go up solo to demonstrate a maneuver that I have found useful in the Mi-24P. I have dubbed the maneuver the "corkscrew" because I am not sure what it is actually called. It has similarities from what I understand of the "return to target "maneuver" and "popup". If anyone has any idea of the name, please let me know! This maneuver use is situational, and in this video I purposely overused and exaggerated it's use for the purpose of demonstration. I pulled a bit too much a few times and got too slow, like the first example!
The the goal of the maneuver is to convert speed, usually at low level, into altitude giving the pilot and operator time and position to acquire and engage a target. I like using it after an egress to quickly turn on to heading and engage a target. It is important to build enough spacing on your egress to be at standoff range, preferably at a range that you can engage the target, but the target can not engage you. This maneuver is not advised in the range of anti aircraft artillery or surface to air missile weapon employment zones.
Ranges and speeds vary depending on the target. When employing an ATGM, I usually extend at low level to at least 3 to 4 kilometers and my climb and turn slows me down to around 100 kph. For closer range engagements with rockets and gun, I may begin my turn as close as 2 kilometers away from the target and slow only to around 125 to 150 kph in my climbing turn, since there is no requirement for the operator to open the doors.
The speed from 150 to 200 kph is a perfect envelope for effective use of gun, rocket, and ATGM, giving the crew stability and time to effectively engage the target. You also have enough altitude and airspeed to evade if needed.
Many DCS players start engagements in the hind at higher altitudes and at higher speed. when they are required to dip the nose to engage a target, they can very quickly push the helicopter past 300 kph, which shortens the time of engagement and increases closure between you and the target. It is common to see players who engage from these high speeds and altitudes to overfly the target without killing it. This puts the crew at the mercy of enemy firepower. These high speed dives also put the crew at risk of retreating blade stall, which I think we have all done at least once in the hind.
Remember that getting slow and high also puts the crew in a vulnerable state, so once you have engaged, it is important to convert your altitude back into airspeed, descending and accelerating to make yourself a harder target. Flying fast and low limits the time the enemy has to shoot at you. I like a 60 degree angle of bank turn for this break, and my off heading will depend on the situation.
Take a look at the various examples, and let me know what you think of this maneuver, and if you plan on using it in your future sorties. Thanks for watching and reading!

Hind favorite DCS helo. Your Petrovich way more accurate than mine usually is with the ATs.
If im seeing this correctly you're going full rudder in the turn killing pretty much all your speed at the apex of your turn. this is gonna leave you very vulnerable. Speed is life in the Hind
@@ibex1735 yep, I mentioned those vulnerabilities and when it should and shouldn't be used in the description. I pulled too hard and inputted too much rudder in some, and also over exaggerated the maneuver for the demonstration. If you can roll out around 150 Kph at 100-200 meters AGL you have enough potential energy you can descend and get back to 250 Kph in no time.
@@Caprice854 What map / place is this?

My first time materializing on your channel. It is a classic tune for a relaxed ambiance for a game,🤘🏼!
Unfortunately, 11km or 6.5 nm is about the max range with any parameters, IIRC the rocket runs out of battery after about 40 seconds or so, even if it has enough kinetic energy. If you watch the weapons view, you'll see it suddenly start spinning when it runs out of battery power.
yeah its not really a realistic attack, i only really fire them from 5 km and shorter now
IT'S A GAME!!!
@bsdcaprice Sort of a silly hypothetical question for you - Before this Sim released, IRL do you think you could preflight, start-up, briefly hover, let's say 5-10 feet, and then safely land an actual Chinook? Would your experience with this Sim change your answer?
@@rareavis haha I really don't know. If the world was ending and I needed to get a Chinook airborne and out of there, and I had a key, I think I might be able to. I have hundreds of hours flying helis in the sim. I would definitely be doing a lot incorrectly haha.
@@Caprice854 If I tried, I'd leave a nice burning crater in the ground. Didn't know they used an actual key! Rabbits foot keychain? 😁
Love the attention to detail in this game. Your vids have helped shallow out my learning curve. Nine screens, a CMWS, and a digital clock to top it off.
Digital Aeronautical Flight Information File (DAFIF) is indeed on a 28-day cycle. Does the CH-47F CDUs accept 3-letter NAVAID Identifier inputs and 4-letter airfield ICAO identifiers?
Not sure never tried
Regarding the cockpit sounds, I've never worn a military helmet- does it block a lot of the effects you mention? If not, added sounds would be great for immersion.
These are sounds I hear when in a standard set of David and Clark earphones with hearing protection
Well done!
On the D model the APU is fed by the LH Main fuel tank via a booster pump, but I’m not sure if it’s the same thing on the F.
Same thing!
thx
One small note, there is a 4th piece of information that would be present on the SFD as well, a heading tape!
28 days is the cycle of CDU data.
thanks!
Thanks for the insight info, subscribed!
Awesome, thank you!
Lesss goo!
The first time I got onboard a 46, which was my first helo ride ever, after I sat down I felt a light tapping on the top of my Kevlar. "WTF?" I took it off to look and it was dotted with small splotches of oil, which were continuing to drip from the piping overheard. The Crew Chief saw my look of concern, smiled, and told me, "Hey, only be worried if there's NOT oil dripping on you!" 😁

If you have "hear like in helmet" checked the cockpit sounds will be muffled, that may be the reason you didn't hear the sounds on batt pwr?
I don't think they are modeled at this time.
i like how you begin the video by saying you don't have a lot of knowledge of this bird. But to be truthful brother. There's about to be a TON of content put up on youtube by people who have a hell of a lot less knowledge than you!!!!!
Thanks for the kind words excited to share what I know and find answers to what I don't!
Thank you for your feedback we will share it with the team, best regards - Bignewy
Much appreciated!
Make sure to look in the description for corrections to what was said in the video. I still had not finished my morning coffee while making this video.
This mission was really fun to fly as your wingman! Learned a lot of new things. Looking forward for the next one
This channel has a lot of potential! Realistic gameplay!
Quick question, what is your set up, I love the detail.
Cheers thanks it’s 4k, 4080ti, i7 11th gen I think , 64 gb ram, allows me to run DCS at essentially max settings.
When I load into a server, specifically enigmas Cold War server, my srs disconnects on its own. Do you know a fix? Tanks.
nope not sure
Pull up at 100 knots, fire at 30 degrees and you get just and just 11km out of APKWS at sea level.
how long do you wait to laze at that range?
@@Caprice854 Top of ballistic arc is around 25 ish seconds, around 30 the seeker is starting to have good vision of the target area and the rocket won't waste energy on a direct heading to target.
lol nice i might get the kiowa now cuz it lobs like the ka!
I subscribed ! Great shot !
I hit 6000m at low hover. Those missiles lob so well. Launch then wait about 5 seconds then laser. This was a great shot.

Gah! Need to get myself back into the skies with you chaps!
