A visit with Jack Mullin, who brought perfected tape recording to America.
Jack lets us hear the first Bing Crosby radio show recorded on tape, played on the machine that recorded it in 1947.

Original nitrate soundtrack reel I found in the projection room of Harold Lloyd's home theater (really!). Probably from a studio trash bin and brought in by the projectionist for testing sound.

Thank you Richard. This is gold 💛
The world and the USA were so much better back then. The Democrats ruined so much with their left wing BS

44 YEARS LATER...THEY WILL RETURN!
I'm thinkin' I just seen a Bob Clampett appearance! Was he the Badminton instructor?
Yes!
Is it possible you are the Scott I knew at Walt Disney World a hundred years ago? I'm Richard S.
Indeed! You taught me how to load a 35mm magazine and showed me Harold Lloyd movies on your living room wall. Lunch?
@@scottfeldmann I sent you a Facebook friend request, if that's OK.
I am so happy to find this video on Mr. Jack Mullin. His daughter, even I were good friends throughout high school and beyond. Mr. Mullin was such a kind man and very humble. I spent a lot of time at their house when I was growing up. I remember having dinner over there one night and it was Mr.Mullin who showed me how to eat an artichoke for the first time! I’ll always remember him for that. This video is fantastic . I’m so happy I can see him again. Thank you!
I have wonderful memories of the two days taping that interview, and I recently had all of the original uncut video digitized for preservation. I'm sorry the edit is so brief. I also remember his visits to my our house in North Hollywood. He was already a celebrity to me because audio tape recording was a passion since I was about 5 years old. The large turntable he showed in his garage was my gift to him. I hope his collection is where it can be seen and appreciated. Thank you for sharing your memories.

Hey Richard, do you have a copy of 'Banana'? What a cool clip.
One of the cast (Compact Clem) borrowed the film for a party and it never came back. He didn't remember showing it or even the occasion. It was that kind of party.
thank you for this video

A good time was had by all!
My niece also danced right there in the middle, she is now Morgan Elsbeth in Ahsoka and The Mandalorian
Carol and Karen you can't redo 1984 but you can sure try. We need Breakin - they were doing it at the Closing Ceremony of Los Angeles in 1984 amongst the amazing other segments with South Korean garb.
Must say the Acoustics of ABC's World Feed was incredible. Great work in 1984.
They will have a hard time topping the lighting of the flame in 84. for the 2028 Olympics. Rafer Johnson running up those steps was awe inspiring.
I must commend you for the excellent quality of the sound and the video. There are numerous videos on YT but this is the best I've seen. And it's so nice to watch the actual event as if you were in the stands and not having to listen to the constant chatter of the announcers on TV. Thank you!
Thank you for your comment. I hoped others would enjoy the "in-person" experience as much as I have since the day my Beta-HIFI recorded it in the Coliseum, connected to the world feed. Will the 2028 Committee try to top it? I don't think they can.
@@steamboatism Olympic ceremonies since 1984 have become increasingly odd, quirky, inscrutable. It's to be expected in today's culture & politics. But LA 2028 hopefully won't be as eccentric as Paris 2024 was. However, being bizarre (& dumb) appeals to the Hollywood or entertainment crowd in the 21st century
This is the ABC world feed directed by Roger Goodman.

hmpf i can remember watching
I was there, aged 9. I still have the plastic sheet that was under the seats for the audience participation bit at 1:20:00.
Thank you for uploading this, great memories of the best Olympics opening ceremony in my life time followed by London's in 2012!
I just recognized the music they are playing: it is from the Battle of Britain movie and was actually supposed to be celebrating the Luftwaffe
Richard, thanks so much for posting this! I had posted our family's old VHS recording of the band portion a few years ago, but the video and audio quality was not great. Not only is the sound great here, and the video the best I've seen so far, I LOVE that it shows the performance without commentary or commercials - just like those in the stadium would have taken in the show. I was one of the Sousaphone players in the band, having just graduated from USC that Spring. Great memories!
I cant wait for the next olympiad!!! LA 2028
Hardly anyone put their hand over the heart except President Reagan in those days.. and I still don't
I was a volunteer on the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 1984 Olympics. I remember putting out alot of those poles and sandbags on the field for the those ballons. I was in the basketball arena behind the Stadium as that was the staging areas for the competitors, performers and TV crew. 40 years have gone by but I've never forgotten that summer. What a privilege that God gave to me. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.❤
@camellahayes7092 I remember it ALL 2 well. I remember how we got there 4 hours b4 showtime holding down those heavy balloons with those bags. I remember it was an Indian Summer and how the Sun was directly on us and of course we were alphabetical so I was near the front 4 my last name begins with a B. I remember our uniform top was a long sleeved Hoodia with stars and arrows on each side. They wanted us ALL 2b great Ambassadors 4 the visitors, spectators, TV. And mostly 4 the athletes. We were told 2b and set a good example. Recently, my Mom said I received a letter from the UNITED STATES OLYMPIC ORGANIXING COMMITTEE asking if I would be interested in coming back 4 the next Olympics 2b held in L A. This time as a spectator...duh, of course, I said YES. Ironically I m in Paris 4 the current Olympics 4 I work 4 a performer. I used 2 live here in Paris, therefore I know it well. West Hollywood, CA. IS my home. So many great memories and now new ones wrapped with new friendships. Life has been a trip...well worth it ALL.
If you make it to 2028, then it'll be a twice in a lifetime opportunity for you. May I say that I'm completely jealous! Living in the Midwest I'll never get to volunteer or perform on the biggest stage in the universe.
@@julianbonanno4534wow that’s cool! My mom was in the colorguard with the band! I wish they’d invite her back. She always talks do highly of the experience. I think it was one of the best things she’s ever done! Makes me want to be apart of it!
So much better than a lot of that garbage in Paris
It's been 40 years since the 1984 Summer Olympics began.
As I watch this, it is 40 years to the day (7/28/24) that these ceremonies took place. I didn't get to watch them live as I was in Basic Training at Fort Sill, OK at the time.

Sometimes things that happen in our lives aren't our fault at all.
Probably my favorite memory, all those rehearsals in the week culminating in the Olympic Band performance for opening and closing ceremonies.
So much fantastic recording history. I hope all that equipment has been preserved.
After his death, I heard that his collection went to--I think--Minnesota, perhaps because of his career with 3M.
