SD Cards Sux!!! Rebuilding my Gitlab server
มุมมอง 594 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
SD cards are ok to test out a small board computer, but by no means should you use it as your production server media. Unless you have a means to backup the the data. I should know better. Seriously. Plus, if it's going to be production, do have it as a single point of failure. Anyway, as part of my home lab rebuild. I am installing GitLab on ArgonOne case that I have M.2 NVMe Expansion USB boa...

I got everything I need for my DeskPi RackMate upgrade, but before I can place everything into it, I wanted to upgrade my storage to something that made sense for my 10' Rack. Luckily, with Amazon, you can use Affirm to make large purchases. Which is what I chose to use so that I could finish this project. Since Inland (Microcenter) has a store on Amazon, I purchased three more of the QN450 2TB...

I'm still rebuilding my home lab. I've moved from the main rack to the Deskpi Rackmate T-1 10" rack. I got set up for Southeast Linux Fest, but I was lacking any type of storage. I have the Argon EON, but I wanted something that could be placed in the rack. Luckily, CWWK reached out to me. I got excited and replied that I'd love to review some of their items, without really taking the time to s...
Proxmox Datacenter Manager Alpha Release
มุมมอง 1.3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Proxmox has release the alpha to the Datacenter Manager, something that admin like myself have been wanting for a long time. Here is the link to the forum forum.proxmox.com/threads/proxmox-datacenter-manager-first-alpha-release.159323/ Setup took less than couple of minutes. Adding a remote node is simple. This video show me adding three of my Proxmox servers.

I know its too late for this comment, but I usually make an ISO of my SSD card right after it has been configure for just this reason. Has worked out well for me in the past.
Advise is never too late. I am doing that to my WordPress server as we speak.
any progress on getting the third band to associate? i still haven’t
Try getting the 6Ghz working.
the R4 ofcourse. My line is already 1GE and will only get faster in the future. also, the R4 has a WiFi7 expansion board I can add when the needs arises.
Is it possible for you to do a tutorial on how to get EMULEC on the Banana Pi M5?
Read Speed up to 5,000MBps Write Speed up to 4,000MBps
Hello, so by turning ON Dip switch #4 I would be able to boot off the SD card? Even if I have an emmc? Thank you :)
Could it works with gpi case2?
Have you tried any of the linux images they provide? If so, how do you access it via the terminal?
opkg has been replaced with apk apk update apk upgrade apk add luci
Looks great, in the image, but what about DWPD ?
Anyone know if the Orange Pi CM boards work in the 6C?
The OrangePi CM4 does work on it.
We have about 4" here in Marietta GA Right now lol 😮
Would, you are west of me.
I don't like the design of the case and the antennas so close together. I think it would be nice if they made a trash can-style case and internal antennas.
Maybe you should do a mockup, show Banana-Pi what you recommend.
@@terrorpup I wouldn't know how to do that. I also don't have the technical know-how for a proper antenna design. I also thought it might be a good idea to cool the top part, like the CPU, memory and such, and the bottom part, the wireless radios.
The antennas are very close together.
Thank god it’s not a boring Unifi stack.
Too poor for UniFi hardware. LOL. I hast stated this before, 70% of my hardware was donated. I am lucky for that. I wish I hate the gear that others get to play with, but I am happy to be able to do what I can. With the gear I have.
Awesome setup and adorable Beagle! Just a quick question. On one of the servers you stated you can manage vlans on it? Just curious what software are you running on it that allows you to manage the vlans?
You can do VLANs on any Linux machine.
@ yeh no shit.
Hate to say it spread sheet. On the switch side, I am luck to have small business Cisco Switches that I can assign vlans to port. I am looking for something that can do L3 switching. Any recommendations?
Yep, VLAN tagging. I have done it at work, at home, a few iptables rules.
Nice, where is the video?
Well, I have a blog I wrote to show how to find it. uglyscale.press/2023/10/01/banana-pi-bpi-p2-pro-setup/
great video. performance wise passing the HBA controller would have been faster. Also in my experience and not listening to a lot of people and youtubers it does reduce random errors in trunas by passing the hba controller to the VM. Keep up the great content .
@geekcruz thank you, I am learning to do the hardware pass thru. That is good to know.
I followed every step but fan not spinning. What's wrong
THANK YOU! i've been trying to set mine up for a few days now, and the reminder to turn power on for the NIC was very helpful🙃
can you test the HDMI input capability in a video? I am considering to buy one unit. By the way ,thanks for uploading
Great stuff man. Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
that dog looks horrified by that noise
Thank you for the video. What do you used the Dell R320 for? In the UK, I can get one for £50 and I’m wondering whether it’s worth buying one to tinker with and learn how they work, while trying Proxmox / TrueNAS out on them.
your dog has wonderful eyes!
I just build a small 10" rack mountable media server / NAS with N305 and TrueNAS with idea of having it silent and fanless. But so far, I added one silent Noctua case fan that kicks in only if needed. Just in case. Running 4 SSDs in RAIDz1, 32 GB of RAM... ElectricEel-24.10.1... So far all good. Idle power consumption around ~16W even with some docker containers and one Linux VM running. Pretty good for a mini home lab.
Yeah, I love it. Deskpi is going to come out with a new T-0 that have the size of the T-1. I want to setup a mobile lab so that I can take it to shows and user groups. The main reason for me doing the DeckPi Rackmate T-1 is heat. I live in Georgia. In the past when I would have my servers on, my office even with a fan and AC would get over 90 F degrees (About 32C). I couldn't work there. Now with the 10" Rack, the office is bearable, and I can cont' to learn. The whole reason I have my home lab.
@@terrorpup Similar here. I like it quiet and passive cooled (it lives in my bedroom) and at the same time it's low power so it's cheap to run it 24/7. I can not handle when it's warm, in general. Plus learning how to configure and use all the tools. I do use Linux for more than 2 decades, but recently I started with Unraid and now TrueNAS. Next I want to explore ProxMox and clustering.
Thank you.
I am glad you liked it, you are welcome.
Any TH-cam video that starts with cute dogs gets an immediate upvote from me.
I think I'm probably in the minority here, but I've never really understood the appeal of the super inefficient server machines. I'm using two Xeon E3-1245 v6 machines, which is from the Kaby Lake era. They idle at about 60 watts with 8 HDDs spun up. For anything requiring more cores and RAM, the gen 2 or gen 3 Epyc systems would make more sense to me and still be a lot more effecient. Anyways, to each their own. Happy homelabbing.
If I had the funds. I replace everything with a nice tower with AMD Threadripper max outed with cores, shortages, and memory. Run virts and containers. I am lucky that these were giving to me. Beggars can't be choosy.
Fascinating build. What's your storage size for this beast? Is it primarily going to be used as a plex server + adobe suite working base?
Total across the two servers, and the four USB drives, 50TB. It was used for Plex, but I have lost things over the years. I just don't have the time to rip my stuff anymore. In the past it was so my kids could watch their stuff.
First time ever someone acknowledges that it's summer for us in the southern hemisphere!
How do you connect the SSD HAT on top of the Rock 5A? Iirc, the Rock 5A doesn't have PCIe connector.
The Rock 5A has M.2 E Key Slot adn there is NVME Hat from Raxda that work with it, but you will not be able to have Wifi. Unless you use a USB Wifi.
clicked on video expecting servers got a video with servers and doggos 10/10 channel
Looks great, I needed to rename my manager, so I deleted the VM, when I rebuilt it, the old cert still exists, so it wont let me complete the installation...working on it now. Figured it out, you have to delete the cert from Proxmox...It reinstalled after that.
How are the thermals with just the passive heatsinks and the metal case?
There is a fan for the R3 you can buy. Right now, yes only heatsinks and thermals pads. It's only over heat once but that more because my office got over 90+ F.
@terrorpup Oh okay, I see. I ended up going with the R4 because I believe the case allows for better airflow (and because of Wi-Fi 7 and it should be better than the R3 in terms of performance).
Thank you for this video. Also, how do you only have 818 subscribers?
Not sure. I am happy to have that many. I love to have more, but I also love doing my long videos. I want people to learn and understand.
I’d invest in one of those sound proof racks
I had a quart height rack with walls, sounded like a jet engine. I need that noise, working 20 years in Datacenter, that is my white noise. Trust me, I have woken from a dead sleep because the power went out and I don't hear my servers.
@@terrorpup at least it was not for ups beeping
Good stuff man
Very cool man!! I need to get rid of my r610s in favor of something capable of esxi8, even with everything going on w/ vmware it still feels more premium than the alt hypervisors and more likely to encounter them at a job than even AHV. Any bottle-necking you're seeing 'virtualizing' trunas to physical storage?
Is ESXi8 free? I thought Broadcom killed the free version. I use to use libvirtd, but I want something that give me a GUI. I tried Wok/Cherry with no luck. Proxmox fill that need. I know some don't like it because of LXC, but I kinda like LXC. Nothing stop anyone from setting up a virtual guest to run docker on.
@terrorpup no it's not free, just use a k-e-y-g-e-n lol
i take it you dont understand the hardware you have nor do you know what the hell youre doing. just leave the hobby
good video except the angle!
Thank you. Yes, only place on my desk I could use my phone. I am looking for a look camera that I can use. I used my phone because my normal setup is three webcams. With Webcams, you can't do zooms. WHICH SUX!
Whats it for?
I wanted to use Zima Board to replace the Dell Optiplex 755, it's. If you use pfSense 2.7 so you don't need pci ethernet.
Hey so did you find out if they are cross compatible?
Yes, I am using across, Odroid, Indroid, and Orange Pi.
@@terrorpup sweet I wonder how much more cost effective would it be to just solder a chip directly
For L3 switches that doesn't cost an arm and a leg AND you get all the features at no extra cost, have a look at Mikrotik.
You can't expect a rather old system to handle booting from NVMe. I own a couple of Supermicro MBs and one of their 4U 16 HDD rack mount chassis. I have TrueNAS running on both and have mirrored ZFS boot disk setup on both.
I was hopefully, but that's why I home lab. To learn what I can and can not do. I owned four. The one you see, I took a broken one and upgrade this one. Good Luck with your TrueNAS, I love it. Expect the latest install Scale feels like Core. A step back.
I run TPlink Omada on im homelab and in a few of the small business that i support and you cant beat them for price and performance
I have never heard of them, will look into them. Thanks.
@@terrorpupTplink is under surveillance right now from the US that they might have a back door on all there equipment which there owned by china just in case you haven’t heard it’s actually almost to the point there trying to ban there products.
Awful cable management 😮😮
Believe or not, it much nicer.
Not gonna lie.... i came for the beagle.
Thank you, I have two.
