Nurse Quits Job, Becomes Writer, Regains Sanity with Shelly Umstot
Shelly Umstot brashly quit her nursing job, took an RN2writer course, and now writes full-time for a living. But she’s no overnight sensation. Shelly’s been working hard since 2021 to level up her income - while enjoying the ability to spend time with her grandkids because she’s not tied to the clock anymore. Her story’s an inspiration to nurses everywhere.
Shelly Umstot is a freelance health content writer who lives in northeast Ohio. She has a BSN and has been an RN for over 35 years. Her specialties throughout her career included orthopedics, physical rehabilitation, and home healthcare. Her passion is educating those with questions and concerns regarding health issues and helping them obtain and maintain optimal health.
In October 2021, she started Umstot Content for Health, LLC, a content writing business specializing in the healthcare space for B2B and B2C. Her first “toe-dipping” into the freelance world came when she took the RN2Writer course in June of the same year. She is a certified SEO copywriter and has soaked up many things related to content writing.
She’s written blogs and articles for Finfrock Marketing, Momcozy, Siege Media, and Infiuss Health, and she wrote an article for the Arthritis Foundation about her personal experience as a total knee replacement patient. Other deliverables she has written include email chains for a service company, CEU education for nurses, and materials for an app called Dynamic Health that provides instruction at the bedside for procedures nurses may need to review before doing.
Her first loves are her faith, family, and friends. She and her husband have been married for 33 years. They have two sons and a daughter-in-law, who is also a nurse. Shelly’s two energetic and beautiful granddaughters genuinely have her heart (don’t tell the others)! She travels frequently back to western Maryland, where she and her husband grew up. Most of their extended family still lives there.

    Thank you, ladies, for this wonderfully rich conversation. I took a leave from my medical career of over twenty years to move back into my childhood home to be with my terminally ill father during his last months of life; four months turned into 16 months. That precious time with Dad forever changed me. I never returned to my career, yet the "DNA" of my time as a clinician will always run through me. Watching this brought tears to my eyes. Something clicked. Finally, I am ready to embrace writing!

    That's so encouraging that you say you have your credentials and your bedside nursing even if you don't have your freelance writer experience yet. Because I know I am not a good writer or typer, but you're right that bedside experience for a few decades and different facilities has to count for something. I also feel very motivated by how you say the lifestyle is just lounging around and doing what you want and not having to show up. I know it's not exactly like that but it is compared to having to show up 🙂. I'm trying to get the business aspect set up in my space for this writing but at the same time I also want to try case management and would still have to show up but at least I wouldn't be chained to the bedside and answering call lights.

    Thoroughly enjoyed listening to you ladies talk about your professional and personal lives, not only as it relates to writing but the impetus for your writing. Hearing about how topics came to mind from what was going on in Jennifer's life to actual articles she then used to pitch to clients, sounds like someone who is very impassioned about her writing. I really like hearing that. It isn't really about the paycheck (although a paycheck is certainly a nice incentive). Quite often, it's about having experienced something personally or professionally then researching the topic for some solution or solutions, and then sharing it to help someone else. Nurses are altruistic by nature. I don't think anyone would enter this field of writing for just the $$. Thanks for the chuckle in the very beginning, Beth, where you mention about your cue cards -- "all the big name hosts do that". Laughed out loud on that :)

    I think that as capitalism continues to degrade healthcare into wealthcare, the importance of naming an advocate for hospital stays or advice on how to navigate the maze without one is an important new trend that we can expect to see more of in the very near future as well. Even writing about the general degradation of our hospitals is crucial, most lay people don't realize what state our facilities are in these days but nurses do!

    Doesn't AI threaten this type of work for humans?

    • @RN2writer
      @RN2writer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      AI is going to change the writing industry, as a whole - just as the World Wide Web did, social media did, content mills/farms did, etc. But it’s unlikely to put human writers out of business, especially in health writing, because our clients don’t hire us only for our writing ability but for our healthcare experiences. And no AI has ever cared for patients, heard their concerns, solved problems behind the scenes. That’s the bottom line.

      I can understand viewing it that way. Most businesses, in fact, start the first year with a loss. Our founder, Elizabeth Hanes, did. But you're overlooking the fact this also is a business deduction. There's nothing wrong about starting with a financial loss the first year in business if it helps set you up for long-term success. 🙂

  • @pirateslife4me
    @pirateslife4me 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What I'm curious about is how much time/bandwidth Ruth is actually willing to devote to overlapping clients as she considers leveling up. If she's test driving new clients periodically, it's essentially agreeing to take on a fourth client ny default. I almost think marketing for her would look like continuing to maintain an attractive LinkedIn page and be extremely discriminating about which clients she even wants to test drive.

    I'm so glad you sent me the email with the TH-cam clip in it because I didn't think of looking there to see some of these. And now that I have some Wi-Fi, I'm binge watching a few of these and I definitely find it intriguing, especially anything that doesn't involve me having to answer a frivolous call light or sending me unaware, into a room of a patient they just made angry and I'm not even their nurse. I like this content because, and I find it intriguing because I am bad with time management on the floor and always leaving late and trying to do too much. To sum it up, I had one patient tell me after I introduced the new nurse coming on, that is very well quaffed, says the right things, smiles and calls you baby all the things I don't seem to be like have flow unless I'm like really of the same mind with the patient I'm not good at being fake, anyway that patient said to me when I went back to do something else, said, I can already tell I'm not going to have the same kind of care today.

      So sorry to hear what you're going through. It's unfortunate how often we hear tales like this from nurses (and all types of health pros, really). The situation isn't good. But we're so glad you find value in our biweekly newsletter and especially the links to the YT videos! That is awesome. Thank you for the kind words. ~Beth

    I like how cerebral this job and the conversation is. I feel like the hospital or nursing home job after a few decades has just become a series of interruptions, complaints and demands. Like a handmaiden enabler. I think in one of the pieces, mentioned about how those jobs are really not in favor of the worker and their health and their sanity. I don't know how well I can do this but I'm interested in checking it out I'm still reading the ebook that I just got. My only thought on this financial aspect is if I go from writing for free until I get the skills and prove myself shouldn't I be taking some of these low-ball jobs initially to cut my teeth on?

      Hi Margaret! So glad you found this episode engaging. Isn't Steve great?? To answer your question, NO, you should not take on "lowball" gigs to cut your teeth. I can understand why people think that way, but in reality it's a trap. Here's an episode I recorded on why you shouldn't write for free, and the reasons also apply to why you shouldn't write for cheap. :-) Enjoy! ~Beth th-cam.com/video/EtQXKjRyG5U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9cddb2F1qcazI_86

    curious on your thoughts of a care aide having enough credentials to be accepted as a nurse writer

      Great question! And...here's the thing... [glances around and whispers]: Anyone with any healthcare background at all has a competitive advantage as a health writer. You don't have to be a nurse at all! That's because the vast majority of health writers have no healthcare background - they're usually trained journalists or simply people who decided to become freelance writers. So, your extra experience would make you very desirable to clients! ~Beth
