Brilliant! Thanks...
No ventilation? Just asking ...
We have ventilation in the darkroom but not in the main studio since we don't work with any chemicals in the shop. The lithography materials we used for our low toxic stone litho process we used outside in the summer since we thought it would be too smelly for our shop.
Lithography -An Artists Guide by Ade/Turnbull...supplied by Lemonade Litho in Bristol suggests you can skip the roisin and just use french chalk/talc....I have tried but messed up in another part of the process so am not 100%
Very interesting. We will look that book up and give it a try. Thanks for sharing this.
This is fantastic. I quit etching when I got a rare type of cancer that’s from chemical exposure. It probably wasn’t from the chemicals involved in the etching process, but etching just didn’t feel safe anymore. Thank you for sharing this. And by the way, the prints look great. I love the choice of the dark blue especially. That piece is…wow.
I am so sorry to hear that you had cancer. I hope that you are doing ok now. I can completely understand wanting to pull away from any art creation process that involves chemicals. Thank you for sharing and thank you for your kind comments about the prints! We are always trying to find ways to make our shop as safe as possible. We have had several artists work at our studio because they want (or need) to move away from the traditional processes.
Do you have a conclusion for the scumming and spreading on the last plates? Do you think the syrup actually helped with the earlier layers?
I think that the scumming might have had to do with the viscosity of the ink. The different colours had different viscosities and I should have adjusted to make sure the stiffness was correct. Looking back on the edition size and the quality of the line, compared to previous prints in past exploration, I would say that the syrup seemed to be doing something. We are hoping to make another edition and film it over the winter.
the colors are so vibrant obsessed
Thanks so much! I loved using a riso colour palette. Also, Zea Mays collaborated with Hanco to create a wonderful transparent etching ink which also helped in creating the blends 💛
Not sure if you mentioned it in the video, but what kind of inks are you using? Water based, never seen screen printing inks in the tubes you were using. Thanks for the thorough video
Watched the full vid, and saw you mentioned waterbase, still curious what kind? Thanks
Thanks for the question. We are using Tri Art Printing ink. We have links to them on our website if you want to check them out. They are a relatively local (to us) acrylic paint and ink maker. They are water based inks.
Love tbe amount of research you have on this process
Thanks so much! We really enjoyed diving deep into this process. Looking forward to exploring it even more. Have you tried kitchen litho?
Thank you for your work!
Thanks! We hope it was helpful :D
I’m not young but I appreciate the advice!
We're not young either 😀 but the advice is great for anyone at any age.
Thanks for doing such a comprehensive experiment, appreciate it.
So glad it was helpful. We really love doing research like this, so it was a pleasure!
Great tour. tHanks for posting. The space looks super
Thanks so much 😀
Everything has a place and everything in its place. Nice work. I also do pick up 5. You just pick up a thing put it where it should be and repeat for 5 minutes.
Having a dedicated space for everything is a shop game changer for sure. I love the pick up five idea (I should start applying that to my painting studio).
Final print came out amazing! Watched the full video & shared it with a friend who's exploring more non toxic approaches to printmaking. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much! If your friend ever has any questions tell them we're happy help, feel free to reach out.
Just love this video about your time here with us and the work you made here. We loved every minute of your time here! Just to clarify one thing - BIG ground is an ink based ground, it's not an acrylic. Keep on etching - you make it look so good!
We loved it too! Thanks for that clarification ❤️ (that’s why I shared a link to Andrew Baldwin’s video explaining the ground because I knew I would mix something up about it ☺️)
Very nice work, great
Thanks 😀 I really loved how this print turned out (it's even more fun in it's pop-up version).
@@sparkboxstudio pop-up 🤩 what kind of ink you use for it ?
We used Tri-Art printmaking ink and screen printing base (here's a link: bit.ly/3Tttfgg) 😀
Dang I miss you guys and that studio! Love this lesson.
So glad you loved the video! We miss you too!!
This is a fantastic body of research. I am in a similar position with regards to Kitchen Litho, making notes and working back and forth between methods used by other artists. I have been mixing workflows with some success and some failures. This video has been immensely helpful.
So glad this video was helpful. The second one we posted I walked through making an edition. It worked pretty well. I tried to keep notice of what was causing issues. If you haven't watched that one you might also find it helpful. I got an edition of 20 and it was a five colour print.
Excellent video, thanks! A most beautiful printmaking studio. Best of luck on your creations and making new connections with other artists there.
Thanks so much! It is a truly beautiful print studio. The next video will show the work we made and the processes.
awesome space! It looks like you will make a lot of great work there!
It is such an awesome space! We're looking forward to posting the next video showing the prints we made. We learned so much!
I really like your set up for screen printing. My screen printing setup is literally an empty room in a basement so I am starting from scratch in a place where I don't have personal transportation and am limited to lumber and funds am I am international. Currently am the caregiver of my daughter so it will be really difficult to say carry a table to our house whilst also pushing a stroller. I wish I could afford your patreon right now. Any advice or help?
Thanks for your comment and your kind words about our shop. Sounds like you are working hard to make printmaking happen in your home, which is awesome, congrats on that! We've never had a truck so we've had our local Home Hardware delivery materials to our shop in order to build. That could help with the materials transportation challenge. If you ever have more questions feel free to email us 😀
Brilliant design of your studio space...great DIY and scrappyness...perfection !!
Thanks so much! We love a scrappy DIY!
That’s beautiful ❤
Thanks 💛
Currently in an internship helping a director start his immersive installation project. This was good insight.
Sounds like a great internship. Hope the installation goes well!
Amazing! I love it all so much but am also very jelly about all your space and how great you’ve made it! Well done ! ❤
Awe thanks! We are pretty in love with and grateful for our studio 💛
this was very helpful! what is the dimensions of your studio?
So glad you found this helpful. The studio is roughly 22 ft x 36 ft.
Did you have gum arabic in the water you were using to sponge the plate before each inking? If not, that might explain the scumming and line-filling that was happening.
Great insight and question. I did have gum arabic in the water I was using for sponging. It was also mixed with some critic acid. I might have needed more than I put in (it was less than half a shot glass). Totally something to keep in mind and pay more close attention to next time though because you're right that it does help with the scumming issue.
This was a really great demonstration of this technique. I’m excited to try it! Thank you. 😍
Thanks so much! We are excited to work on some more of these prints and really figure out even more. Hope you find success with it!
excellent explanation 😍😍😍😍😍😍
beautiful your work - i have a questions for you ...what is the best ink for print?
Thanks so much for your comments 💛 For this edition we used VanSon Rubber based inks with no modifiers. When we were working with the black and white prints I think we were using the VanSon Rubber based inks as well as Graphic Chemical Lithography ink. We tried using Akua inks but had no luck (to be fair they are intaglio inks so not made for this process).
❤
What a dream space omg I’m barely starting my printmaking journey with linoleum printing but wow hope to work in a space like this one day :)) best of wishes in all of your printmaking endeavors from Arizona ❤️❤️
Thanks so much! We do feel very lucky to have this space. That's exciting that you're starting your printmaking journey. Lino is a great place to start - affordable and easy to print by hand if necessary!
Love watching your videos! This looks like a huge undertaking. Divi rocks for website building.
Thanks Gerry! We totally agree, we have been using Divi for awhile now and really like it.
That flower in Angelines! Such gorgeous work!
Thanks Lindsey. The mural at Angeline's makes me so happy! 💛💛
Luv that you got outside to show your work in Bloomfield. I didn't know there were so many there. I have stopped to enjoy your silo mural. Next time I'm in Bloomy I'll visit your other work. It would be cool for you to visit the Indigenous Seed Bank in Tyendinaga and get inspired by the plants they treasure there. Christy and Kyle your work is so inspiring. Thank you sharing all your art adventures and knowledge. It's Cecilia
Thanks so much for this and for the info about the Indigenous Seed Bank! We will totally check that out.
I love the numbered doors soooo much! I think my favourite though is the first mural (the cut out on the front brick house). It looks super organic and like the fairytale of my dreams!
Thanks so much Kate! The cut outs were so fun. Such a lot of extra prep but a great solution for that beautiful brick. We hope you're doing well! 💛
Great video here. I enjoyed and learned a lot from it.
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you found it helpful 😀
This is absolutely fascinating! Thank you, Chrissy, for sharing your artistic journey and your creative process. Paul Boultbee
💛 Thanks Paul! I'm hoping to get back into the painting studio this summer to continue working on this series of work. I am wanting to explore some new materials as well. Hope you have been finding time to paint too!
Man this space is amazing! Love all the old looking presses. It’s so cool how although you have all those large presses and so many desks the space open and inviting.
Thanks so much! That means a lot. We're so glad that you can sense the openness, it's something we really care about in the space.
very cool!
If you would like, i could e-mail you the plans i used to build my vacuum table, it works perfectly
I'd love for you to do a tutorial on your color seps, I got back into screen printing recently and that's really the biggest thing I never mastered. Awesome video man
Thanks! Would love to talk more about colour. Anything in particular? Would love to hear more about your vacuum table. It is something we have considered building but never tried.
@@sparkboxstudioyou might've talked about it but was limited on space. Mine is 24x36 but the plans can be modified and are pretty much universal (think the OG plan was for an 18x24 ) but I can email the plan i used when get to my laptop. As far as color seps, just like a short tutorial on your process. The way you have your seps set up seems a lot more intuitive and organized
Love the video vibe and the colour palette….reminds me of a Wes Anderson film! The claw machine you have is the coolest thing I have ever seen! Your discourse on how to become a teacher is right on target….don’t know who in their right mind would ever want to be a high school teacher? I heard one time way back that some kid showed up for his major IntegratedARTS Showcase presentation wearing a suit made out of duct tape? I mean who does that? I hope you still have that! 😂
So great to hear from you! I was trying to find the duct tape suit before I wrote back, but haven't lucked out so far. Hilarious that you remember that 🤣. To give folks context: In my last year(s) of high school I got a chance to be in a special focus program called ‘integrated arts’. It was a wonderful program that allowed students to spend a full semester focused on an art project with an exhibition at the end. During that exhibition, I sported the most fantastic 3 piece duct tape suit (well, as fantastic as my teen-self could make), complete with shoes, top hat and cane.
Wow! I’m thinking of opening a studio next year. What’s your square footage?
That's awesome! Our shop is about 1,000 square feet.
Fab video.
thanks so much ❤️
As someone who's also had the pleasure of spending time with, creating and getting to know David, this is absolutely beautiful and I can't help but sit here smiling ear to ear. I understand why you were moved to make this - he'll always be one of my favourite humans :)
Thanks so much for this lovely comment. David is fantastic and it was a true pleasure having him stay with us to create this body of work. ❤️
Yes, it does. Sure maybe one rejection could be because of bias. But if there is a pattern of rejection it means your art just isn't good enough. In other words it sucks.
I discovered this word by enhancing my statement in using AI. I possess skills in like traditional illustration, building blueprints, tech-savvy, making origami, calligraphy, photography, contemporary poetry, cooking, bodybuilding for hobby, and running household chores.
This is SO helpful! And I adore your presentation style - can't wait to binge watch your other vids - after I complete my art residency applications!
Yeah! So happy you found this helpful. And congrats on putting together residency applications. Hope you get to head some where great to make some new work.
This is helpful!
That’s great, so glad to hear you found it helpful 😀
