Well done - go on!
What a lovely tribute to Harris Chings work. Every painting of his is absolutely magnificent, you feel you could actually hold every bird or animal he painted and feel its heart beating. Beautiful❤
thank you great work
How do you decide which color to put next to each other in the broken color technique?
Thank you for this! I am a hobby painter, and I love Payne`s work. Your video evokes a rich artistic life of discovery and fulfillment. Your narration was thoughtful and low-key, very enjoyable.
Thank you. Appreciate the kind words
Он прекрасный художник. Спасибо Вам большое.
I don't know if you would see this comment? I appreciate your effort on trying to re-do Steve Hanks 's master piece!
Thank you

I, too, have tried to repaint and learn Steve Hanks paintings. They are quite a challenge and tend to require enormous attention to detail. I have not tried the paintings on cold press paper. My attempts were all on hot press paper, working some wet on wet for skin tones. (I worked a lot wetter for the skin tones than you did, then added a little dryer layers. I might even try a stencil brush. I absolutely love his paintings and the transparency of his colors! For the background I wonder if he poured it to make the transitions smoother. I’d like to know how and where he uses masking fluid because I cannot work with it well for the whites in the hair.
Great questions. I also wonder about these and only can look at his paintings, experiment and guess. Good luck on your pursuit.
Henry I think your art piece is wonderful. I love the hat so well done and also I’m so happy that you’re doing this memory for the son and every time he looks at it he’ll always remember his bond with his dad. It just warms my heart. thank you for everything you just taught us on broken Color I appreciate it.
Thank you Vickie for the kind words.
Well done❤❤❤
Thank you
Thank you for telling usnabout him, what a great artist!
Great video I'm a fan 😀

Just Beautiful!
Wow wonderful Artistik looks
Artist remembers his wonderful discovery and experience
Love this! Great camera work.
Thank you very much for the demonstration. I might try it.
I love his work the attention to detail is amazing. I have a limited edition kestrel on a sack 123/850 signed by Raymond Harris Ching. Bought from THE TRYON GALLERY LTD would like to know the value of it.
That is a great one. Not sure the worth. The wildlife art market was flooded with prints. That is a small edition. Interesting to know the value of Ray's stuff. I'd love to own an original
Wonderful demonstration Thanks
Thank you!
Great vid!
thanks Michael
Very interesting vlog.
thank you
Good and beautiful way of living. Phisical culture, nature and art together.... and singing..... A great philosophie of living. Congratulations from Salamanca (Spain).
Thank you
i think he went off the rails with those silly allegorical paintings he started doing - among other subject matter - but as a bird painter he's an unparalleled genius.
unfortunately, i agree. I would love for someone to do an in depth interview with him. I talked to Graem Stevens years ago at Colour in Your Life. He said he knew Ray and would try to interview him but so far, nothing
@@henrywilliamriffeii7425 oh hi HWR - thanks for your reply. i'm a painter living and working in toronto and i used to be a hard core bird painter when i was young. when i first saw his work - in that big slip cased book "the bird paintings" - i was so overwhelmed i almost quit painting! truly a superhuman talent - and insanely prolific. cheers!
@@delacroix2007 then you surely know Bateman, who to me is the greatest Wild Life painter but his birds looked plastic compared to Ray's. So don't let it get you down. 🙂
@@henrywilliamriffeii7425 yes bateman was the king in the 70' and 80's but his work has not stood the test of time. there's another canadian animal painter named george mclean who (in my opinion) shares with ching the position of greatest animal painter of his (their) generation. maclean and ching are friends and he has done a lot to promote ching's work in north america. check him out if you haven't heard of him, much more of an environmental animal painter - in the sense that the animal's environment plays as important a role in his work as the animal itself.
@@delacroix2007 Oh yes, I know McLean. I like his art but still think overall Bateman is tops. His compositions are just spot on. and his ideas. As you mentioned, Ray's are a bit bizarre.
Awesome video!
Great tip on lighting waves at 4:00.
Too, i love him, as, do you. Gregg Oreo long Beach Ca

Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching
Love it so much 💖
Hi thanks for this video. Very interesting. One thing that is very rarely discussed and hard to understand is how to choose the différents colors and how they interact with each other to create interesting effects. Why put this color close to this one instead of another... Any thought on that? I'm having a hard time finding I formation explaininh about that. Thanks again!
Great question, worthy of a video in answer. I am not formally trained, self taught only. My answers and ideas are what I would do or what I think or believe, not necessarily the gospel. I too have wondered this same thing and all I could come up with and the way I approach it is like this: 1) OBSERVATION. Squint down, open your eyes wide, don't just look but see. Is it cooler here, warmer there? Brings us to 2) PRELIMINARY WORK: Do small sketches in color and experiment. Bend that local color you are using to each primary, keeping it all the same value. 3) STUDY THE MASTERS: Find an artist you love who uses this technique or one that paints a similar subject you are painting and see how they handled it. 4) PHOTOSHOP: If you are using reference images open them in a software like Photoshop and go to Images > Posterize and move the slider around and see if it can give you hints. I hope this helps and thank you for the question Adrien. - Henry
@@henrywilliamriffeii7425 great advices, thanks. I liked your video a lot, keep up this excellent work. Love your painting! I will try poterizing!
By the way I agree with others that your care for pedagogical explaination makes your video the best I found on TH-cam on broken color!
@@adriengirard3130 thank you Adrien. Hope your paintings go well.
Thank you for this history.
