We’ve set up a capstan phasing device on the MADE Lathe’s curvilinear slide so we could add a twist to the story automatically. The curvilinear slide had a mechanical auto feed with auto stops so why not add some automatic phasing?

This pattern is a modified version of one of the patterns that Charles Plumier had in his classic book, “The Art of the Turner.” While it can be accomplished in several ways, perhaps the most efficient is pumping on a rose engine with a drilling frame. Here the MADE Lathe demonstrates is well, from start to finish, with all the different adjustments demonstrated.

Christian put Peter Gerstel’s bell crank pumping mechanism to the test in conjunction with the MADE Lathe Rose Engine slide rest on automatic feed. The results were interesting. The lathe was running fully automatic completely mechanical.

This shows a barleycorn being ornamentally "turned" on a Bridgeport milling machine with a boring head and a 10" Walter rotary table. The boring bar was ground to a 120 degree angle. The bowl was hollowed with the boring head, and then the barleycorn was formed by making 360 cuts into an 18" piece of Swiss Pear wood.

This video takes you through the rudiments of ornamental turning on the rose engine in two minutes. Starting with plain turning the blank on a metal lathe it moves to the rose engine where both pumping and rocking are used in conjunction with the most used cutting frames to create a classically formed wine bottle stopper.
