SOLAR-POWERED ELECTRIC CAMPER VAN, REDFOO BUILD PART 3, FIRST TEST DRIVE!
In this video, we go through all the components we're using in this EV conversion, including the Tesla Model 3 battery packs, controllers, battery management system, solar panels, and more. We take you along for our first test drive and the days leading up to our journey in this vehicle from Wisconsin to California. This is in a fully electric, solar van we are building for the artist Redfoo (formerly of the band LMFAO).

    LiFePo4 batteries are great, only issue is probably the energy density; they're much safer than something like Tesla's Lithium Cobalt, but they hold way less energy per kilo. Still, if i were building an EV RV I'd use that chemistry. They are not nearly as explosive and don't require as much heating or cooling, either. You can even buy prismatic packs that are 3.2 volts and, say, 300 Ah; build them into compressing steel boxes perhaps and put enough of those in to reach some hundreds of volts and tons of watt hours and you'd have a great battery that can do 3000 cycles or more. I'd love something this size with slideouts for more living space and built on that 4x4 chassis. 4x4 to me is more about always knowing that getting stuck would require some serious screw-ups - and of course in snowy conditions it's brilliant. Some extra ground clearance wouldn't hurt either. Unfortunately my wallet can't come close to supporting that, and either way I'm not even in America. But great builds for sure, hope you do something great with the 4x4.

    Can you please share the price you are charging for this setup, including the cost of the van? The idea is great but a Chevy Brightdrop Zevo 600 costs about $65,000 and can go 275 miles but has been shown that it can go up to 300 miles on a charge.

    • @skyak4493
      @skyak4493 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      DIY can’t hold a candle to mass produced commercial vehicle. What is the incentive to report cost? Brightdrop is a great platform, but tell us what you pay when you have one. The next issue is power access. GM isn’t allowing full access to their battery so you will need a house bank to supplement the kw or so they give. You do know there is a guy offering customizable RVs based on Zevo ($190k) in Detroit, right?

    can we add portable foldable vertical wind turbine...........only use when camp/stop

    • @kevinjpluck
      @kevinjpluck 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sadly not worth it. I looked around for one myself, for a 1.2m diameter turbine you need 30kph winds to get ~150W. They can peak at about 400 -500W at about 50kph but then drop above that as they lose efficiency in higher winds. That's in ideal turbulent free locations. I've been van lifing in NZ (quite a windy country) for several years now and very rarely find myself in conditions like that. When I am it's not a particularly pleasant experience.

    Great future for solar-powered EVs! Once solar panels go past 50% conversion efficiency, diesel and gasoline engines will be just complementary. With better batteries, solar panels, and atmospheric water generators, I can see a completely off-grid way of life. More power to Solarrolla! Love this, I want one! Now I see I wouldn't need a 1972 Yamaha 340 (or 240? retrofitted from my childhood), but any 1970s snowmobile will do for 2 miles roundtrip on my driveway. Yes we have a big trailer, our F150 pulls, that could transport this. But any chance to make an electric sled that fits INSIDE a 2013 ford transit connect? Maybe a retractable track? Or easy to disassemble for transportation? Doubtful, wishful thinking, but would be fantastic!

    It’s cool but I imagine she has spent a lot of money. Perhaps propane is simpler and probably a whole lot cheaper. My cargo conversion has a 12 refrigerator/freezer which is my biggest need for 12v power. My 230 amp lithium gets me at least 4 days of use before needing a charge. I have propane generator for use when needed for recharge or running my air conditioning. I have propane stove, water heater, heater inside. Went on a 5000 mile trip last summer and maybe used $20 worth of propane. Not against solar though and I set my system to possibly add solar in the future.

    Thought about this last century, almost did it. Was looking at an electric Oshkosh HEMTT base, but either way it came down to surface area. As brief as I can be, I would configure your planned pop-top with tilt array, but not much more, maybe an either-side rack slide from that tilt rack, but not the wings. However, in the end, a trailer is the next stage. Just the size of a tiny pop-up trailer. An aluminum jet ski sized trailer. You could instantly double your range. Put your cells in the lower frame like in the eStar, controllers/chargers/inverters/converters in the next layer or at one end, and build-out your array mounts however you wish. That also brings all setup down to ground level, and maintenance/mod-test too, and is not base vehicle dependent. Umbilical cord (Tesla/J1772, etc.) to the base vehicle. So many benefits… you could leave your trailer power station set up on site and drive into town for supplies while it’s charging, etc. Also investment is portable then, so can be plugged into any other future hauler. Also, multi-customer appeal - could be towed by remote event guy, music festival, dead EV rescue, other ICE RV/campers, even emergency home/business power, etc., for the broadest markets. You will eventually get to this logic as eStar-specific options dwindle and age. Too many other options and uses to list here, they’re all good. Easier and more sustainable package for y’all to build, develop, and improve on too, while still being forward and backward compatible. Great job as is, just imagine what a trailer station could do now, and in the future. You stared it before, but now you have more know-how, advanced perspectives and parts like LightLeaf, Tesla cells, etc.

  • @llN3M3515ll
    @llN3M3515ll หลายเดือนก่อน

    What I don't really understand is the argument of cost vs output and efficiency, and the decisioning on going with used solar panels. You have been doing this for a long time so I am sure you are aware that not all panels are created equally, and some panels are rated for much lower loss over time then others not to mention the other factors like heat loss and output. To your point you will still likely be getting 80-90% generation of what the panel output day one, but I think the bigger thing is actual rating of the panels. Sure I can buy used 250-300w panels for 15 cents a watt, but that doesn't take into consideration all the mounting and wiring etc that is required for those additional panels. Your space is somewhat at a premium and your time is effectively money, so while its awesome you can mill your own lumber and it costs very little to do that, you are spending time doing that, which how much is your time worth? If you look at new panels, I have seen bi facials as high as 650w, if you run the numbers on a 20kw system, @300w you would need 67 panels, @650w you would need 31 panels. If you conservatively estimate a 10% loss on the @300w that brings you to needing 75 panels. So at the end of the day I build out infrastructure for 75 vs 31 panels and get the same output, have I really saved money or has that "savings" been eaten up by the infrastructure required to support more then double the panels?
