San Juan Mountains and the Milky Way Photography
Took my camera to the San Juan Mountains in the Southwestern corner of Colorado for some photos of the Milky Way and The Million Dollar Highway, among many other things. While the entire trip was full of stunning views, I didn't get everything I was after. My photos of The Milky Way outside of Ridgway (yes, that spelling is correct, it's missing an "e") were the highlight of the trip. But even though my landscape photography still needs work, I enjoyed everything about taking these photos. I hope you enjoy!

    The Spotamatic is a good camera for getting acquainted with film photography, because of the metering system and manual controls. It is a robust metal camera that can be banged around some, too.

    I just bought this lens and a few thoughts after some short use. First, optically it’s far superior to the Fuji 18mm. I like the Fuji render a lot especially in video but this is better. Second, I feel this lens is truer to a real 28mm, I always felt with the Fuji was a little wider than 28 and as a result the subjects would seem slightly further away, definitely not the case with this lens. Lastly Fred Miranda has a detailed review of this lens and they really argue granular details and pixel prep, don’t overthink it, but this lens, it’s a beast.

    Love that your in the Denver Area, I'm a fellow FujiFilm Shooter in Brighton, CO. I'm working on figuring out several 'kits' for what I plan to go out and shoot that day. I have the 16-55mmF2.8 and the 50-140mmF2.8 for when I'm specifically going out for landscape or more "serious" photography (my kids soccer game or whatever). I have a outdoor pack with a 70-300mmF4-F5.6 and the 150-600mm for when I go out for wildlife and hiking. Then I have a newly acquired 33mmF1.4 and trying to figure out what to compliment it for my 'everyday carry' lightweight setup that goes in a sling not a backpack. Really debating between a matching 18mmF1.4 or 23mmF1.4. Your videos have been really helpful to try to figure it out. If you ever wanted to meet up for coffee or something in the Denver area I wouldn't mind, you seem like a cool dude. Best Wishes, Brett.

      Thanks, Brett. I should definitely try to branch out more and meet people in the area. I did a Fujifilm photo walk about a month ago that turned out to be quite nice. I also owned the 16-55 and 50-140 2.8s from Fujifilm but traded them in for lighter versions at the beginning of the summer. The 70-300 has been my surprise hit of the summer, a fantastic lens.

    As a long term user of the XPRO3 I would now advise anyone NOT to use the flip screen. Mine has been repaired twice now. The OVF does have uses with lenses of 35mm and below. As for the Compensation dial I whole heartedly agree. Mine often gets knocked off the C setting as I take the camera out of the bag.

    Have you tried the lens on any other camera? I have x-t30ii and i have to shoot at least at 500 of a sec. Otherwise the shots are not sharp(ish). I don’t at all find this lens really sharp and i was so close to send it back after the first use. After the second use i decided to give it a third chance. 🙂 What is your go for distance for street snaps? 5m?

    • @ChrisFreitag
      @ChrisFreitag 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’ve only used it on the X-Pro3, X-T5, and X-T50, which are all supported cameras for the electronic connection. My go to for street is f8, auto shutter speed, focal distance set 1m on the left 8 and infinity on the right 8. That leaves a huge range from 1 m to infinity. I try to keep the subject in the center, usually around 2m or 6 feet.

    • @stockholmgrapher
      @stockholmgrapher 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ChrisFreitag so, 2m is the center of the focus? It is not easy to control it as the focus ring is so sensitive. You have never experienced any difference shooting with x-pro3 as there is no IBIS?

    • @ChrisFreitag
      @ChrisFreitag 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The focus ring is definitely something you need to get used to. Some other comments lead me to believe that some people just aren't getting used to how sensitive it is. This is an example photo from the X-Pro3 and 18mm, but I'm not in motion. glass.photo/freitag/23jCGBvCPuEPZUh2FGNheH

    A question from an inexperienced hobbyist, how difficult is it to use manual focus con street conditions where you need to get a shot very quick?

    • @ChrisFreitag
      @ChrisFreitag 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My honest answer is that at the beginning you will be frustrated, because you will want to raise the camera to your eye or look at the LCD screen and try to gain focus. But if you stick with it, and if you learn how zone focusing works, it can become much faster than autofocus for street photography. And that’s because you will learn to judge the scene based on distance. If the scene before you is within the correct distance, you only need to raise your camera and press the shutter. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a lot of fun.

    I love 18mm on Fujifilm. It my favourite focal length. I have both the Voigtlander 18mm f2.8 and the Fujifilm 18mm f1.4. I think they are both amazing but very different. I love the Voigtlander for size, so I like it for street and it the lens I take if I head out to a restaurant (compact and nice for photos of family and food). I like the Fujifilm for low light, landscape, travel and where I want absolute sharpness and speed of operation. I think the Voigtlander has a three dimensionality about the images - but I’ve never tested against my Fujifilm to see if it’s a real effect.

    • @ChrisFreitag
      @ChrisFreitag หลายเดือนก่อน

      I get that and I wanted to use the 18mm 1.4 that way, but I much prefer the 35mm focal length for landscapes. So I was reaching for my 23mm 1.4 more than the 18. The little pancake has found its way into my heart though, I love it for street and documentary photography.

    I didn’t fully understand your point about the ISO dial, could you rephrase it? So on x100v each ISO stop clicks a bit? I had one before and kinda remember it the opposite being smooth so you have to make sure it’s on the right stop before pushing it back down but that in itself I found quite fast to use. Mainly asking because I used the XT5 but it’s so heavy and mainly the form factor annoyed me so I want to switch to this and hopefully the ISO dial is a good extra compared to like the XT50 which also has one less button the front one so this could be quite nice. I don’t need all the ibis and 40mp for my film like photography and maybe a bit of video but more nature and still shots in successions nothing complex,

    • @ChrisFreitag
      @ChrisFreitag หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just meant that on the X100V, when you want to set ISO you pull a little ring up that’s outside of the shutter ring and it clicks into place. Then you can freely move the ISO dial around and when you are done, you push the ring back down. On the X-Pro3, it doesn’t click into place. You have to pull *and* twist, twisting while you’re still pulling up. Requires a bit more dexterity and you end up having to let go and then pick up again if you’re twisting it further away. Honestly, it’s not a big deal. Easy enough to figure out.

      @@ChrisFreitag Ahhh that makes sense thanks! I’m actually considering the x100v now seeing all the screen issue threads :/ at least I would save on size and get a few extras like flash and ND. Hopefully they will really make the xpro4 better and utilise the space to make it unique.

When I decided to "get serious" (as a hobbyist) about photography I bought a zoom lens and a manual-focus-only prime to see how I felt about each. I found that I loved primes, but also that I didn't enjoy the lag between me raising my x-t30 to my eyes and getting my family's smile, and then watching it fade away as they waited while I fussed with the exposure and focus. So after a few months I sold the zoom and started buying auto-focus-capable primes. A few years later, I am now more comfortable with the exposure triangle and I find that what I really crave is something small that has character - but I am so often taking pictures indoors that I need the wider apertures. This has brought me to the Voigtlander lenses, and I'm comparing the 18mm and the 27mm. So it was very helpful to hear your experience.

      Thank you! If you read some of the other comments, people are really passionate about the Voigtlander 27mm too. It boils down to focal distance and which you prefer. I personally go back and forth a lot.

    Man your thought process is so emotionally based, no clear analytical comparison. My gosh don’t you read the specs and realize how much bigger and heavier the XH2 is? Also why didn’t you RENT the XH2 before trading out ? Didn’t you watch TH-cam videos ? Now I will say the XH2 is a great camera and the PSAM and buttons are so efficient plus with 7 = Custom settings make the XH2 a great camera. My question is now that the XT50 is here what are you going to do….so small with the Gen 5 chip and processor ? ( haha)

    I'd love to hear your decision to go from the X-pro3 to X-T5. Been shooting the X-Pro2 for years now waiting on the X-Pro4 to release, seriously considering moving to the X-T5 in the meantime.

    • @ChrisFreitag
      @ChrisFreitag หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, I had the X-T5 and got the X-Pro3. I loved the X-Pro3 and was using it for everyday and street photography so I traded my X-T5 in for an X-H2 so I could do video and have the 40mp sensor to do landscape photography. But as I started to grow this channel and have a need for a secondary camera, the X-Pro3 wasn’t cutting it. Plus I really did miss IBIS as I shoot a lot in darker scenes and I don’t like using a tripod. That’s mostly the reason, needed a 2nd camera and I wanted IBIS. It wasn’t the 40mp sensor, although it is nice to have. I am surprised that I’m not missing the X-Pro 3 after having it for a year. I really enjoyed that camera. I guess I’m at peace with what I’ve got (for now).

    It’s just unfair to compare Fujinon 18mm 1.4 with Voigtländer. I would understand if you took Fujinon f2, but i’m not sure that f1.4 is made for street photography (or at least not for ‘a small kit’).

    • @ChrisFreitag
      @ChrisFreitag หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I agree that they are completely different lenses. I think I was more stating that one of them is state of the art and the other is manual and is slower but I have more fun with that one. Plus, it was the only other 18mm I have to compare it to.

    • @stockholmgrapher
      @stockholmgrapher หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ChrisFreitag i get it. Those who need 1.4 they go for it. On the other side 28mm f.f.e. is nothing but a street photography angle (and there is no need for 1.4). 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Insane to think I bought a used near mint X-Pro2 a few years ago for 500€ and now it never sells for less than 900 with a shutter count of 900 billion.

    Hi Chris, I full agreed. This is a great lens for street and landscape. I give away my 18 f 1.4, it was sharps and fast, but it was not for me. I also owned the 27mm Voigtländer, but I prefer the Fuji 27 f 2.8 WR over this lens. 1. because I wear glasses and have problems to focus this lens when I take portrait and so on. I use the 18 mm in an other way, where I have not this problems. 2. the Fuji is weather sealed, an every day in use. One detail might be of interest: the older Fuji cameras like XPRO2 can´t communicate with the Voigtländer lenses. You get no exif data about the used aperture. Thank you for sharing your video, its fantastic tongue in cheek, great, I subscribed. Best regards, Bernd

    • @ChrisFreitag
      @ChrisFreitag หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, Bernd! That was a very kind comment. I feel like the Fujifilm 27mm F2.8 is a completely underrated lens in the Fujifilm community, people don’t realize how well the autofocus works, that it’s weather sealed, and that it produces great color. I recently got a comment on my First Impressions video that a person wasn’t seeing the frame lines in the OVF on their X-Pro2 and I went to the Voigtlander page and found out that the electronics don’t work for the older models. I should have stated that in my review.

    As soon as you said that the xf 35 1.4 renders something magical quite like the x100v I subscribed because that's exactly how I feel and exactly why I can't allow myself to sell my x100 camera. However, ive recently purchased an XT3 (upgraded from xt30) and are there any other lenses which render similar to the xf35mm 1.4? I'm not a technical person, nor a pro photographer, but I think the term I am referring to is highlight rolloff. I didn't like any of the fujicron lenses because of the way they handled highlights - too sharp in the highlights and the transition between highlights to shadows was too strong. I watched another video of yours praising the xf16-55 and is that better than the fujicrons? any help would be appreciated.

    • @ChrisFreitag
      @ChrisFreitag หลายเดือนก่อน

      First, thank you for watching my channel! I’m glad I’ve been helpful. I have discovered that the “R” model of the older lenses, all perform similarly. So the XF23f1.4 R and the XF56f1.2 R have that same kind of quality. I did really like the 16-55f2.8 zoom but it was so heavy. Right now I’m finding a lot of joy in the Fujifilm 70-300 and Sigma 18-50f2.8 zooms for landscapes.

    It's worth mentioning that turning on focus assists will punch in zoom whenever you start focusing the lens. Also, changing the electronic distance scale to film instead of pixel will align with the distance scale that is on the lens.
