Paul & Barbie's Backyard Garden
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 ก.พ. 2021
Hello I'm Paul. I was born and raised in Northwest Florida. My wife and I are backyard hobby gardeners. Our videos will contain raised bed, container, and in ground gardening. We may even share a little cooking and other hobbies as well. We are not master gardeners but love to learn and try different growing techniques. Our videos are so others can share our gardening journey with us to maybe be inspired like we've been inspired. If our videos bring some peace & joy to your day that will be a blessing to us. Thank you very much for watching and hope you'll subscribe to our channel. Every time you "like, share, or comment", you're being a tremendous help to our channel. Thank you and God Bless!

Those motion sensing water sprayers work really well at scaring critters outta the garden. Tfs
@@jenniferm3572 I actually planted a second round of corn and bought a motion sprinkler. It did help but still battled the squirrels. I believe next spring I’m going to invest in electric netting fence. Certainly not giving growing corn, lol. Thank you for commenting and watching. Have a blessed day✝️
@@paulandbarbie1969 Darn. Maybe a feeder outside of the garden would satisfy them long enough to let the corn grow. That may be a great or terrible idea though. lol 😬 If it were me I know I would try some cayenne pepper and or some pure peppermint or eucalyptus oil. The essential oils around the garden of course. The cayenne on the plants. I know those squirrels are just eating up everything they can get their little hands on right now. I keep finding chewed up pine cones in my pots. They haven’t discovered my corn YET. I will say a prayer for both of us in the meantime. 😁 You have a blessed day as well. 🤍✝️
@@jenniferm3572 yep, have a feeder outside the garden too, lol….Oh well, that’s gardening, good luck with yours
How did you sterile the jars
@@womack5086 I have a large canning pot, I use that pot to boil & sterilize them. I have seen some folks just run them through the dishwasher using the santatize setting. Hope this helps, thank you for watching✝️
When's the best time of year to plant sweet potatoes here in PC? And how do you know when to harvest them? Also, what do you mean by cure them ?
The best time in PC is mid to late May or early June to plant, but we have planted as early as April. Sweet potatoes are very heat tolerate, so they make a great summer crop when most spring vegetables are finishing up. As far as when to harvest, the plants/vines don't really die back like regular potato plants do to indicate ready to harvest. Depending on the sweet potato variety it's usually 90 to 120 days. So, we just count back and when close start scratching around a little to see what we have. Curing means drying out for preserving, so the potatoes will store for months. There's a lot of videos out there showing how to store them for curing. We personally don't have the best climate or set up to do it the best way. We use a spare bedroom and spread the potatoes out on a sheet and let cure for approximately 2 to 3 weeks and this works for us. The starches will convert to sugar and make the potatoes very sweet. Hope this helps, thank you for watching
@paulandbarbie1969 yes it does Paul. Very helpful info. Thanks for sharing your video and responding to my questions.
@@marionmassinger1212 You're welcome, not sure if you saw my fall bucket potato planting video, if so, I'll be posting a harvest video when they're ready
Good info.Thanks for sharing Paul.
You're welcome, thank you for watching. I'll do a follow up video when time to harvest (regardless whether successful or not). Have a blessed day!
Just saw this 22/8/24, from north of the 49th. Saw your freezer packs - are these Henderson Bush Beans "lima beans"? I've always loved them (though, I have an aunt who HATES them). As a kid, I was 'FORCED' to shell peas & pick beans, etc. & resented it. NOW, I wish I'd paid far more attention, as I lost the opportunity to LEARN lots of old-time wisdom. Rats! All best wishes!
yes, these are Henderson Lima beans. I too did not like shelling when I was kid, but love gardening and all that goes along with it. Thank you for watching, if you haven’t, hope you’ll subscribe. Have a blessed day✝️🧑🏻🌾🇺🇸
@@paulandbarbie1969 Thanks for your kind reply. Cheers, and Happy Growing!!
That is the prettiest, neatest garden I have ever seen. Great job!
Thank you, and thank you for watching
I would love to purchase a bottle ❤️🙏🏾
Unfortunately, I only had enough peppers to make a few bottles. Those bottles have been given to some family & friends to be my taste testers. If the recipe turns out good, I plan on growing many more plants next season to make several bottles. We don't sell any, we just share what we have. Keep watching would love to get you a bottle my friend!
I have always used apple cider vinegar. Will have to try this.
Carol, this was my first time. If I can get enough peppers off our plants, I'm going to try one using apple cider vinegar
I watched~Chief
Good explanation on drip system. Trap squirrels & relocate to another area. Had/have issues with squirrels chewing on everything so place stock corn or loose corn kernels/sunflower seeds inside trap inside a bigger trap-they to smart. When catch I release into wilds with another cup of goodies. Neighbors got mad until one had to pay electrician to rewire some outdoor things, $$$. But squirrel is good eating after frost hit in SC to get rid of weevil.
Thanks 🎉❤😢🎉❤😮
I'm gona try this.
It's not a comprehensive tutorial but a general instruction how I build them
That was an awesome garden either way. Loved the irrigation. Great job!
Thank you, we had a great corn harvest last year with no squirrel issues. We're going to try a late summer corn planting and currently researching humane options for squirrel deterrents. Thank you for watching!
Awesome potato harvest!😊
That scarecrow is outstanding in his field.
Had to plant hot peppers this year for just that reason too! As for name, since has Disney tie go with one of those themed names. Also since you live in Florida, right? If doing scarecrow, that owl in background not doing its job. 😂
Yep, we're in Northwest Florida. That Owl decoy in the background was a complete waste of money, lol...Any Disney name suggestions?
@@paulandbarbie1969 Always partial to goofy.
@@Mandy-q6c He looks a little Goofy too, I like it
@@paulandbarbie1969 Also how your carrots doing? More came up this year but still not as many as planted
@@Mandy-q6c Our second round I planted back in February are starting to get some traction, but with this Florida heat not sure how well they will do. I plan on doing a video soon showing how they did, good or bad
Love it
Thank you
I love the design of of your garden and the vegetables are looking good. I would love for a future video of your pickled banana peppers! Squirrels are also a problem in my area. We just caught some today digging up our 2nd planting of corn. We have the electric Premier One poultry fence and it keeps them out. I will be helping my husband install it today after work. My only suggestion would be when you are filming, try not to spin around.
Thank you for the kind words. Yes, my wife said the same thing about “spinning”. I’m working on better videography skills. I do plan on a video pickling banana peppers. Thank you for watching. Have a blessed day!✝🧑🏻🌾
Gonna grow any green beans or okra?
Yes, we'll be planting some okra in the coming weeks. Okra is a great hot weather veggie, very heat tolerate. As far as beans, we do plan on some type of beans that can double as a cover crop after our corn is harvested. Corn should be ready around the end of May. Thank you for watching Carol!
Amazing that you can harvest potatoes 🥔 at this time of the year.
Yes, our potato planting season in Northwest Florida zone 9a is February
What a harvest! Those onions look wonderful!
We had a good onion year, God is good!
Love those planter beds! Maybe you could do a video sometime about how to set up your beds as well as where to buy them.
When we expand our garden more raised beds, we certainly will do a video. Thank you for watching
I like the push plow you have. Looks like it does a good job. I think kinnebec is the variety we planted.
The double wheel hoe is from Hoss Tools, it's a great tool for the small backyard gardener. Our bucket varieties are Yukon Gold and Red Norland. Our in ground plot has one row of Yukon Gold (which we love), the other row is half Kennebec, and Russet. This is our first growing "taters" in ground. So far they're coming along well.
Take the lid off Paul.... Jeez
Thank you for the advice "Captain Obvious"...Now lunch is on you Chief
Thank you for the info on the potatoes…and those carrots are beautiful-even the little ones. 😊
Thank you
Try some Warba, super early, great for baby spuds.
Have some planted in my container garden. Thanks for watching!
@@paulandbarbie1969 I planted some in Canada (we are snowbirds) harvested, sorted the smaller ones, now here in Arizona they are close to hilling. They were my Mom's go to for early planting, some would be planted Jan 1ish if there was no snow, she would mulch with heavy layer of straw, by spring break we had golf ball size, what a spring treat they were. Seeds are not easy to find, but well worth the online ordering.
My wife and I like the smaller ones, always tasty...The bucket potatoes usually are smaller, we just enjoy gardening and different growing techniques. Thank you for the comments and watching our channel@@johac7637
Paul, was there any significance in the way you put the potato potatoes in the ground eyes up eyes down. Also, you should mention how long normally a potato or variety potato takes before harvesting. Also mention how often you should water and fertilize.
I always plant with the eyes up, but regardless they will find the sunlight. Harvesting is tricky, I planted three different varieties and all have different maturity dates, but a good average is 90 days. There’s no single answer for watering, depends on your soil, rainfall, region, etc. Let the plants talk to you, if they look healthy probably getting enough water, wilting then increase. On average about an inch a week
Show progress of carrots, as short!!!Trying pelleted this year. Do you do anything special with soil? Like shift potting soil? Haven’t had luck with carrots yet. Trying again.
Our raised bed soil is a mixture of peat moss, potting soil, and Black Kow compost. Approximately equal parts of each. I fertilize with fish emulsion about every 3 to 4 weeks. We too use pelleted seeds.
👍thanks for response. Going to set up timer to water initially. Never thought to use fish emulsion. 🙏success this year.
When germinating your carrot seeds, just keep the soil moist, not saturated, and don't let them dry out during this period. Once they get established after a few weeks they're pretty easy to take care of. Good luck with your garden!@@Mandy-q6c
How often do you water your potatoes? Also noticed blood & bone in video, did you use both?
Used just the bone meal. As far watering there’s no simple answer. After the vegetation emerges and if no rain, usually about an inch a week. If the plants wilt I increase
Thanks
you're welcome and thank you for watching. I'm not a master gardener, my wife and I are just backyard hobby gardeners learning more and more each season@@Mandy-q6c
Great Tutorial Paul. I enjoy your videos!!
Thank you, and thanks for watching
Thank you, Paul, for the tutorial! I think I’m going to try my hand at planting potatoes again! 😊
You’re welcome, really nothing to it, good luck
Have a show on your raised metal planners and where you got them from
I’ll do that, thanks for watching
Paul get a body Mike when you're away from the camera. Can't hardly understand you
Ordered one but wasn’t compatible, have a new one ordered. Should have it for next video
Great job!!
Word of caution- for those living in difficult growing zones, the soil temperatures will have greater fluctuations as a result of being raised above ground. These fluctuations will be more violent than inground, growing or even larger raised beds.
Thank you for your response. That is why I’ve shared I’m in Northwest Florida. Techniques that work for us may not work for others. Have a blessed day✝
In Texas, I stopped even trying pots and buckets
Good luck with your growing techniques @@joeinge4808
I’ll have to try this. Thanks for sharing.

Wow Paul, y’all have really utilized your space well. Also, those cauliflower are just beautiful. I hope you post videos when you get ready to plant stuff in your buckets. Little how-to videos would be great 😊
Thank you Beth, all credit to my wife for the cauliflower. I do plan on posting a video on how I plant potatoes in 5 gallon buckets. Thank you for watching, have a blessed day!
