In all seriousness...I do love this. Wonderful guitarist who I am only now discovering. Interesting in that he barely bends a string throughout. Lots of double stops filling the sound out. He has the tremolo set to exactly the right tempo so it doesn't sound too cluttered. He makes this sound easy, but he's doing some pretty complex stuff....all on a Fender vi, essentially a six string bass. Had to have pretty heavy gauge strings on there also. Athletic playing.

Pops Staples is a great guitar is but Sandy came long before him by at least 10 years. It's just a similar way of playing. I play Sandy on my radio show in the 70s and 80s but this was before the days of computers and never knew much about him. I didn't know he had a drug problem but that's not a surprise. And I had my show on non-commercial radio at UCSB so we didn't have a lot of power. I would've loved to have seen him play live, I don't think he toured much, I just saw an old clip of Memphis by Chuck Berry and it reminded me of Sandy again, I loved his version of it. Didn't know he died so young, at 60. He was definitely one of the most talented guitarist ever

Actually Pops did the tube trem thing way earlier than Sandy, for example check out the Staple Singers Uncloudy Day from the mid fifties here on TH-cam. But Sandy was one of the greats indeed. Apparently they made a documentary about his life & playing named after one of his tracks (No Deposit No Return Blues) and it's a pain that I can't find it anywhere.

Ha! I lived in Santa Barbara, and my brother had a copy of "Fantasies for Guitar and Banjo". I dearly loved that album and this song, but was utterly mesmerised by "Blend". That probably explains a few things today......

If you read the liner notes to the album, Sandy Bull was purposely emulating Pop Staples.

+sean craine One of his problems was very heavy drug use which you may be aware of. I think I saw him at San Francisco State Blues Festival in 1967 and tried to look it up. Did see Chambers Brothers, Steve Miller (who was very much a blues artist then), John Hammond and others.
