Larry Crane’s Fond Farewell to Elliott Smith
Larry Crane is a recording engineer, founder of Tape Op magazine, and official archivist for the Elliott Smith estate. In late 2024, Crane gave a new remaster to Smith’s final album, 'From a Basement on the Hill.' Smith died during the making of the album and the record was finished by his friends and released posthumously.
In conversation with KEXP's Dusty Henry, Crane reflects on his friendship with Smith coming up together in Portland, the songwriter’s prowess, and the process of revisiting and remastering this heavy but monumental album.

Bratmobility scooter 😊
Fast Stories was, in my humble opinion, the best thing to come out of the entire region in that era. It's one of the best albums that is up there with Marquee Moon, Ziggy Stardust, Funhouse, Are You Experienced, and whatever album you wanna bring up. I've always loved Hiro as a person and a bassist.
It is great that Chris is back. Girls was such a masterpiece.
This is great! Does anyone have any more information about Charlie Hill writing for The Simpsons?
Muy lindo, muy lindo... Sólo falto Sister. Saludos.
Absolutely love Christopher Owens and looking forward to a 2025 tour. Such a great record. No Good is my favorite.
Dios es lo más bello que e oído sobre Mon se me erizo la piel gracias porque a ella la admiro mucho grande Mon Laferte

Thank you for a great interview.

Fantastic segment. I loved hearing from Hiro. The audio production with voice over filling out narrative gaps is also top notch. Thanks for the quality programming!
Hey i Moses NJ sorry
"I was trying to fit in by listening to the Newsboys." Such a relatable experience. I discovered PTL in 1997 around the time the Whole EP was released, I was 16 and embedded in the evangelical church. I'd moved from Fresno (just south of Modesto) to Seattle (Bothell) in 1992 to live with relatives. To me, then, Dave's lyrics were a breath of fresh air, so very human, yet still with the intention of understanding god. I remained a huge fan from that point forward, and coincidentally, I'd completely abandoned religion by 2003. To this day, I listen to PTL/DB regularly, I find it insanely comforting, even when it stirs up old emotions from the past.
Get your songs to Sierra Ferrell. I'm so happy you're making such great music again.
Kick ass, you’ve done Summit County proud.
My advice, embrace your misogynism. Yes that's not a word. It should be Never in the history of America or the world have men - particularly white men been given license, justification, by woke liberal women a reason to strike back. They have done more to damage true feminism than any other movement in history. It will be a long journey to mending the relationship between men and women as a result.
This is a massive Mandela effect for me. In my reality, the knack only had one album their first album dissolved and never recorded together again so I am thrilled that I've got two more albums to listen to, but man that's a mindblower.
estos si son canales informativos cawn puro black flag
Do You Need A Friend? is one of the best songs Chris has ever made. What a great album!
Agreed
Just want to interject do not ever do that Can you smell your own pets?
You have a typo in the copy above. Not being totally picky, I'm sharing the video with a quote, so just a heads up. - "Sacchine Trust’s debut is one of the most original releases from the SST".
Honestly that book was my mainstays high school. I stole it from the school library and still have it to this day. Honestly loved his jiki hendrix book too. I miss him man he was one the best rock writers ever
Lot of pearl clutching about the record
Alex Kassian…god mode…sublime!
Thank you for giving my favorite album ever some attention! I’ve had this on rotation for decades.
Cantaora de canciones, devanarás de historias, el hilo de historias, tejedora de relatos. Eres una flor tan joven y con esa voz rasgada en un desierto de esperanza. Eeeeeeexitos 💪♀️👏
... And I spose you meant "by a hundred million people", not a hundred thousand.
Give guns to the queers
😢❤😢🎉😢
Hearing Hiro's story is great, and it's sad he and Chris Cornell never got to resolve their friendship.
Great band.
Sucks
Jason mizel larry mizel
Found this record in a goodwill when I was 16 (36 now) and probably threw it away. I am a moron.
I love that square cools song , found it on not all quiet on the western front comp when I was a kid
Gracias por lo que haces, Helado. <3
Can’t we ‘reverse age’ the band, as though they were their actual age, now..?
so cool to get an interview with Hiro. Thank you both for doing this. Really influential, my favorite era of Soundgarden, and he's been such a huge part of my life with his music~!!
