Chicago Style Eats - Episode 0201 - Pizza Pot Pie
It may not be known to travelers far and wide, but the Pizza Pot Pie - available only(?) at the Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company - is the beloved of many a Chicagoan in the know.
For you Chicago history buffs, the Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company sits directly across the street from the site of the infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre that occurred in 1929.
Served in the same establishment at the same location since 1972 (that's 52 years, yo!), the Pizza Pot Pie is a single-serving palate-pleaser that s a bit of Chicago history unto itself!
And we're pretty confident none of Al Capone's gang are still roaming the neighborhood!
Enjoy!

Snacking is fun, but too often we're plagued by guilt afterwards. One way to get around that depression spiral is to pair something bad with something good. Like ice cream on kale. No? How about bacon and a strawberry smoothie? Still no? Okay, cake frosting on a green, seedless grape? Actually, someone on the south and/or west side of Chicago has already done that. When a green grape just isn't...

Chicago isn't a Philly Cheesesteak kinda town (hint: "Philly" is in the name), but some sandwich shop owners have brought the Philly Cheesesteak to town so they could IMPROVE it and, in so doing, have made it a Chicago Style Eat! KFC’s first franchise was in SLC in 1952. Harold Pierce opened his first restaurant in 1950. Your time frame and backstory about redlining makes no sense. Also, the whole ‘I’m going to talk to my African-American friend about fried chicken’ is seriously cringe. Go back to Aurora, or Naperville, or Winnetka or whatever suburb you come from and stop trying to talk about things you know zilch about.

    • @ChicagoStyleEats-rz2rc
      @ChicagoStyleEats-rz2rc 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      First of all, thanks for watching! We love the views! Second, congratulations on catching us in a minor timeline error uttered in an extemporaneous conversation about redlining in Chicago during the 1950s. Stephanie’s direct quote includes the phrase, “KFC and ALL THE OTHER fast-food chains wouldn’t come to the south side....” Whether Kentucky Fried Chicken did or did not exist as a franchise in 1950, Harold Pierce responded to a need in the Chicago south side fast-food market against a specific obstacle - redlining. But, hey! We appreciate the split hairs! “The character of Harold’s developed primarily out of necessity because THE LARGER FAST-FOOD CHAINS TENDED TO AVOID AFRICAN-AMERICAN NEIGHBORHOODS. In turn, CHICAGO’S LEGAL AND SOCIAL OBSTACLES TO BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES AT THE TIME PREVENTED HAROLD’S FROM EXPANDING INTO DOWNTOWN OR THE NORTH SIDE. Harold’s became one of the few examples of a thriving fast-food chain that was owned by and primarily served the black community.” - The History of Harold’s Chicken (www.haroldschickenscorp.com/about) (emphasis Chicago Style Eats) Third, Rodney isn’t our “African-American friend.” He’s our friend, period. He happens to have grown up on the south side, still lives on the south side, and is very excited about our show. The reason he appears in this episode - WHICH IS ABOUT MILD SAUCE, BY THE WAY, a condiment found fairly exclusively on the south and west sides of Chicago - is because he offered to help us in any way we needed if ever we were recording our show on the south side, and we thought it would be fun to have our friends join us for this episode. Fourth, Tony grew up and has lived in and around Chicago for nearly his entire life, and Stephanie lives in the city. Our purpose for doing this show is to share the book we discovered which gives love to the city we love, and to share our experiences as we explore the foods highlighted in the book. Again, thanks for watching!

    An amazing dish! I probably ate it 500 times in the mid 80s when I was a student at the School of the Art Institute. Back in the day you could duck out through the back door and sneak down the service corridor to the Nisei Lounge for a beer and be back by the time the food hit the table or preferred counter seat. Thanks for the show. No offense, but you guys probably aren't the right people to critique rib tips. You are lowkey comparing the texture to babyback ribs. Trust and believe that people aren't waiting that long, for tough ribs. This is old school bbq, bought here by our ancestors who migrated north, and you cannot find that anywhere anymore, so I'm glad Lem's still exist.

    • @ChicagoStyleEats-rz2rc
      @ChicagoStyleEats-rz2rc 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No offense taken! You're correct: we probably AREN'T the right people to critique rib tips (we're also probably not the right people to have a TH-cam show, but here we are....) That's why we strove this season NOT to make this a food critique show (though we slipped a few times (we're looking at YOU, Chicago Corn Roll Tamales!)) We make the comparison from the viewpoint of people for whom "ribs" has always meant "babyback" or "spare ribs," and for whom "good ribs" has always meant "meaty" and "fall-off-the-bone tender." Our intent was to point out that rib tips are NOT those ribs, but that they are nonetheless succulent, tasty, and heavenly mouthfuls for meat lovers. Hell, I ate a whole bucket of Lem's tips throughout the following week! Our hope is to get back to Lem's in the coming season of Chicago Style Eats and, hopefully, have a chat for the show with Carmen, James Lemons's daughter and current Lem's owner. She is training the next generation in the old school traditions and hopes they will carry on with the business when she is done. We hope Lem's lives on for another 70 years! Thank you for watching, and for taking the time for constructive comment. It helps us in our effort to make the show better.

    Yes...the full dip is the proper dip.... My very first job was in fall 1971 at the Village Beef Shoppe in Oak Park. I worked lunch hour M-F and then worked on either Fri or Sat nights. Since my sister was dating the owner of the shop there wasn't really any job application or anything. And back then nobody really looked too hard at how old I was, so I'm not sayin' I'm just sayin'. Anyway, we made beef from scratch and only used Gonnella bread. Of course, when I was even younger we would ride our bikes to Johnny's over by St. Vincent's church. I do luv me me a beef sweet dipit! Tony, what was your go to beef stand back in the day?

    Their chili burger is also delicious with tomato slices. We just ate there last week. It's not too far from home, just down the street.

    For a thin crust pizza, it has to be Neapolitan style pizza for me! And for thicker crust pizza, I prefer Sicilian pan pizza. Does that mean I am not a true Chicagoan since I do not prefer either of the pizzas originating in Chicago! Great episode!

      We’re pretty sure there’s enough pizza to go around in this city! Who’s your go-to for Neapolitan? Out is Spacca Napoli in Ravenswood. We’re not sure if we’ve ever had Sicilian pan pizza. Where’s our best bet for that?

      @@ChicagoStyleEats-rz2rc If you want an old school Sicilian pan pizza, try D'Amato's on Grand Avenue in Noble Square/West Town. For the hipster version, I like Pizza Friendly Pizza in Ukrainian Village/West Town. Let me know what you think! And we will have to go to Spacca Napoli together some time! Craft Pizza or Coalfire were our go places for Neapolitan pizza to when we lived in the city. Now that we are in the suburbs we like Forno Rossa in Elmwood Park.

    Someone got high and got it made. The same with putting gyro meat on a Italian Beef or cheeseburger.
