Hi, I'm Mattias! I play single player open world, survival, RPG and strategy games.
Calm and methodical is my thing. Here, there will be no screaming, no expletives, no fake TH-cam personality and no face covering half the screen. Just good, old me, playing the games I like, the way I like them.
I have an academic background in artificial intelligence. I've worked for over 30 years as a professional software developer. During that time, I've been doing game development as a hobby. So I've always been interested in games, and find the technology behind them utterly fascinating. I enjoy thinking about the games I play, and when I get the chance, I also try to explain the "behind the scenes" of how the game works.

nice video man glad to see people still show interest in this top tier game keep it up 🤘
Thank you! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the video! Valheim truly is an amazing game.
Says ashland shows mountain. TH-cam needs to update their clickbait policy.
Interesting comment, and I appreciate you taking the time to write it. However, given that literally one of the first sentences I say in the video is "We're playing with the Ashlands update, and the last boss we've defeated is Bonemass", I fail to see any click bait here whatsoever, as the content of the video clearly and completely matches the thumbnail and description. Also, as the majority of the text in your comment concern TH-cam's policies, I would kindly like to point out I am not TH-cam. It would thus benefit you more to send suggestions about updates to TH-cam policies to, well, TH-cam.
Keep up the vids!
I really appreciate your encouragement, and I will do my very best to keep publishing a new video every week!

Thank you! That's such a nice thing for you to say. It made me happy to read!
I think you will have lag problems in the near future with this kind of base. The looks are there but there are too many build pieces in the same area!
This is, for me, a very small base. I'm deliberately trying to keep things simple and comparably tiny, in order to focus on game progress. That is the main reason why I'm doing this series: whenever I play the game on my own, I end up building and building and building, instead of progressing. By doing this as a TH-cam series, I kind of "owe" my viewers some progress now and then... The point is, in the two game worlds I've played before, where I've ended up building instead of finishing the game, my bases are roughly 10 and 40 times larger than this one, and I've had no problems there. I don't expect there'll be any problems with my small base here, though I could of course be wrong. Time will tell!
Hello Mattias. Really nice video on the basement build! It's a good thing that you built your base parallel with the way the earth breaks into straight lines. It was a good mix of real-time, sped up, and skipping to the end to understand exactly what you were trying to accomplish. Very enjoyable to watch your process and hear your problem solving. BTW, I'm a native English speaker and I think your English is great! Perhaps it's the large number of Norwegians and Swedes living in Minnesota or perhaps me just being used to my Finnish and Estonian relatives accents, but I think your English is very clear. I speak Vietnamese and a bit of Spanish but would never be brave enough to narrate any videos in anything other than my mother tongue! Cheers!
Thank you! Your comments are always appreciated! Yes, building parallel to the north-south or east-west axis is almost necessary in this game. I try to do that even when building things that doesn't strictly require it, because you never know what you'll end up building in the future. I'm glad to hear you're able to follow my broken English. I started to learn English in school when I was 10 years old, and continued with that until I was 18. But during that time, all my teachers were Swedes, speaking with a heavy accent. Once or twice a year, they brought forth a tape recorder (not a cassette recorder, but a classic tape recorder with two rolls and a tape going between them) with a British woman speaking a few phrases. So in all those years, I had maybe a couple of hours of time listening to a native English speaker. Thus, that English with a Swedish accent became imprinted on my brain, and there is almost nothing I can do to get rid of it now. The words in my head are without accent, but I just can't force my mouth to form them the way they sound in my head! 😆 I'm so jealous of my kids. They've grown up surrounded by English. They watch movies in English. They listen to English audio books. They play games in English. Even my 9 year old daughter is much better than me at English, in terms of pronunciation. Her vocabulary is lacking, but she sounds so much better than me!
@@MvonSchantz I do understand your jealousy of your kids. LOL. My 17 year old son went to a Spanish immersion school and can speak it without effort. I struggle when speaking to my parents as I left Vietnam when I was 4 and in some ways still speak like a 4 year old when it comes to Vietnamese. And your English is not broken at all. You are quite fluid!
@@hmdoan0 Oh, that must be hard, not quite having a language in common with your parents! I understand it's an experience shared by millions of families around the world, who have left their countries of origin, but it's still hard to imagine. Language is such an important, basic part of life.
Since you are new to content creation and have a bit of an accent as well considering you're a fellow EU gamer, I'd advise you the following. Subtitles; For Valheim specifically, yellow text with a slightly more bolder font with a black stroke would be perfect. As a person who has done subtitles in the past, it will take you a very long time writing and animating and putting text with the right timing across everything you say, but it will keep people a bit more engaged. You also mumble and are a bit hard to understand at times despite having a good microphone so this would help. Practice talking and pronounciation; You do a lot " Uhm " -- " Ah " and the likes. Which opens gaps in the attention grabbing you should be attempting to do and it just doesn't feel good to listen to. Certainty and confidence helps a commentary by a lot. Editing; Like when you were putting down the turnips, you could've edited it all out in a sequence where you cut each turning plant and speed it up. Watching someone do mundane things in a very slow matter like that just doesn't retain attention. In fact, it becomes almost annoying to watch. That said though, I'm not talking about ADHD level of editing and cutting. But just seeing the whole gameplay of everything, a person would feel better playing the game rather than watching someone else do it. There's no " entertainment " factor in this which, there should be because videos are a form of entertainment. Other than that, keep going! Good luck on your journey.
Thank you for your comments! It's great to get this type of feedback, very much appreciated! I've done subtitling in the past. Not for TH-cam, but I've worked in video production for many years, where subtitling is required. And I love subtitles myself - whenever I watch English content, I always watch with English subtitles, so I know how important they are. Unfortunately, like you said, subtitling takes time. Too much time. I already spend up towards 16 hours producing each episode of this series, and I just can't justify spending even more time on it, not with a full time job and three kids. But believe me, I've thought about it, and I would very much want to. I just can't afford the time to do it. As for my voice work, I have an upcoming _Channel Update_ video where I'll explain (among other things) in more detail some of the reasons why my voice work is the way it is. But a large part of it is because I'm speaking in a foreign language. I don't always find the right words. At times, I have to stop and think about what I'm saying or how it should be pronounced. I've practiced speaking English for close to 40 years now, and I think there's very little I could do to improve it further. Possibly some very expensive voice and English coaching could help a tiny bit, but I can't afford that for a non-commercial TH-cam channel. And switching the series to Swedish wouldn't work either, as that would cut my potential audience by a factor of 100. I completely agree with you that editing is important, and should be done to improve flow and keep things interesting. Which is why I've always cut down every single farming session I've done in this playthrough, only keeping the planting of the first and last few vegetables in the video, and cutting away the rest. And since I did that in this video as well (the entire planting session of 100 turnips where cut down to 13 seconds), I'm not quite sure what you refer to. Maybe I just misunderstood what you meant. It's also the same reason why I always cut away portal transitions, bed time and wood cutting, and speed up all longer walks. But it's also important to remember that this series is classified as a full playthrough, not as a curated series, and so it should include all gameplay moments during the playthrough, even though I'm allowing myself shorten (but not completely remove) the more mundane of them. Thank you again for taking the time to write such detailed feedback! I really do appreciate that!
ฉันจะเริ่มเล่นในวันพรุ่งนี้ และฉันชอบที่จะออกแบบบ้านเช่นเดียวกัน ขอให้คุณสนุกเช่นเดียวกับฉัน🎉
I'm glad you like it! Best of luck, and have fun playing the game!
Hi Matthias. Thanks for another relaxing Valheim video. There is just something about the early stages of the game that's so calming and relaxing. LOL. I think you used to watch some of True Blue's Valheim videos. I'm guilty of binge-watching all of his 270-something videos over a period of just 3 weeks! But I really loved the look and feel of his current base build and decided to do a copy-cat build on my own map. th-cam.com/video/y6P68h9FVKw/w-d-xo.html If you don't mind, as one Valheim builder to another, please tell me your thoughts. I built this in debug mode as the terraforming would have taken forever otherwise. LOL. Cheers!
First of all, my apologies for not replying to your comment until now. I think TH-cam stuck it in review limbo since it contained a link, and I didn't notice it until now. My fault entirely, I should remember to check the "Held for review" comments. That's right, @true-blue-gamer was my entertainment this summer, though I think his series took a bit more than three weeks for me to watch... 😊 I stopped bingeing it after the whole Yagluth thing of his, but I've seen a few episodes here and there after that as well. I can definitely see the inspiration he provided you! I'm very happy I got to see your base. You've talked about it before, but it's one thing to hear a description, and quite another to get to see it! You've built a very beautiful base there. There's so much detail! I see a a lot of building pieces I'm not even familiar with (yet), but you've put them to good use. I think the building strategy is quite different when you build a base in debug mode compared to when you build it during gameplay. It's not that one is better than the other, it's just that the realities of the game mode shapes the build. And I have to admit I've never used debug mode, so I'm not very familiar with it. But you've done a great job there!
@@MvonSchantz Thanks for indulging me, Matthias! And thank you for your very kind words. I've always been a builder and used to be a modder in the early days of modding games like Morrowind and Oblivion. I was the author of the huge castle named Helios Keep which got some attention in the day. But now I just indulge that building itch in games like Valheim. LOL. Please keep up the wonderful videos. The basement build was very fun to watch! For immersion, perhaps you can have a double-decker hearth. One hearth in the basement and another on the main floor. If you enclose both of them in stone, I'm pretty sure the top hearth won't block the smoke from the bottom one. Cheers!
LOL. This had to be your funniest episode. Thankfully we have portals!
Thank you! Oh, yes, what a nightmare this episode would have been to do without portals! I shudder to even think about it... 😆
That's a very nice looking dock! I've never seen a design quite like the one you built. As a former civil engineer, the Valheim structural integrity makes no sense at all. LOL! Thanks for another enjoyable video, Mattias.
Thank you! I can't take full credit for the design, though. The idea of building a dock in two levels, and the decorations on the supporting poles are both inspired by other docks I've seen, but I think the rest of it is mine. I fully understand what you mean with the structural integrity system in Valheim not making sense. But as a software engineer, I'm still fascinated by the algorithm they use, and I do think it still makes a certain sense, in its own way. In my opinion, it's a good enough approximation, for a system that has to run in real time in a vast open world. But you're absolutely right, from a real world perspective, it doesn't make much sense. It's still better than those games that completely lack a structural integrity system, where you can build in thin air. I find that completely immersion breaking, and I much prefer the Valheim SI system to that.
@@MvonSchantz That's awesome! I love to hear your opinion on Valheim from software engineering perspective. I worked as a sysadmin/monitoring rule developer before I retired. Modeling physics would be challenging and still allow the game to be playable on a system that doesn't cost $5000.
@@hmdoan0 I think the most important aspect of the SI system in Valheim is that it's following a limited and well defined set of rules, just like physics does in the real world. Now, the rules themselves are different from the laws of nature, of course, but because they're limited and well defined they can be learned, just like the laws of nature can be learned in the real world. And when you do, you can intuitively understand the SI system in Valheim, the same way you can intuitively understand some physics in the real world, even though the rules themselves behave differently. Of course, under certain conditions, there are also some situations where intuition breaks down and things don't work the way you expect them to... but that's sometimes true in the real world as well. Just with a different set of rules. The way I like to think about the Valheim SI algorithm is that the game represents every building in SI space as well as in physical space. And in SI space, every building piece has a dimension that's different from its physical dimension - for example, in SI space, most wood pieces are practically cubes and most stone pieces are very wide horizontally, and very thin vertically. Then the SI engine calculates structural integrity by, for every building piece, tracing the shortest path to the ground in SI space. That's how I think about it. Of course it's simplified, and it doesn't take into account special cases like when you have corner pieces held up by multiple neighbors, or the fact that stone resets the ground level for wood, but still... as a simplified way of understanding the algorithm, I think it's a viable model.
Nice relaxing Valheim videos! I would plant those birch tree seeds near your base for future fine wood needs. :)
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy the videos! I'm actively trying to preserve the natural landscape around my base as much as possible. As I've built the base in a rather small clearing with forest on all sides, planting trees around it would probably mean they'd hit other, naturally growing trees when I cut them down, and I'd end up with a cascade effect, clearing half the forest. So instead, I have a WOOD portal, where I do all my tree cutting. I could plant the birch seeds there, for sure.
@@MvonSchantz I forgot about that aspect from your earlier videos. I agree - preserving the nature around the base is important to me as well. I actually converted meadows into black forest around my base compound as I like the look of the pines and spruces better. LOL. It took forever to do by hand.
@@hmdoan0 Oh, I can imagine! But I'm sure it was worth it! I love the look of the Black Forest as well. Maybe not so much the spruces, but I do love the open pine forests. A sunny day in the Black Forest, looking out over the rocky, pine covered slopes, down towards the sea, that's beautiful. Maybe because that's exactly what things looked like where I grew up in real life. The Black Forest is modelled after my region of Sweden, after all. I do have some plans for a tree farm, actually. Nothing solid yet, but there are plans. I am recording quite far in advance, though (I just finished recording episode 48), so it'll be quite some time before you'll see it show up on screen. But I do like your suggestion, and I will try to prioritize it (among all the other things that are top priority to do in the game! 😆)
@@MvonSchantz I look forward to your new videos Mattias!
@@MvonSchantz I do enjoy the woods myself. Though I'm American, my family has inherited a cottage in Finland in the woods. I wish it were in the pine forest, but it's in the scrubby beech and birch forest. Though, I can't complain about the lake. LOL! I pretend I'm playing Valheim in real life when I visit (which isn't too often considering the distance from the U.S.)
Why are you in the sunken ruins with a wooden club bruv
The simple reason is that mining for copper is a rather time consuming activity. And as this is a full playthrough of the game, I didn't want my viewers to have to sit and watch me mine yet another copper block just to get a bronze maze I'd immediately replace with an iron maze anyway. So for the first crypt, I kept the wooden club. Honestly, though, the club wasn't really the problem. As you saw in the clip, reaching the draugrs was. Swimming through a tunnel meant it hadn't mattered if I had a wooden club or an iron maze - I couldn't have used it anyway. The _armor_ was the reason I died. And I had the same reason for not using bronze armor as I had for not using a bronze maze - I would immediately upgrade it anyway, as soon as I got iron. Stick around and follow the full series, and you'll see how we solve this in the next episode! 😆
The Stagbreaker, works great in crypts and burial chambers. Area of effective damage
you have a lot to learn
That is, fortunately, very true. Life would be quite boring otherwise! Though I guess you refer to something specific in this episode. In terms of Valheim knowledge, I have an academic background in AI, I have worked a bit over 30 years as a professional software developer, and during that time I've dabbled in game development in my spare time. I've also studied the Valheim code base quite extensively. I believe I have a fair amount of knowledge of the game mechanics. Or, maybe you were referring to skill rather than knowledge. If that's the case, I wholeheartedly agree with you. Like I said in the first episode of the series, I'm not much of a gamer. I lack in skill, coordination, and I play like a coward. But I am having fun, and that is all that matters!
@@MvonSchantz yes its was not relly precise 😂 i mean skill and experience in valheim 😅
*Experience...* I have 600 hours in Valheim according to Steam, so it's not a lot, but it's at least more than zero. *Skill...* Well, I'm just notoriously bad at coordination and such. I doubt I'll ever get better, though, so I suppose we'll just have to make the best of the situation! Then again, watching someone fail can be quite amusing, too... I'm just saying - stick around, and watch out for episode 39!😆
@@MvonSchantz i will
nice base. I've never been able to fully complete an actual base. Looking at your base gave me ideas on what I should do with mine. Thanks
Thank you! Glad I could be of some inspiration to you! But I guess a base is never really finished - it's eternally a work in progress. Then again, I think building is so much fun in this game, so that's not a bad thing!
Thankyou for a relaxed gameplay ❤
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@@MvonSchantz i bought the game when it was released back in 2021, enjoying ever since.
@@AjayRaj-vz2fz Same here! It's a pretty good game, isn't it? I never finished it, though - I always ended up having too much fun building in the Meadows to progress much further. Having you and other people watching my playthrough is a great incentive to keep playing!
@@MvonSchantz iam on the same boat as you , I keep making new builds in meadows and Black Forest ..
I love your videos
Your voice fits perfectly for this game
Thank you! That means a lot to me to hear you say. If there's anything I'm feeling unsecure about in my videos, it's my voice work. I'm glad you enjoy it!
This being the first episode of my first TH-cam series ever, you can expect the quality to be slightly less than optimal. Please don't judge the series on the first episode alone! 😊 By that I mean: feel free to watch one of the later episodes as well, to see if the series has improved.
Great video, keep on the awesome work🔥💪
Thank you! I will try my best! I just recorded episode 34, so there are a few episodes in the pipeline, at the very least.
Thats insane
That's Valheim for you! The video is of course synthetic, to prove a point: no matter how much iron you have, it will not be enough. You think it's enough, but it's not!
