Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Tips and Tricks -- How to Streamline Your Experience with the Push of a Button
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a complicated car with myriad options to dial in the experience that you want, but getting there is actually easier than you might think. Yes, there are multiple overlapping menus and options that can conflict with each other and prove quite frustrating, but once you understand a few key functions, you can access most of what you would ever want with the simple push of a button on the steering wheel. The menu bloat goes away once you've learned how to program and use those buttons. You can completely change the driving experience on the fly without even looking down at the menu screens or even at the wheel.
Also, two of the most popular functions, the NGB mode and the Launch Control, don't seem to be well understood -- at least by many of the TH-camrs who have reviewed the car. The two modes don't work the way that they're sometimes being described, and contrary to what some people have said, they don't' work together (at least in terms of the buttons themselves). So it's important to understand how and when they actually function. Yet once you've understood a few basic concepts and have programmed the settings that you need into the buttons on the wheel, you can access them quickly and easily without ever seeing the dreaded "Conditions Not Met" warning box.
As will become abundantly clear if you watch the video, I'm not a professional TH-camr and this is very much an amateur video. You won't even see my face, because I don't particularly enjoy looking at it, so you probably won't either. What you will see is all of the the controls and how they work (or don't work) together. At the end, hopefully you'll have a clearer understanding of how you can turn the otherwise daunting experience of being behind the wheel of an Ioniq 5 N into something that's simpler but still just as enjoyable -- in fact, it's even more enjoyable once you let all the options and menus stay in the background where they belong.

John Carpenter & his band performing Halloween at the Myth in Maplewood, MN. The sound at the Myth was boomier and muddier than at the Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee, and it overloads the microphone several times so there are bursts of noise, but I do not have good enough tools to reduce that without harming the music itself, so I left it in. Carpenter introducing the band and launching into "Distant Dream." The biggest disappointment with the front row is that Carpenter's music stand blocked the view of him for people in the center seats. But he knew that, and he kept looking around it and waving at us.
Great video, and thanks, you managed to help fix a problem I couldn't figure out relating to accessing Custom 2. Thank you!
Because you're not a TH-camr and you explicitly recommended to not like and subscribe, I just liked and subscribed. :D What is Hyundai's OTA experience like? Has there been any mention of them doing a UI clean-up to make the settings / configurations easier to set-up?
@@Alb3rn- There was an OTA update shortly after I bought mine that pushed out automatically. I haven't noticed one since, but since it happens in the background, I should probably double check on that. Interface updates are certainly a possibility.
Very helpful video, thanks for taking the time to help the community. One thing I found helpful that I may add. If you press the HDA button /O\ it toggles ON/OFF the HDA, but you can also long press it to toggle ON /OFF lane keep assist.
Hello! This was great to watch last night after collecting my car. Clearly I need to spend some time playing and getting use to the menus and controls - time being the key word! I do have questions please if you can help. Driver Assistance - one very useful tip i picked up from you is to show speed limit but without the annoying sound! The other which I hate is the lane keeping assist! Is there anyway of permanently turning it off or as a minimum having a shortcut to the menu to turn it off please. Equally is there a way to keep the speed limit set to just for info without the sound permanently/short cut? In my Audi RS 4 I am able to set it in my favourites - so still annoying but 2 clicks on every start but then I'm good to go. Thanking you in advance 😊
The lane assist is easy to shut off. I'm at work right now, so my car's at home, but it's under one of the sub-menus that I show at 8:50 or so -- the Driving Safety one. So go Driver Assistance/Driving Convenience, and there are your options. You'll see it switched off in the video, Driving Lane Change Assist. That was the first thing that I shut off while I was still at the dealer, and it's never been on since then. There's also an overlapping Lane Safety Selection under Driving Safety, which I also have off (the two may be connected so that turning off the one turns off the other). As far as the speed limit warning sounds go, I don't get any with the way that I have it set in the video. But I've got the U.S. version of the car -- if you're in Canada or the E.U., the sounds may be on by default and not easy to shut off. I'm not sure how to do it permanently in that case.
Stephen thanks so much. I did spot on the video it was already off which is why I thought you had cracked it! As you have mentioned I am in the UK and these damn laws return the warnings to default especially on the newer cars! Thanks for the prompt response though much appreciated.👍🏼
@@HD-jv6tr Sorry I can't help! It's weird, because the U.S. version drops many options that are available elsewhere like the parking assist, heads-up display, and moon roof. On the other hand, we can shut off most of the nannies easily!
Thank you for this video, it helped me a lot when I got my N. Not pretty sure if you said it, but if you activate LC (all conditions ✅) and you want to add NGB, itˋs already active, when you set it to high grip, otherwise NGB is off as far as I know. Am I right?
No, I didn't mention that in the video, but yes, you're correct, NGB is only active with launch control if the grip is set to high. It's going to soften the launch when you don't have maximum grip anyway, so it makes sense that they don't give the full 641 for that.
Hi Steven I have tried to make LC work and i can't i try almost everything nut something that i'm not doing is preventing me to make it works. Can you make a video with the options on a costom mode to make it able to use LC? I really apreciate your info. Kind regards
Launch control should work on the standard N mode out of the box, with no changes to it (assuming you have enough battery charge remaining, of course). The custom N mode that I use for launches is identical to that one except for the fact that I have the ignition sounds active. It won't work with my other custom N mode where I softened the suspension and the ESC for highway/rough road driving. Select the standard N mode, activate launch control via the menu, put it in drive, and then press down the brake pedal first and then the accelerator. You should see the launch control box. There's also a video from Hyundai that shows how it works. Let me know if you're still having issues, and I'll see if I can create something for you.
Mate, you say you are not a TH-camr, but you are a natural! Thanks for the video, my N is on its way in late Jan. 😉
There's a lot of stuff that I've learned since then, too. One of the big ones is that you can rearrange all of the icons and panels on the display screen to suit your tastes. The Hyundai channel has a video about that. Just long press and hold, and you can drag them around. I still keep finding out more and more about it. Have fun with yours!
@ that sounds intuitive actually. Same behaviour on my phone and the wife’s iX1. 😉
@@Pilch9Absolutely. But it's not necessarily something that you think of trying on an infotainment system.
@@cabal3747out of curiosity, can you drag down from the top edge or one of the side edges? I thought I see a little thin white line on the top?
@@Pilch9 Normally, you scroll left to right, not top to bottom.
Hi, great video, is this your daily driver? I would be interested to know how much it is averaging in kw/mile consumption.
@@bartdecroo5823 I drive a company vehicle for work, so it isn't a daily driver. I put 25,000-30,000 miles a year on my company car, but only 2,000-3,000 a year on my personal car, and since those personal miles tend to be hard-driven ones, I'll never provide useful data for most other users. Sorry!
Two days into ownership and you just saved my sanity! Thank you!
Glad to hear it! Enjoy! There's way more that I didn't even realize when I made this video, like the fact that you can rearrange the icons and panels on the screen (just hold down and drag). Keep playing around with it!
I wanted to get one, but it will be out of my price range. Even leasing it is currently hi now next year will be worst
It's not cheap any way that you look at it! I had to do some real soul searching before I pulled the trigger on mine.
THANK YOU!! 🙏🏼
Thanks for the great video! I'm a former Focus ST owner and current Soultronic Orange 5N owner! I love the e-shift feature, especially when I'm in the twisties! I've had the N almost 3 months now and the smile it gives me hasn't gotten smaller - if anything, it's gotten bigger as I've gotten better at driving the car!
Thank you! I'm a former Focus ST owner who traded it in for a Focus RS. Now I'm a former Focus RS owner with a Soultronic Orange 5 N. So I feel you! And yeah, I love using the e-shift on winding roads. Is it the same thing as a real manual? Of course not, but for that matter, neither is a paddle-shifted DCT. But I still think in terms of gears when I'm going into corners and coming out of them, so the "fake" transmission ends up feeling more natural to me.
@@cabal3747 Hahaha, yes! The Focus RS was on my short list for many years but never got one. I ended up with a Golf R and then a Veloster N (both auto) after my ST. I recently got a GR86 (M6). Loved it in the twisties but didn't like it anywhere else so I sold it and then fell in love with the 5N. Do you ever play with the torque distribution? I'll occasionally but 80% in the rear wheels but since I can't use e-shift with that function, it takes some of the fun away. What about the N-Drift mode? I need to play with that a bit too once I find some good roads for it.
@@zigmoto360 It's already rear-biased at 50/50 since the rear motor is more powerful than the front motor, and that's been good enough for me. It's squirrelly enough at 50/50. No drift mode for me, since I just bought winter tires and that was expensive enough. Don't want to shell out for new summer tires yet!
@@cabal3747 Yes, I guess you get a seasonal drift mode with the snow/ice!
@@zigmoto360 That's what I did with my RS. Cup 2s weren't any cheaper, but after I got winter wheels with Blizzaks on them, I took it out in safe spaces like parking lots and went to town in drift mode. With the Sottozero 3s that I just put on the 5 N, I just might do the same thing (albeit a little more cautiously, given the weight of the car).
Thank you for posting this! Very helpful.
Really helpful
Thanks for this video, it was very informative on the actual usage of the vehicles features. Most reviews gloss over it and then do testing in very obviously wrong settings for their goal (like doing 0-60 tests but leaving the DCT sim on). But also... "Here is a way to make the settings on your car simple". . . 46 minute long tutorial . . . 😮 One question I had is that the torque/power distribution is about 37/63 by default so in the menu if you pick 50/50 does that give you full power from each motor or does that just limit the rear to only output 166kw like the front motor actually making it 50/50 but total 332kw instead of the usual 448?
Like I said, I'm not a professional TH-camr, and that was off the cuff, not scripted. But the idea was to make using the car simpler on a daily basis, not to make a simple video. I could have just spent a few minutes explaining my own preferred settings and leaving it at that, but I wanted to help give people the tools to find the settings that work for them, and that takes time. Once you figure it out and dial your own settings in, Bob's your uncle. When torque distribution is off, it defaults to 50/50, and yes, that's actually full power to each motor, so it's not really 50/50. That is one setting that's pretty confusing. But it's noticeably rear biased at "50/50," and she'll squirrel even when you're just pulling into traffic. It's too bad that they didn't label that one more clearly.
팁을 공유해주셔서 감사합니다
I plan to purchase an Ionic 5N and I am sure to be referring to this video when that time comes. It seems rather complicated, but I like being able to make my pre-sets and access them so that I don't really need to bother with all the decisions every time I drive.
Well, it is and it isn't complicated. There is a learning curve, and it really does pay off if you take the time to sit down and just play with all the menus with the manuals at your side to look anything up if necessary. But no, you don't have to bother making any decisions every time that you drive, other than which way you want to have fun that day. You never even have to take your hands off the wheel. I focused on drive modes and functions here, but you can even set up a media button on the wheel to access whatever you want -- AM, FM, Sirius, Bluetooth audio, USB audio, the various ambient sounds, etc. And that's not even getting into the voice commands that you can use. In practice, you don't have to access the infotainment screen very much while driving.
This is a really useful video, thanks for taking the time to record it. I have just ordered a 5N and was looking for a video like this to explain how to set the car up when it arrives.
I liked anyway, lol!
Thanks! It certainly doesn't hurt. I just didn't want to sound like the standard TH-cam video begging everyone to like and subscribe.
Hi cabal, Big thanks for this video👍! You helped me 3 weeks ago by explaining me, how to get N mode on the Blue button so I can use custom 1 and 2 on left N button. Thank you🙏! Did I get it right with prerequisite for LC: ESC Off/Sport, engine sport+ then push lc Button in the N menu -> green LC sign on display? Is this with NGB by default, so 650ps full power? Sorry, my english isn ´t good enough to be sure that I got. it. What I dont understand is why Hyundai themself give data for 0-100 in 3.5sec (No NGB) and 3.4sec with NGB. Some other guys told, press NGB right after lc.
@@MotionBerlinR I don't know what to tell you there, but Hyundai themselves aren't exactly clear about it. And they've changed what their website says about it, too. But it says right in the manual that the two can't be activated together, and in the menus on the car, too. It wouldn't make any sense for them to have launch control that DIDN'T use all the horsepower -- why bother if it didn't? But yes, you're right about the settings. If you've got the standard N mode on, it meets the conditions. If NGB is on, it won't activate Launch Control. But if Launch Control really is on, you're getting the extra horsepower.
Great video, and good to see how someone else has figured it out, for themselves at least. I've fiddled with the customizations following some guidance from the IONIQ 5N facebook groups. LEFT N: Custom 1/2 RIGHT N: N e-Shift on/off
Yes, I think that's probably the best way to do it to give most drivers the most flexibility. I can see some other possibilities if someone didn't want to change anything about the standard N mode. Then you might want to lock one of the buttons into Launch Control or maybe even set both of them to control the lap timers. But for the average daily driver, I think that the way that we both do it is probably best. Makes the car more of a chameleon.
Great video. One thing I'm consistently confused about: what exactly is "standard N mode"? Is that all drive options set to Sport+ ?
@@brandonjackson9047 Pretty much, yes. Everything is set to Sport+ except for the ESC, which stays at Sport. (Sport+ with ESC shuts it off completely, and it won't do that without warning you first.) It also has the sounds off by default unless you turn them on globally, and then it affects all the modes.
Since I naturally tended to focus on my own settings as an example, I should point out that's just a template and you can use those buttons to do whatever you want. Let's say that you really don't care about the fake sounds or the fake transmission, and you're really focused on the raw performance. If you're also happy with the standard N mode, then since that's still accessible with a long press, set one of the N buttons to Launch Control and the other to the Lap Timer. Or whatever makes sense to you. It's also worth noting that you can set the "star" button on the wheel to bring up the standard N mode, if the long press is too fiddly for you. And none of that is getting into the programmability of the other buttons on the wheel, like the Mode button on the right (not the Driving Mode button on the left) where you can set it to toggle between just about any audio mode that you can think of, and then some. As few or as many as you like. The sky's the limit.
Excellent video. Maybe the best I have seen discussing how to use some of the functionality available.
Thanks! There's plenty more that I didn't touch on, but I wanted to focus on the idea of getting away from the menus and using the buttons. And I even left some things out in that regard!
@cabal3747 great video for someone seriously considering the car. Great to see exactly how an owner would use and configure it day to day
And yes, I did say "not well misunderstood" when I meant "not well understood." Sorry.
Truer words were never spoken
Love the physical media defusers! Plus Im sure the all Vandersteen setup sounds wonderful. I previously had 4 VSM1’s, Quatro’s and a VCC5 as well! Looks like a fantastic room to enjoy movies and TV alike. Congratulations.
Aw, God! It's "Eddie"! The worst G.P.P. of them all! Don't tell the nubs, though: They'll confuse Eddie for A.I. and actually try to make that in the Real World! But if they do (at great expense and expenditure!), it'll all end in tears, I know it wahahahahaha!
When my trailblazer has a cameo in the background
Hey! Awesome video!! Do you have the Halloween theme by its self?
Sorry, no. The only complete songs that I have are Distant Dream, Purgatory & Christine. The only other footage that I shot is snippets, and I used all that I had in this compilation. I never intended to record anything while I was there, so it was all kind of an afterthought. Did you see the other three that I uploaded?
Did you get anything else from the set? Post it if you can!
A couple more full songs, and a few smaller clips. Nightmarishly slow connection at the hotel, though, so I will have to do it later.
Plus, please forgive the less than stellar videography, but I originally did not intend to record anything, and I was busy enjoying the concert! Plus, being in the front row center stage was actually a problem, as you can see, because the music stand kept blocking the view of him. He knew it, too. That is why he kept peeking around it at the people in the front row and waving at us.
+cabal3747 No problem, I'm just happy that you recorded this one and got it up so quickly. Pretty impressive. The lead guitarist was absolutely incredible.
With his genes, he should have been incredible! Well, I am glad that someone likes these. I am working on uploading Purgatory and the theme from Christine right now. Those were the only other two complete recordings that I have. Otherwise, just snippets. I started recording when he came out for the encore and got the beginning of Prince of Darkness, but I did not keep recording. I will post a link here when the other two are up.
+cabal3747 Nice, I'll be on the lookout. I had a wonderful time at this show.
