The story of the Costa Smeralda started during the early 1960s when just like in a fairy story, a prince from faraway fell in love with a fabulous land.

In a short time the Costa Smeralda thus became the buen retiro of the international jet set. Actors, actresses, models, nobles, financiers, industrialists, sportsmen and rock stars discovered this magnificent slice of Gallura and soon made it end up on the glossy covers of magazines all over the world.

Devotees of the Aga Khan bristle when Western media describe his life as lavish and extravagant. In a 1979 interview, he himself countered such a characterization: “I have stayed away from things which did not seem to me to be good sense, where it was affluence for the sake of affluence.”
