    Your sessions sound quite fun, but I must admit I really don't like the AI art. There are tons of great artists that specialize on TTRPG assets and fantasy character portraits.

    • @thechatteringclown
      @thechatteringclown 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure, but it either costs half your salary or more each month to pay their fees (on top of the time it takes to actually get the thing you ordered), or you have to crip some from the Internet for free and hope they'll fit what you had in mind (which they won't 99% of the time). I do understand the sentiment, but as a DM myself, using AI to create exactly what you imagined can be very tempting.

    • @WallySketch

      @@thechatteringclown As a DM and a professional artist I can assure you I understand when people use AI for their home game. It's not that different from taking random pictures on google image. It's fair use. I do have mixed feeling about using AI on podcasts or youtube. And personally I think it's not ok for anything monetized (unless the AI is trained on non copyrighted material only). Depending on how much you ask an artist it might cost a lot (it's their job after all they have to make a living). But just 4 or 5 character portraits for your d&d game ? It might cost something like 100~400€/$ for most artists and it's only once per campaign. I wouldn't do that for a one shot or short adventure, but if you're going on a long standing campaign for more than 1 year, why not.

    Love your positivity, but this aged really bad, since people do have the book now and have reviewed it, a lot of the issues aren’t fixed and they created more problems than they fixed. But yeah, it’s why I turned my back on wotc even before the ogl situation, and I personally don’t agree with supporting them financially or making content that isn’t critical of them. Still, love your positive take and wish it was true, just time told us it wasn’t and we shouldn’t expect it from a company that has done all they’ve done to the fans, system, employees, and more 💯💜

    I truly do miss being able to play in person, it's just SO hard to find a group, especially one that isn't insufferable or is actually consistent and there's so many more variables that make it feel impossible unless you're paying a DM to play (which I would gladly do if I wasn't dirt poor) I'm in a group online and 1 person claims she can't use the sheet because she hates math and doesn't understand it all, yet taught herself discord avrae code to circumnavigate the problem, which is INSANE to me that someone would opt to learn fucking code and have to type in a ridiculous line every single time you want to do anything like !c "firebolt" +1D6 -t AM1 adv or some crazy shit like that instead of just learning how the game works mechanically to begin with. I was the stick in the mud in that group too, until it got too frustrating and I just had to learn the fucking code too. I want to just sit at a table with my bag of dice, pencil and paper and mini, god dammit. This is just the way of things sadly, like most things, it's only getting worse.

  • @theJmanStriketh
    @theJmanStriketh 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I also enjoy paper character sheets. For something like 5e that should be alright, but if you want a digital medium you can also make your own in whatever web-based spreadsheets you have available. On using the system, but not buying the books. You can do that, and it's reasonable if you stay in OGL/SRD content. But for me, ethically, if I'm sticking it to a company then I can take my whole game to a different system, or use they systems I already own (or can get cheap from a used book store). Even if 5e/2024 is a great system, there are a lot of other systems that are just as good, if not better tailored to the type of game you and your group might want to play. Support those people that are making the game you want to play and treating you well, rather than saying "but it has to be DnD," it doesn't.

  • @SageMasterRPG
    @SageMasterRPG 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    At level 0 they could not have any skill development for a skill based system. So it could work for DnD and the clones. But for systems like Rolemaster that would be a kiss of death. In Rolemaster, any skill without a rank of development is automatically at -25.

    I pay for D&D Beyond because * my players get access to everything without paying a cent * character generation is good for new players * calculating stats with all information is easier * Whenever i buy a book, I download the PDF of the book from a yo ho site. And I gave up on physical books for all uses a long time ago. The problem is that D&D players arent a bunch of math nerds who get excited with finding +1 in an obscure reference. Many players are now here for the roleplay interactions and the rules are painful to work. Your take is a misunderstanding, especially about new players paying.

    I am planning to start a brand new DnD campaign with a new group which I don’t really know good. And to get them interested I’m planning to make a session 0 in a “Spark in a Fate Core” - so this is a mechanic of collective world building with the players which will give them plot hooks right away and will show me, what they want the game to be about.

    DND beyond is easy. Simply put. You talk about making seperate sheets online with hyperlinks, DND beyond does that. The combat encounter maker has an inititive tracker and all your creatures linked in already. And you can easily view your player's character sheets. I dont want to like dndbeyond because of Hasbro and WoTC but, nobody else has a site that does all of this and more wrapped into one.

    I’m about to start DM’ing my first campaign (well, D&D I have run a full Mage: The Awakening campaign and a few World of Darkness mortals one-shots) and started this up to give me some ideas. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that a lot of the suggestions regarding building a world and creating hooks were things I had intuitively done as I started my world building to prepare for the campaign. I think it shows how much I’ve learned as a player from great and (and also the not great) DM’s I’ve personally had and from watching the masters like Matt Mercer and Brennan Lee Mulligan craft their worlds in real time.

      If you're struggling a lot to come up with ideas for the campaign, I really think you should take a look at this book: Tome of Adventure Design It's filled with random tables, and the general idea is to use the results from said random tables in order to create something that at the start might not look like a good idea, but with a little development can be made into something interesting. Besides that, don't expect to be making something as big and great as the works of fantasy of some authors, and even some famous DMs (like Mercer, Colville and Brennan). They dedicate their lives to it. You'd be surprised how much fun players can have with simple ideas, as long as the focus stays on their characters!

    • @rockluisfelipe

    Hey, really enjoyed the video! You mentioned that when you're coming up with a campaign idea you "enjoy to focus on the world and then put the plot in." I was wondering, on the topic of worldbuiliding, do you follow some kind of structure? Or just jot down ideas and develop them further? Once again, great video!

    • @eddie-theRPGguy
      @eddie-theRPGguy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey @CastleSoul, glad you enjoyed the video! TL;DR: I mostly jot down ideas and develop them further, but it is more nuanced than that and there is a lot of improvisation. In the video I did with MacBeth and Karl called "3 Life Long DMs Discuss Why Warhammer Fantasy is an Amazing RPG System" (th-cam.com/video/hcIAOKZsKNM/w-d-xo.html) I do talk a little about my DM style. Now then, time for the long answer. This is a good question, for me I follow a more organic process. That is to say I do not have a template or rigid structure I adhere to. Usually, I'll have an idea for the setting and that will drive what I put in my world. The thing about my style of preparing is I spend a lot of time--while I'm doing other things like chores, exercising, or work--thinking about "what could my players do next". This is because I am very much an improvising DM, which doesn't mean I don't plan, I do, it's just done a lot in my head and only certain things actually get written down. The things I 100% plan-on-paper are encounters and maps--with the exception of battle maps. If we are using minis, then the map is places on grid paper with linking dungeon walls and other props that I have printed from thingiverse.com. I will take pictures of the battle maps for record, but they are not always drawn out ahead of time. Encounters are usually planned out before hand, or if they are improvised I'll grab some monsters that are the appropriate CR--that's a loaded statement--from the book or web, or I'll cook up a monster on the spot and write down their stat block mid session. Some of my players favourite encounters, NPC's, and environmental hazards were all improvised based on what I had been thinking about leading up to the session. I often take lot's of inspiration from media such as, song lyrics, famous speeches, scenes from TV shows or Movies, video/board/or card games, and historical or current events. Take all those influences and mash it together to make something new. Before the campaign starts their is usually a world map, either drawn out, as was my old campaign that we talk about in these videos --> th-cam.com/video/7Hz4wgcWga0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5ns4TCiygijQwG3C (Five Friends Recap a 2 Year Long D&D Campaign); or it's summarized in prose, as was the "As Below, So Above" campaign which will be coming out on my channel starting on September 10th this year. I'll be putting out some videos that talk about that campaign and some of my thoughts and planning process, so watch for those videos coming out soon. This is just to get me going usually, and it comes only after getting people interested with the elevator pitch. Once we are rolling with a campaign, I approach each session differently depending where they are. Sometimes I prepare notes for the session and other times I don't and just improv my way through the session. To give a couple of examples that are not in the video, I'll use the last two one shots I planned and contrast them with the two examples in the video. I'll also talk through my current planning process for a West Marches campaign I am starting up in the fall (to try out the new rule set) in a video soon. Example 1: Santa's Work Shop -- A Christmas one-shot: For this "campaign", it started with the idea "What if Santa was an Illithid, and the elves were all mind controlled and instructed to 'make toys' against their will". And really that was it, The elevator pitch was pretty vague because everyone was just down to play a D&D one shot over the winter holidays. Looking back in our chat about that one-shot, there really wasn't a pitch, all I said was that it would have a clear start-middle-end format (because we had new players who had only played in a couple of session of a long running campaign, so I mostly articulated the differences). And other than saying to make characters from only PHB material and be lvl 5--arbitrary restrictions--that was all I planned until the day of the one-shot. On the day of I wrote a little book that outlines the plot hook (I usually only put one in a one shot, so that we can have a start middle and end in one session, which sounds easier than It is). Again like "As Below, So Above", the world building was done in prose based off the ideas I had over the week leading up to the one-shot. I am looking at those notes as I am writing it's, and its maybe 300~ words (estimated, these notes were hand written). Reading over it again, those prose were the backstory and setting. Then there was another 100 words on the plot hook, the "why they were there". I'm leaving out the details of the one-shot because it had some really dark themes... The rest of what happened in that one-shot was all improvised based on what I had written down in those 400 or so words and what my players wanted to do. The one-shot was about 7 hours, they did finish the story, some died, and the rest ran away from the BBEG, then told on the BBEG to his boss (what a bunch of Karen's), and everyone had a good time :) Example 2: Wetland Adventure -- The underwater temple: For this one-shot, I looked for 20 minutes and I couldn't find any notes, which leads me to think it was all planned in my head. The pitch was you are in this large wetland region (like the Everglades in Florida), Artificers have designed vessels for fast traversal of the river network--they were fan boats basically. They were looking for a temple that was rumoured to hold untold treasure, but there was an evil demon using the temple to slowly fill the land with underwater demons and take over the wetlands. Again it ran for about 7 hours, the party finished, and defeated the BBEG this time, found the treasure and saved the wetlands. Once again, everyone had a good time :) In general a DM needs to try out different methods of prep to learn what works for them. There isn't one right way to DM or prepare a campaign. Everyone has their own styles, and if it works for you and your players are having fun, then however you're doing it you're right! For me, I love improv and dynamic ideas so most of what I plan-on-paper is right before session, because up until that point the ideas are in my head going through different iterations. This has worked for me for a long time now and my players really enjoy my campaigns. That being said, it is not everyone's style, but from conversations with other DMs and my own experience I do think that regardless of how you prep a campaign, setting, background, and plot hook are needed. But that's like my opinion, man.

    • @CastleSoul
      @CastleSoul 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@eddie-theRPGguy Totally cool and valid process! I think that I could learn a few things from that! Specially because it's really easy for me to fall into the Worldbuilding trap, and then end up scrapping it because I never actually FEEL it out at the table, and the ideas live and die on paper. Perhaps trying something a little more simple (but still complex) would be a benefit for me. Thoughts that normally course through my mind when I am prepping for D&D tend to verge on the "I want to make something really unique for the players", and although that isn't a bad thing, it tends to make me frustrated and disinvested in the world. I'll definitely be giving your method a try.

    If you are experienced and your DM bought all of the books on D&D Beyond, if you don’t at least enter your character in there for them, you are a bad player. I am currently in an in person game, I only use paper and I wrote out my entire character while building it. But since my DM had purchased the books, I entered my character into D&D Beyond and I keep it updated so the DM can reference it. if I wasn’t willing to do at least that, I would be disrespecting the amount of effort they are putting into the game.

    To everyone upset about all subclasses starting at level 3: Level 3 in this edition is designed to be the starting point for experienced players. Levels 1 and 2 are only for new players to learn the ropes. Once you've played through them before, according to one of the videos, the book encourages you to skip those levels and start your campaign at Level 3.

You fail to comprehend that a lot of DND peeps been thru this 4 times already... theyre just repeating all the same old mistakes, then say "trust us, you'll love it!". 😂 Also, people are mad they laid off most of the WotC staff for Xmas. RIGHT before they announced this new edition. This is AD&D and 3.5 all over again bro.

    I have the core books through DDB... the interface is a joke and building a character is pretty clunky tbh. I use FVTT right now but have used FGU, FG and Roll20 and they are much easier to use. I have the books on DDB in order to import into the VTT of choice only.

    As a DM I love that all my stuff is in one easy location. I pay and share with my players so it cost them nothing. I love the encounter builder and the ability to see my player characters without keeping them away from the player. The monthly subscription is cheap for the entertainment. I also find it way faster to find information with a search engine that is built right into the system. I have played D&D sense the late 80s and most players struggle with the rules and charecter progression. One more reason for the DM to have access to the charecter sheets.

    As a DM. DDBeyonds is worth it. My player don’t have to pay a single cent to manage 6 characters. It helps me out a ton because I don’t have to go and check new characters against the rules. It helps my players see all “legal” option. If there was a smoother free option I’d be using it.

    Name a hobby that costs absolutely nothing. What, walking? Don't say you don't like dnd beyond, just say your cheap and you'd rather spend the money on another sword you'll never use. Hobbies cost money and if you're a player, you have the cheapest entry level costs. Try DM'ing for a new group that doesn't own any books. You'll be glad dnd beyond exists then. I've bought well over 2.5k minis, most of the books, terrain, TV for the table (maps), dice, screen, condition rings etc etc. So don't whine about the cost of playing D&D. Dms are the ones who get the shaft. You can technically play dnd (as a player) for free with the srd stuff online. If you want more options then you can pay up. I'll never understand this generation's entitlement. "I should be able to play for free and have access to everything without spending a dime" You sound like a spoiled child when you say "That's not fair" Gimme a break and get off my lawn youngster. Pirating content is a shitty thing to do. Support the artists and game designers. If you whine about WotC and have a 401k or use a cellphone or eat chicken or wear adidas or nike then you are a HYPOCRITE. Hasbro is far less terrible than 95% of the big corporations out there. Stop being cheap, whiney children and grow up.

    There are a few things to unpack here. First, it's clear you're not a user of D&D Beyond without even mentioning it, which I think makes it unfair to criticize it in this way. Second, WotC/Hasbro definitely makes egregious monetization decisions, but if you have a problem with it, then don't play D&D. The answer isn't to just utilize licensed material that is illegally published online, it's to play other systems. Popularize their competitors, because players continuously using 5e content regardless of their negative criticisms means Hasbro/WotC can continue to rest on their laurels with majority market share. With that out of the way, let's address the D&D Beyond misconceptions. First, D&D Beyond is a fantastic tool, and it doesn't take away from the players ability to learn their character at all. Some people are dogmatic and are unwilling to admit that pen and paper and using physical copies of books is a preference and not superior in some way. If you're worried about new players not understanding their character, then forcing them to build a character with pen and paper won't magically make them comprehend the variability of each class. If anything, it creates a roadblock because it takes more effort, especially for caster classes. If you want to make sure your players are learning, then simply start them off at level 1, walk them through the game and their options, and when they level up, make sure they understand what they're unlocking and address any questions they have. Streamlining the learning process for new players will only improve the odds of them sticking with it than just throwing the book at them. Second, D&D Beyond is not as egregiously expensive as you're making it out to be. I don't know if you're intentionally doing this, or simply lack the understanding, but if a group is playing together, not everyone using the character builder is required to buy the digital books. For example, I DM from time to time, and I own all the rulebooks on D&D Beyond. I pay for the books, and then I pay $5.99/mo and share those books with everyone that I campaign with. I can do this as a player, too. This allows other players to utilize all the options in the character builder (well, 95% of them, I don't pay for most adventure modules), as well as allows other DMs to access the books through D&D Beyond because I've shared it with them. I even maintain campaign groups on there so I can share these features with people I'm not even actively playing with. Tl;dr: if you have a problem with WotC pricing, play other systems, especially ones that make all their character-building content digitally available for free, like PF2e. If you think pen and paper makes learning the game, you're probably just dogmatic. D&D beyond doesn't require everyone to purchase every book to utilize it.

      why does dndbeyond have to be a subscription? Why does a player(s group) have to buy an entire dndbeyond book instead of the item they want out of that book (which used to be an option mind you)? You can buy a fully functioning FantasyGround for 5e (50 bucks for the system, and 25$ for each book = 125$ total) for 2 years of dndbeyond, and you STILL have to maintain the subscription and need your players to have an account with dndbeyond.

      @@CathrineMacNiel DnD Beyond doesn’t have to be a subscription, that is the model they chose to use. Same concept parted out items/features. It’s a business decision. Yes, you can buy a fully functioning FG license and a book, and share that with your players. However, what you can’t do with FG is access content you don’t own while the person sharing it with you is offline. FG sells a product, not a service. FG leverages a customers existing hardware to run their app. DnD Beyond is a service. They offer servers which host all your content, and players can access shared content even if the person sharing it is not available. FG customers can’t access their content via mobile (for now at least), whereas DnD Beyond customers can. If FG is more appealing to a group, then they can use FG. But that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have cons that make DnD Beyond more appealing. Also, seems kinda weird to focus only on pricing when I had already stated that WotC is pretty greedy when it comes to pricing.
