Seiza has absolutely nothing to do with Ninjutsu or Ninpo. It was implemented during Edo period, because it numbs the feet in prolonged kneeling. Intent probably to humiliate people and make attacks harder. So it's really ridiculous, but unfortunately custom today in Japan and most japanese Martial Arts. before Edo, most people were sitting cross legged. Seiza is really unhealthy for the feet.

Was he or any one from ninpo still teaching the police or military as Krav-Maga or Gracie Jiu Jitsu does?? Thank you for sharing your experience. I was around when these splits were going on but sadly not a part of the Ninja community. Politics has destroyed the community. You may even say Hatsumi started the downfall by giving out Dans to just about everyone, while other Japanese schools were largely traditional and limited to 10. When you are low level you leave a school and likely seek another style because you are not getting what you wanted when you first started. However, when you are a high rank instructor you tend to be invested and rather than join another style you end up creating your own. Where any of these high rank Ninjas go wrong is when they try to create their own lineage when in fact their skills go back to hatsumi. I'd rather them just admit that, "This is OUR way of doing things, but THAT guy over there was our first teacher. The Elephant in the Room is did Hatsumi make it all up? Who knows? Now we have lots of other people starting their own Ryu and others calling themselves Soke who never achieved any solid rank from Hatsumi. I have softened over the years and just don't care: Fake or not, the best teacher is the one I can learn from and the one that can teach me to improve. I don't care where you got a technique from as long as it works.

    • @EmpireDojo

Thanks for sharing. I feel the same way. All martial arts, particularly any Ryu started from someone making it up. I don't care where it comes from as long as it works to my benefit in a match.

Couple years late but this video just came across my feed this evening. I started in Genbukan 15 years ago, went for a couple years then drifted off a little and TRIED really hard to get back into going regularly over the next couple years after that but ultimately fell off due to hectic life occurrences and also the teacher just wasn't good. I read the list of rules when I officially gained membership and they were exactly what you read off, verbatim. I knew it was all ridiculous but was just so woowed by the ninpo system and was so often told over and over again that they were the only true ninpo school and the only other ninpo org (Bujikan) was just "sloppy" and whatever else, that I figured it was worth tolerating their rigidness and excessive rules in order to excel in this martial art. Man looking back now this is low-key cult material. You are so right about anyone telling you you can't learn or train elsewhere being a red flag. I grew up in an actual cult and they ALL work like that.

Thanks to Professor Peter Goldsbury for the English translation below. This is a genealogy newly put together by Takamatsu Toshitsugu, who made use of (took advantage of) the popularity of written materials on ninjutsu after the Taishō era. The transmission is said to be based on oral teachings of Toda Shinryūken. Toda Shinryūken (Isshinsai) died in Meiji 13 at the age of 73. Takamatsu’s birth took place four years later. According to this lineage, the ryū originated with a person named Ikai, separated from Hakuun Dōshi of Hakuun-ryū in the Yōwa era, became the Kōga and Iga-ryū of ninjutsu, passed through the lineage of Momochi Sandayū, entered the Natori-ryū of Kishū domain, and from Toda Nobutsuna onwards came to be passed down by the Toda clan. However, this genealogy refers to a variety of traditions and oral teachings, there are many points where it has added embellishments, it has made people whose real existence is based on written records older than is actually the case, and so it is a product of very considerable labor."

My dear Friend, Genbukans first rule is about spiritual refinment, and any true Ninjitsu organisation is all about spiritual refinement, and spiritual refinement is not possible with things you do. I do not have anything against you and not blaming you or accuse you in any way, but by speaking about other organisations this way you harm yourself not others. Life goes just about the same way with you having your opinions or not. America is culturally very different from Japan, And the Organisation is Japanes therefore you should respect its ways an orders. My advice, leave it all othervice your ambition and seemingly wanting to get to the truth will simply harm you in a way that the essence of martial way will simply become obsolete for you, through your own decisions and behaviours.

It's not going to make a difference if the bully is not named. And Tanemura Sensei might not know about it. In Japan, they do not like things going public about scandalous individuals in their circles, which means the scandalous individuals might be behaving sycophantic around Tanemura and the Japanese, and an absolute terror stateside. There is also a reason why they say to not train with other ninpo organizations. It is not a red flag whatsoever with the Japanese. Japan does not treat a dojo as transactional places to acquire techniques. That's an American mindset, and they don't have to respond to it, because it's their culture. Even Hatsumi has talked about this, as well as the Japanese Soke in the Bujinkan.

In dealing with Tanemura Shoto in the past it is my opinion that he has *serious* mental issues and a personality disorder. This can only compounded now by dementia in his age. It appears he enforces this on his students, who spread his behavior by acting on his behalf. Looking carefully he is running what I would call a "cult", worshipping him and his ego. I am sure there are folks that are directly linked to him that can support these allegations.
