Capturing the Ocean's Dual Nature: From Furious Swells to Tranquil Calm – Photography Tips"
In this week's Landscape Photography vlog I have a week to remember.
I start the week photographing large swells after a storm front hit the coastline. 4 days later I do the exact opposite, photographing sunrise over a tranquil bay with little or no swell at all.
I discuss photography techniques for capturing both type of ocean conditions and end up with beautiful images from all my outings.

I still can’t find to the point info on setting up a long exposure…
Nice work mate. Just the video work is sensational. The Fingal Bay location was awesome & you nailed those shots also 👏👍
Very nice video. Those are some stunning photographs.
Jimmy, thanks for checking it out and your feedback, mate 👍
Love your work Col. beautiful variety. Thinking the shots with the shrubs in the foreground were my favs 👏🕺🏽👏
Thanks Gary 😊 It was so nice to find a new location and compositions. Have a great week, mate 👍
Well done mate. Another cracking location with some really beautiful sunrises. Loved your wave shoot too, especially the black & whites. Keep up the good work.
Geoff, thank you, mate. Yep, Fingal is a great location, and the waves just presented at the right time. Have a great weekend, mate. 🙂
Epic images of Wamby and the tranquillity of Fingal Colin! Again you've given me for for thought regarding settings. I tend to use a much lower f stop and shutter speed for waves to create an explosion............I'll certainly experiment with a faster shutter having seen your waves. Another great blog Colin, thanks 👍👍
Thanks, David. I appreciate your feedback, mate. Yep, I try both, but the faster really freezes the water droplets, etc. I guess it also depends on available light etc. Have a great weekend mate 👍
another great video and shots loved it cant wait for more
Bryan, thank you, mate!
Magnificent images mate. Great video. Take care…….!
Brad ,Thank you, my friend. Always good to capture something different 👌
Love your work Colin! Great video! 😀
@Chris_2023_ thank you for watching and your kind feedback 😊 🙏
Glad you played it safe. Fantastic waves though, love these images where power of waves shows
Laurel, thank you 😊 🙏 I love the power of the ocean, scary and exciting!

Really nice images Colin . I have subscribed. 👏👏
Thank you so much and welcome 🙏 More content coming soon!
Great stuff mate. You weren't wrong about that sky, amazing! Love the perspective from inside the cave with that brilliant sky
@Troopy... yeah, mate, easily the best I have seen 👍 Awesome location as well.
That's a real nice location mate. Those early morning colours over the glassed-out bay..just magic
Once I passed it, every day going to work. Not now 🤣🤣
Very nice mate. That's the great thing about Lighthouses. Beautiful sandstone structures from times past that are always in stunning locations 👌
Yeah, mate, I can't get enough of them. The workmanship and history, I love it.
Nice work mate. Also liked the images from your trip up north 👌
Thanks mate. Yep 1770 was a hidden gem 💎 as well.
Just subscribed, great photos, thanks Colin!
Thanks, Paul, and welcome, mate! More content soon ✨️
Amazing images Colin, bit of an epic location.
Certainly, it is Dennis! As soon as I saw the forecast, I knew it would suit. I didn't expect it to be that good, though 🤣
Lovely photos Colin. Thank you.
Vivienne, thank you for your kind feedback 😊 🙏
Wow!!! Just amazing sunrise and photo site! What date was the sunrise in this position over the ocean?
Thank you so much. It was Thursday 25th July
What an incredible sunrise Colin, every time I've been to Caves with the crew it's been rubbish. In all the trips there its been either wet, 100% cloud or 100% no cloud 😂. You were so lucky not to have company with other photographers. Those panos were epic!! Well done mate. 👏👏
Thanks Dave 😊 It was a last-minute decision, and I couldn't believe my luck. No one else was there. Even no Instagramers or selfie queen's 🤣🤣 Thank you for your feedback, mate 👍
amazing photography so lucky you you seen it happen blown away again great video
Bryan, thank you for your kind words 🙏 It really was a morning. I will remember forever. All the best, mate 👍
Very good. Nice to see how you edited the pano.
Keith, thanks for watching and your feedback 😊
Fantastic images Colin, I was a little surprised though that you didn't turn around when out the front of the cave as well with the light that was highlighting its beautiful arch in the cliff face
Robert, yes, I saw that when I was editing the video. It's so frantic filming, photos and the Panoramas were my goal I just missed it. Maybe next time 😆 Have a great week!
Wow, what an amazing day. Being to this cave 3 times without cloud as good as this. Well done, and thanks for the advice
Tony, thanks for watching, mate 👍 I must admit it was very out of the ordinary. All the best 👍
Wowww what a morning you had. Fantastic images from amazing skies 📸👌
Thank you, Judy 😊 I always appreciate your feedback and support!
Fantastic photography Colin you really captured the moment.
Jason, thank you for your kind feedback 😊

Loved that Black and white one Colin first. The rest were so nice but that Black and White starburst one was awesome.
A great video Colin! Thanks for your comments and shooting info, always appreciated. I find that gives me something else to consider when I'm out for sunrise. That oyster shack is in a perfect position when sun is north in the winter months. I have captured it once on a very foggy morning........it looked like it was floating in mid air. Cheers Dave 😁
Thanks Dave 😊 Oh I can just imagine how good it would look with some fog. I am never sure whether to include shooting info or not as some like it, others not, so I appreciate your comment. Have a great weekend, mate 👍
Wow made this spot shine Col. Truly magic with that background with the extra boom of reflections. Cool twist with the zoom 👏🕺🏽👏
Thanks for watching Gary. I guess it helps being able to pick and choose what day I go there 😆 Some lovely still conditions, though 👌 Have a great weekend!
Great video. I'm just down the road at Point Clare and would love some tips on predicting the weather for good sunrise conditions and do you do any workshops?
Hi James Thank you so much. I don't do workshops. However, check out an app called Windy ( free version). There is a cloud forecast section that's super accurate. I watch it days in advance and look for high cloud mornings with little or no mid - and low level cloud. It's my go to for great sunrise conditions. Best of luck and thanks for watching!
@@colinstalker nice one TY
@@colinstalkeryour right, what a great app.
What a gorgeous location with easy access. You don't always get that! It was funny how serene it was in front of you and so noisy behind!! Good lesson on how to use the horizon and tell a story as well. Loved the variety using different days. The black and whites had good contrast as well. Couldn't pick a favorite!
Thank you, Juanita 😊 There was a time when I passed it every day on my way to work. I always kept my eye on the conditions as it's one of those locations that just works well at sunrise. Have a great week 😀
Such a beautiful place mate
Thanks, mate, one of my favourites for sure😍
Another ripper set of photos mate. And a great video. The only thing I don't like is I wasn't there shooting beside you. 😊
Ha ha, thanks so much, John. It's a great spot when the conditions suit for sure. Thanks for watching. All the best🙏
What a beautiful composition. You certainly aren't deprived of subjects to shoot. Well done Colin and keep up the good work mate.
Thanks Geoff, yes mate it is a great area with so much on offer. Just trying to find something new is always fun. Have a great week mate 👍
another great video and top draw photography cant wait for the next adventure
Bryan, thanks for watching and your feedback, mate 👍
I think you've probably captured that lighthouse from every vantage point worth taking 😅 Great example of going back time and again to a place you enjoy, and really working the scene! Always enjoy you taking us through your thinking and process in detail, Colin 🙏 Loved your photo @ 10:50 - must have been close to what you had in mind?! 👏😀📸
Thank you, Valerie! I always appreciate your thoughts. Yes, you're right I think I have done it to death, but I can't resist. Yep, that shot at 10.50 was a close as my mind imagined but then again, we are never satisfied are we lol. Have a wonderful week!
Fabulous captures and video Colin........it is just so good to see your images of the Central Coast! Looking forward to your next instalment, cheers.......Dave 😁
David, thanks, mate. I value your opinion. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel, hopefully more soon 😊
Very creative, Colin! Amazing how many different compositions you have gotten of this one lighthouse!
Juanita, thank you 😊 It's such a wonderful subject piece I have to try and convince myself to try elsewhere. Somehow, it just keeps drawing me back 😆
Beautiful work Colin. Absolutely amazing!
Robyn, thank you so much for watching and your kind feedback!
Beautifully captured, good colour and great reflections.
Ross, thanks so much for watching! I appreciate your feedback 😊

Great video and sunset 👍🙂

@@colinstalker 👍🙂
The pastel colors were really beautiful. It goes to show you don't always need the dramatic reds! Good job doing minimalist long exposure!
Juanita, thank you. It was a lovely afternoon to be by the lake. Thank you for your ongoing support!
