GR86 HKS HiPower Spec L Exhaust Install

Today we are fitting a HKS HiPower Spec L Exhaust to my friend Charlie's GR86. His car is new and fresh out of the dealer, so unfortunately we have to keep it under 4000rpm until the running in period is over, but that doesn't stop us from modifying it! And the biggest improvement to be made is by swapping out the far too quiet stock exhaust system for a nice lightweight HKS system. Superb! #ga...

Hey man did you have any backfiring with this? My idle is backfiring like crazy and have a limp mode at 3krpm
No, sounds like you have a different issue, have you chucked a code reader on? Could be maf related, try unplugging them and seeing if it makes much difference
@@leedfollowMy tuner gave up lol. Checked and replaced coils, sparks, injectors, power going to injectors too. He said no timing or cam/crank sensor issues, and afr is fine, but I did check the computer and crankshaft sensor came up last night. Now I'm looking for random things. Do we have crank and cam angle and position sensors?😅 There's definately a misfiring going on in cylinder 5...comp test is fine tho. It's a bloody annoying one 😅
dream exhaust on my '23 BRZ, great video! is this the Spec L2 or just the L? I believe the L2 is updated for the newer twins, not sure if the fitment or sound is the exact same but I know they're cross compatible.
I believe its the later L2
My car runs perfectly until i put gas in it. Have you experienced this. My code is 0443. I have changed the purge valve and the purge valve solenoid, and now I'm stuck help if you can
Maybe are this ultralegerra not Rays 😂😂😂,
Huh? No. Ultraleggaras are cheap wheels made by OZ. These are “Rays”. Rays 57xtremes. Rays are way more expensive/premium than OZ wheels.
This was owned by auto Alex and now is for sale again less than 5 k lol is it worth it ?
Yeah we’re friends with Alex. We sold it to Taylor who then gave it to Rory and then they Auctioned it off via the AutoAlex channel. It’s changed hands a lot… is it worth £5k?…. Depends if you are able to fix it yourself or not. If you need to give it to a garage to fix it’ll become very expensive very fast.
Thanks for the video gents - very helpful for my own install this week. Cheers.
Many thanks!
Did this help with car moving slightly when on and off full throttle? Great vid. Thanks
Cheers. Yes definitely. A noticeable reduction in movement when going on/off throttle.
Is it normal for the new sensors to throw these codes after you replace them for the first few driving cycles?
Nope, afraid not. If you cleared the codes before you fitted the new sensors then you definitely shouldn’t see the codes return. Its possible your new sensor is bad. You could clear the codes then switch it around with one of the sensors from the other side of the engine. If the code then moves to a different place then you know thats the issue.
Stubbled across your channel.... I'm am looking forward to your build.
Welcome aboard :D

Great vid I think these seem better than a similar type that use a air tank as have seen people say that this can leak plus another thing to go wrong a simple 1 ram system seem best just got to think about 240v or 12v
I went 240v as was never going to use them too far from the garage, I'd say 12v would work great for working at the track it if you are a mobile mechanic etc
It's good that the project is coming along. I'm in the middle of this swap at the moment, got the engine in the bay and am gonna do first start next week after work. Wish me luck!
Are you using the BRZ/86 manual box with your ez30? If so, I know you can bolt the box to engine with some modifications but do you know if the gearbox mounts to its original position and then it can use the original tail shaft or is a custom gearbox mount and custom tail shaft needed?
Nothing custom is required. Everything bolts up.
Cool stuff :) good luck!
@@jordaneversen3147 Okay so I'm using the original Auto Transmission. But the only modification I had to do to the gearbox to get it to fit is notch the EZ30 block to let the starter motor fit. One of the starter motor bolts also doesn't thread through to the block anymore so I had to tap a thread into the gearbox to get the starter motor to mount solidly. I've seen another guy mount his ez30 to the original manual transmission though. He basically had to make the same modifications.
Will be using raptor headers or making something yourself? It would be awesome to see some custom stepped headers like F1 and an x pipe
Still planning on using the Raptor headers with an off the shelf 86 exhaust and mid-pipe. Its going to be easier for other people to follow my installation guide if I stick to off the shelf parts. But I will need to weld myself up a Y-pipe with a catalytic converter because there isn’t anything already out there that fits.
Thanks for the update! Love seeing the progress
Thanks. Its great to be actually progressing now! :)
How did you manage to get it throught the MOT with a decat pipe installed lol
It doesn’t have a decat pipe. It’s got a sports cat.
ive got the duo version great bit of kit mate pays for itself
I’ve used it so much more than I ever thought I would!
@@leedfollow yup the button on top of the spray nozzle is to take of the clear plastic sheild so you can clean under it people dont relize how much dirt is in there seats ,,i also have a full blown vax carpert cleaner thats a good bit of kit
Great video, I see it was uploaded a year ago. How are you getting on with them? Best regards.
They are really useful bits of kit, for the 370z they were bang on, if I'm being honest on some cars it can be a pain to get it in the air, for example if your very low you have to put it on blocks etc etc, if you are just doing a quick brake job it's a bit excessive but for jobs like exhaust or extensive servicing/work etc etc they are well worth it
I sent an image of te37 to my supplier in china. 2 days later we have a digital creation of the wheel. Month and a half later I have a 1 to 1 forged wheels fake but literally the same everything, forged and all even engraving on spokes. Could care less what people think
Reason why reps are so obvious is because they do them in bulk….easy to get caught as I’m sure it’s illegal. On the other hand if they just make the one set then send them right to you…no problem
Thats fine if you know it’s fake. But if you paid the money for legit wheels you’ll want it to be legit.
@@leedfollow no for the fake forged wheels not at all. 1300 for full set. Only way you will know they’re fake is by stickers and looking at the inside hub and seeing there is no certifications within the Hub milling. 100 percent you will not know by just looking at face as it has all correct millings
@Candybuiltsi no thats not what I meant. I meant if you pay genuine price you’ll want genuine. So best to always buy from a reputable seller with a history of selling genuine goods sourced directly from the manufacturer
Can this sensor being bad cause the car to feel even more underpowered than it usually is? Cause I got these codes recently and it will go from feeling fine to having to floor it to go anywhere.
Yeah definitely. Sounds like you need to change at least one of them.
Do you need to torque the strut braces down?
You should do yes. Just to factory torque settings.
How much is that couldnt find it online
@WanQer1 unfortunately I wouldn’t know now as I sold the MR2 a year ago.
@@leedfollow Ok, thanks anyways 👍

Could you tell me what the two thick black cables above the handbrake cables are. They look like brake pipes ?
@marcfrankel3946 they are the shifter cables that connect the gear knob to the gearbox.
Brilliant, top man.Great help & video. Can you change fuel pump by dropping tank rather than do it from luggage compartment. What do you think is easier ?
@marcfrankel3946 i’d say its probably easiest to change the fuel pump from inside the cabin rather than drop the tank. You’d probably still need to disconnect the wiring/pipes from inside the interior first anyway before you can drop the tank.
Hands at 9-3, keep hands on the wheel unless it really snaps or you reach the limit where your arms hit each other. Always look at your exit point and stare where you want the car to go, focus on the weight of the car and steer to keep it as stable as possible but use throttle to curl out from the apex to the exit point. Hopefully see you about at a few next year 🤟
The man, the legend ;) Long time no see dude :) How much for a 1 to 1 tuition? :D lol I still need to come check out the Coffee Lounge!
Nice video mate. Would enjoy an Rx8 drift series
Thanks!
I drive GT86 myself and I've been on few track days and please correct me if I am wrong, but in my opinion it's too much opposite lock applied during loosing of rear end which in sudden gaining of grip caused shift of weight and then your mate just lost it. Another thing is position of hands on steering wheel. I know that shuffling steering wheel is easiest way to operate but actually keeping 9-3 position of hands on steering wheel helps a lot of controlling a car. And with good siting position, body straight and close enought to steering wheel you can reach 3/4 of a turn of steering wheel each way, so in most fast driving on track applications is enough. Also I know it's different car but what I found on mine 86 during loosing rear end is just letting go of my steering wheel slightly, slip through hands to kind of self centered itself and avoiding that sudden shift of weight which unsettle a car.
Owning both I can confirm the 86 is far easier and more forgiving when the back end breaks loose. The RX8 is a lot more twitchy and can catch you by surprise if you’re not careful.
the clear lenses work well if you are out in the dark. it would look silly wearing sunglasses when the sun is down. I have a pair some something like these I just got and recording at night is decent as long as there are street lamps. so the clear lenses would work well
Good point :) Thanks for the share!
What car is this mate?
Thats the MR2 Roadster
Great channel mate, I'm glad I came across it. Cheers.
Thanks! Glad to have you onboard!
I think Toyota should have offered the 2 GRFE 3.5 L V6 as an option.
I have thought that maybe in future a 2GR or 1UR/2UR would be a good swap. But in order to stick with the original spirit of the car an EZ30/36 would be more appropriate and simpler to install :)
This is really exciting. You're building what I've been daydreaming about. I can't wait to watch your progress. I have a couple thoughts though. You mention the need to do a brake upgrade. I know at least some of the BRZ's got the performance package, which provided Brembo brakes. I was wondering if that isn't suitable for your uses, or I guess curious to know more about your intentions regarding brakes. Also, with the need for an upgraded clutch I wonder how that will improve pedal feel. Having owned an FRS, I know it was on the lighter side. The right choice could make for a really nice clutch pedal feel. Can't wait to see what you pick. Looking forward to seeing what you get into, and I really appreciate the level of detail you are going into.
Thanks. We’ll start with OEM (except the clutch) and see how we go, upgrading things where necessary.
Im keen for the next video. Hopefully its not far away
Still on its way :) Just got a few other things to do first and then i’ll resume this project :)
Most video editing software has video stabilization features that you can use to stabilize in post.
Indeed, but generally its rubbish. Better to have in-device stabilisation.
@@leedfollow Action camera stabilisation would be better but I don't think they can squeeze it into small glasses just yet so post stabilisation is the only option if you want to smooth out your footage. I hear that Google Photo has some decent post stabilisation options as well as Davinci Resolve which has a free version I believe.
@PINACI i’ll just be waiting for the hardware to move with the times. There are glasses coming in the near future with built in stabilisation
Great video will help when I got to replace mine thanks
Glad it helped
Just a heads up, the 6 speed was never sold in the US.
I didn’t even know you guys got this car in the US!
Would this be a easy swap for a brz.here in the usa my motor just blow looking for a replacement
Unfortunately until I’ve completed the swap I wouldn’t be able to tell you how easy it is exactly but in theory its a very straightforward swap.
The legacy radiator is height 13.78in and width 27.2in the stock Frs 86 BRZ is height 14in and width 25.56in with a little modding i think it will work
Stock 86 radiator is fine. No need to try to fit a Legacy radiator in there. But thanks anyway.
@leedfollow you will have to do extra Plumbing I believe. The legacy radiator has two outlets. I just thought it would look cleaner 🤷♂️
Cheers for the video. I know the jack will have a margin of error but you cut it a little fine with the weight limit? My bad, I assumed 3500 in the model number was 3500lb as they're American. These are only for small, (ish), cars though. Anything around E-Class size, probably need top look elsewhere to to jack pint spread.
They are 3.5t so can take most weight, they do an extension so you can put longer cars on
@@leedfollow Yeah maybe. For me though when I’m doing stuff like that I don’t really want to use ‘add ones’. That applies even if those add ones are made to go with the product. For example I’d use only one block and not two and of course no extensions. A little OCD maybe.
burg eltz,hald hour drive,magnificent castle
Yup, all very good places to visit if you have the time.
Mine doesnt automatically switch in. What am I missing? I cant find any setting for it.
Probably isn’t going to be a setting. The reverse switching is usually voltage controlled. Did you run the 12v feed from the back of the reverse light to the reverse trigger cable on the headunit? This is the issue that I had and I mentioned it in my video at the 8min mark. You need to supply 12v to the reverse trigger to tell the headunit you have put the car into reverse. Easiest way to do that is take power from the back of the reversing light.
Love the white spray all over the engine bay: Somebody tried to refurbish their headlights using a power tool... I know. I've done the same mistake! On a side note, I've got the MK3 RRP coils and they have been fantastic so far.
Cool stuff :) Good to know!
I got PO456 code and replacing the gas cap did not fix anything. Do you think this will get rid of the CEL? I was trying to fuel a week ago, and the pump will not let me fuel. What causes that?
If you can't put fuel in I'd guess it's a venting issue with tank and charcoal canister area, wouldn't put it down as anything electrical
@@leedfollow So, I was testing my evap solenoid and realized it doesn't have the issue where it is always opened. However, I realized it is not opening up even after about 5 minutes of running the engine (it is not sucking). I am assuming it is staying closed which is causing my CEL to come on. The passenger side of the evap solenoid should be open and i should be able to feel the sucking after running my engine on idle for awhile right? (how long does it take the purge valve to open up and vacuum?)
I own a black MRS with black soft top, I always know having a red soft top would make it look even more like a Boxter...👍
Totally :) Pretty sure Toyota positioned the MR2 as a cheaper Boxster alternative.
Rotary engines are a expensive dead technology but glad you got it running
Thanks, but the technology isn’t dead. We’re probably going to see more new rotary engine cars from Mazda in the future.
@@leedfollow maybe with regular gas and no oil additives needed and last more than 85000 miles lol maybe
We all know you don’t maintain a rotary like a piston engine but they can last a long time if maintained correctly. There are piston engines out there that don’t make it to 85000 miles. And BMW piston engines commonly burn oil like rotary engines.
Roughly how far forward (fron where car originally parked) does it push the car once raised?
It's just under a foot I'd guess
Nice ride bro love my z
Thanks ✌️
Looking forward to the next episode.
It’s coming I promise :) I’ve sideways steps into another project at the moment and all will be revealed soon!
Just bought a 2001 with 79000 miles. $10k out the door. Not much rust on mine. Love the car!
Cool stuff. I was just unlucky with mine I guess. Lived its whole life near the sea.
Thank you very much; I too was dreading doing this but it is a huge help to see it done

Those quick shifts to keep below 4000 during engine break-in 🤣 I'm experiencing the same myself right now!
Will be worth it though :)
The massive downside the Ray Bans is the forward-facing LED which cannot be disabled
Ah ok cool. Didn’t know that!
It can be disabled, It's all over TH-cam how to easily do it. The downside for me with the Raybans is that they only record in vertical.
