Smokin' Hot Community Service with Craig Miller
At nearly 70 years old, my guest, Craig Miller, is one of the oldest firefighters in the world. He doesn’t get paid for it, and he wasn’t even sure he wanted to do it, but the question that gnawed at him was, “If not me, who?”
In 2023, he shared a startling statistic: “Volunteers comprise some or all of the staffs of more than 85% of fire companies across the U.S., according to an estimate by the National Volunteer Fire Council.” This eye-opening revelation highlights how much responsibility we thrust upon volunteers to keep us all safe.
The funny thing is that Craig could’ve easily been voted least likely ever to battle flames. He’s a public radio guy-you know, the coffee-sipping, tote-bag-toting, academic type. Or, at least, he was, having spent more than 40 years as a broadcaster and journalist. He launched and edited the award-winning Climate Watch multimedia initiative for KQED radio in San Francisco. He’s also an accomplished writer/producer of television documentaries and even co-created a show called “House Detective” for HGTV.
In 2019, he moved from California’s Bay Area to the Catskill Mountains of New York. The local firefighters pursued his services and eventually succeeded in attaining them. But the pleasure has been all Craig’s. Volunteering as a firefighter has become one of the most gratifying features of his entire life.
I spoke with him again after our interview, and he wanted to amend one of his answers. Rather than labeling himself principally as a firefighter, he wanted to go on the record as an “evangelist for volunteerism and community service.” I understand and appreciate the distinction, but when that 911 call rings out in the middle of the night, I’m not sure Craig the evangelist is getting out of bed, but Craig the firefighter sure is. One might even say Craig the firefighter is a damn hero.

Today, their story is a testament to the power of resilience and...
Tweaking Your Anxiety Settings with Dr. John Delony
มุมมอง 28921 วันที่ผ่านมา
We live in a 21st-century world, and our brains haven’t quite caught up. They’re designed to look out for the Saber-toothed tiger, not a million dings and beeps from smartphones. It’s no surprise that anxiety is a massive problem in modern-day life. But Dr. John Delony says anxiety isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s just an alarm system to keep us safe, and we can learn to tweak the settings. ...

Really appreciate Mary Beth's insight! She knows her stuff
...nice skin albeit a bit pale. Impeccible teeth and apparently no time to shave. I can always tell a doctor by their hands... im leaning "Yes" you are a doctor at Cedar-Senai
I have called social security 5 times gotten 5 different answers, and some just outright. Told me they don't know. Social care is the worst people to call to ask questions. I don't know about hard working, but they're terrible explaining and helping seniors
This is hilarious. These scenarios are so accurate and true. I've seen these happen, especially when the old man turns around and marry somebody 30. And she right away has a child, so she can lock in her 401k with him😅
I never had a pension working for small time businesses, especially in the dental field. They don't have pensions very few sick days very few vacation days😢
Please someone explain if the spouses are working for government, particularly prosecutors attorneys for the government, the city. How does that work cause? I understand they get a pension and at like teachers they don't get social securities. Do people that work for the government? Such as prosecutors and attorneys that work for the government. Do they get pensions and no social security? I can't seem to find information and social security when you call them. Have no idea
They should have gave homeless people all over the country lasagna
Construction program in the city of LA…what, are they getting another $2,000,000 singular public toilet??
Ty. For this information
Love the advice from J Delony.
so?
Some notable exceptions notwithstanding, Phil’s improvisations had a juvenile center of gravity. An auto aficionado at Florida’s Amelia Concours d'Elegance ejaculates on the seat inside a sexy Alfa Romeo. Jay Santos secretly films neighborhood women undressing. Steve Bosell defecates into the mouth of a sleeping coworker. Jim Sadler explains the pros and cons of sticking your thumb up your opponent’s rectum when wrestling. Phil’s scatological humor (“stick it up hard left and twist it”) isn’t classy. It appeals heavily to eight-to-sixteen-year-old males. No wonder Phil only has a cult following.
Thank you so much for your wonderful advice ❤❤❤
Thank you for having me on, Wes! Always fun hanging out with you 👍
Thanks for joining us! Had a great time

Never trust your heart or your head they will always lie to you . Only trust your gut your gut instinct will get you through life🫡
He immediately forgets his instinct and goes into the Porta potty
My instincts are why i have 6 kids with 4 women.

RENOUNCE citizenship and be free. 1 all of us half accounts with money that's being held in your name and ships in Puerto Rico there are trillions of dollars out there everybody's got millions of dollars being held in Puerto Rico forYOU 1❤
This is terrible can't you hear yourself you act like it's good news but it's really bad news how much they cut your check and what you there's a income that earning stipulation to get your whole Social Security why is that your income has nothing to do with you retiring and getting your Social Security that's your money you should be able to get it all back and all the taxes we pay we should get our we should get them all back cuz they're borrowing money from us but they're not they're keeping us and we're slaves
Well you don't have a choice to put Social Security and not that I know of. And I don't know when people are going to wake up and start claiming who they are and get their money because there's tons of millions and trillions of dollars out there for everybody I think it's wrong that you don't get your full amount of Social Security.
I think it's ridiculous to make somebody work until they're almost dead to get their retirement.❤ also they ought to give us all the money they've been holding back on us and sending the Puerto Rico. ❤ yeah you're right as long as they live which will probably be a couple years after they finally get you know their retirement that's what happened to my friend Billy😂 he died at 65 and he just got in his Social Security
Access funds? You mean everybody's account that is in the Social Security in Puerto Rico and the Federal Reserve accounts that are in every single person's name in the United States so they're going to dip into that right
Arigato :) I am retired from UNhappy money - No need to retire from HAPPY money... hello HAPPY money :) I will live - thank you, Ken!
This was a good video, maybe teach economics , thanks🌎😇
wondering why you have not mentioned nitric oxide. Dr. Bryan makes it sound so important
Good infos thank u
This was so informative. Thank you both so much.👍🏽
Ken Honda is a truly humble man to share his time/knowledge with many podcasts and channels. He has sold millions of book. I have bought Happy Money myself. This message about money wounds is unique to Ken. Good to listen and understand even more.
Thank you Ken Honda
Americans are being LIED to about WHO is causing SS to be insolvent. The TRUTH is that MILLIONAIRES and BILLIONAIRES are taking out more money than they put in. This is a "slush fund" for them, not the sole income (like 99% of seniors who have NO retirement income). Warren Buffet (and other BILLIONAIRES) get the max $5,000 a month ($60,000 a year). Any poor senior can live off that. But they also get MILLIONS in retirement funds, dividends, capital gains. They pay a fraction into the system (taxed up to $165,000 of their 100 BILLION wealth). Elites are destroying SS.
The most talented radio talk show host in American, and likely world, history. Wit, intelligence but beyond the pale, which made it delicious. A genius.
I can’t believe it didn’t bring up he plays Principal Vagina on Rick and Morty ! Phil is such a amazing talent and legend
I’ve been waiting since the mid 90’s for Phil to get saved. Catholic won’t get it. Ye must be born again. John 3:3. Read the Bible.
I am wondering if you have ever heard about something referred to as "lookback" ? (Not as in the lookback period for Medicaid.) A friend of my husband mentioned that we shouldn't fail to do this as we get close to taking social security, but i can't find any information about it. I think he was talking about for me, the spouse of the primary earner. Don't want to ask him, for several reasons.
In my opinion it is a bad idea for men to wait till 70 to draw SS. The Current Average life expectancy for U S males is about 78 years. START SS at your SSNRA and draw your SS for 3 years before age 70. It takes about 10.5 years to make up the difference break even point in SS between 67 and 70 years old. Knowing these numbers why would I leave a $100,000 on the table before drawing any SS ? In my opinion waiting till 70 is for suckers.
So the Govt has created a Monopoly with Medicare total scam ! The Govt should have no roll in our Healthcare system. The fees for the coverage is just another taxes on all of us.
Discovered Ken Honda and Happy Money on this podcast! 👍…
What about taking social security before fra until fra and then suspending until age 70 to grow payment by 8%/yr? It is on the website if you look it up but two people from social security assured me this was not true until I referred the second one to the provision. How scary how little you can depend on their knowledge of the law
Continuing to raise retirement age is unfair!!! People drop dead waiting for it. It's ridiculous. What they need to do is let people work without penalty. Then they can continue to charge for SS that way!!!
I need to know if I was supposed to sign up 3 months before 62 if thats what i decide to do. Also, noone talks about if a spouse becomes disabled at 58, how does that affect the spousal amount that the wife can collect.
This is the truth
Here's a great question - How does a teacher of almost 40 years, only receive about $2500 per month in SS?
Poor planning on career choice income when viewed through the lens of a livable retirement.
Most teachers are government employees and receive pensions, not SS.
You had every weekend & Summers off for 40 years. Talk to the hand.
I’ve been diligently working, saving and contributing towards early retirement and financial freedom, but since covid outbreak, the economy so far has caused my portfolio to underperform, do I keep contributing to my 401k or look at alternative sectors to meet my goals?
keep contributing! I'd suggest you consider financial advisory at this point in time, remember you are in for the long haul
I'm in line with having an advisor oversee my day-to-day investing cos, my job doesn't permit me the time to analyze stocks myself. Thankfully, my portfolio has just 5X in barely 5 years, summing up nearly $1m after subsequent investments to date.
bravo! I appreciate the implementation of ideas and strategies that result to unmeasurable progress, thus the search for a reputable advisor, mind sharing info of this person guiding you please?
She goes by '‘NATALIE ANN BRINKMAN’ I suggest you look her up online. To be honest, I almost didn't buy the idea of letting someone handle growing my finance, but so glad I did
Phil is one of the most talented people alive! He's comedy gold!
