You need to have a part in the machine to probe. It will fail every time without the part. When you probe a part the machine is looking for the end mill to make electrical contact with the part. You need the probe wire connected to the part. The probe wire has 5 volts on it. The machine is looking for that 5 volts on the end mill. When it sees the voltage on the first axis it then repeats the action on the second axis. Then on to the third axis. When it completes the probing of all three axis (X, Y, and Z) the machine knows precisely where the part is located. It will ten be able to make accurate cuts on the work piece. I am not sure which order it uses to do the probe. My guess would be X then Y then Z. If your part is anodized or cerakoted you will need to remove the coating where the probe wire is attached in order to make good electrical contact. I think most guys use the grip screw hole to attach the probe wire. I would run a 1/4”-28 tap into the hole to clean the coating out. I hope this helps.
