Behaving under manners on 8x3 MA prop. Not fully loosened up but obviously up to the usual standards … contrapiston still tight, as you see! Near-death moment with fingers meeting prop. No blood 🤪

Perry carb not correctly adjusted. Draws fuel OK but cuts out after prime exhausted. Also helps if glow plug connected to power. 🤪 Thank you for your attention … as Lady Chop Chop once said. Gonna try an Irvine carb. Will revert. Da da da Orange no good. Want green.

Skip to 2:45 to miss false starts. Badly adjusted NVA and slow needle. Frothy 5%nitro fuel. Dont pressurise tank this way when engine is running. Been there, done that😂. Plenty of negative comments about these engines. This one’s a gem.

It was my main Xmas present in the 60s going towards a team racer project - but I could not start it whatever I tried. I sold it a year later (upsetting) and much much later realised the fuel had gone off. It seems that despite being in a metal can the ether somehow escaped.
A superb engine. I also moved mine on, much to my regret. Swopped it for an overpriced heap of scrap! Never learn ….
This was my first engine same colour too in 1994 It was an ok engine didn’t like the cold if you were using it in the winter an electric starter was much needed , likes castrol straight to 5%, for a 40 size it has most power you will get out of a 40 pulls like a train, my engine was working ok flew it for 3 years on original carb, in fact I have another one here the same brand new it’s going into another model in the next 3 weeks
its a belter alright … 50/50 chance of getting a dud one, so it seems we both were lucky! 💥
Do these like to run really lean like the other Redfin sideports?
Not sure. Still running it a bit rich -early days. I will read rhe review by Maris Disrtlers. He has something to say about this. I will get back to you soon.
To quote Distlers: “…mixture adjustment with an easy compression is insensitive and can be set considerably richer without baulking …. Esp. with smaller props it will continue running with lean mis-fire well past the optimum fuel to air point.” So, yes I think id the answer to tour question. I prefer to run a little rich for the small bearings and rod.
Love the smell of ether in the morning
Another masterpiece from Alex Phin’s stable.
just so. a real sweet engine.
Todays correction and clarification: 746 watts/hp! Apologies.
Looking forward to seeing the run vid
Curb …. Have to wait for a quiet sunday afternoon. Or when the Euros start, perhaps? Also must take off the muffler 👽
Update on the update … Perry pump not required for bench running.
Update: Now reassembled, new Dykes ring fitted. Pesky Perry carb sorted and it runs like a good ‘un. Video to follow. 💥🚒
Made in Kimry,, not Minsk. Apologies to Ludmilla!

Ee … grazie 🤣
Where can apex person get a diesel engine
eBay, or go to PAW or redfin on the internet
The only downside to these powerful high reviving engines is they are more difficult to start. The old side port designs plod away but start first flick if settings are somewhere near close. Great to see this iconic engine running, thanks for posting.
Indeed, but there are far worse starters than the Ollie! Old hands say if it doesnt start first time, put it back in the box … Revving quiet well on a Taipan 8x4 and D1000 fuel
Correction … racing brew it says! 🤪
It’s a gem. Thanks for posting.
It is. Ive moved it on, but it will be giving good service somewhere
A tribute indeed
His cardboard drones are pretty deadly too 💥
Mind yer digits JJ.

That is n diesel engine ,it is a glow-engine. Try to see the diferens.
Ah yes, so it is! Can’t see too well,, but at least I can spell … 🤪
Are we going to hear it roar ?
Aye. All in good time. Its just gargling for the moment. 20k revs soon🕺💥 can you hear it up there? 120 Db at least. Neighbours restless. Wimps.
Is this the first time you try to start a diesel-engine?
Disappointing comment, Nathan. After all Ive done for you👽
It’s an early MDS produced for sale in Germany.
hey Derek! your knowledge is encyclopaedic! Respect. That explains why so many German flyers have four fingers 🚑
Thanks John. It looks like an older black composite Irvine .40 carb has been installed as well.@@johnchadwick3237
Is there not a risk of that electric starter bending the crankshaft?
It can happen. Dont like them and wouldnt use one on a smaller engine. This engine has a con rod thick as your arm … Trick is to avoid priming, a very light touch and apply starter with prop wound BACK to compression, so that it has half a turn of so before hitting comp. If it doesnt fire try again. Dont keep cranking it. Works for me.
Aha … just seen Ive already said that!🤭
@@johnchadwick3237 ah sorry john👍👍
Bare fingers ! That ain't right, you'll get hurt.
Seven and counting (down …)🤪 no pain, no gain!
မိုက်တယ် 😮
The bar is used when the engine was mounted inverted, so the glow fuel would not extinguish the glow element.
Ah yes … seems logical! 💥
Nice!!! Just took mine out to have a look see never a drop of fuel has been in this engine.. bought many years ago ,it has the silencer wirh it ,ivine decals, but no instructions. But i can get it going with 2 1/ 2 clicks open and then adjust... would like to have rhe manual.well done!
Thanks. I have some instructions. maybe could post a vid here. let me know.
Very nice diesel! Starts easily too. Is that an rc carb on it?
Indeed it is! Its just a standard venturi but with Alan Greenfield’s patent spray nozzle. Settings all wrong but I wasnt going to adjust while holding the phone … Been there, done that, visited A&E. 🚑
My mistake … NOT an R/C carb! 🦃😂
There seems to be a masochistic side in the genetic makeup of all diesel lovers me included. Gloves off and give it a good talking to, and just inhale that vapour.
Mind over Matter. Now proven!
How much money dollars cost this engine

Amyl,Nitrate + ether = 🤪🕺💥
Perhaps the ether vapour emanating from the open tube helps with the dialogue.
Thank you a lot for this video, I recently got one of these engines, but I have not been able to try it yet. Looking forward to doing so!
Good luck, hope you do better than I did ….
Nice work from the forge.
Indeed, clever guy our Tom!
Just fired it up, vid to follow. Vibrates like a good ‘un, perhaps the long stroke, or the fact the prop has one arm 2mm longer than the other! Seems balanced, however.
Try a 7x4 prop.
Wilco … five fingers to go!
Muito top ❤🎉
Penny slot bore/stroke: 12.7, 19.05mm. ED West is around 14, 13.7 (guesstimate). Max revs, 9K and 25K possibly.
Correction: Fiery of course has a vid of one!😀
The Mk. 1 was the humble E.D. Bee :). This is notwithstanding the fact the E.D. Bee was released after the E.D. Mk. 2 “Penny Slot”.
Get the to a smithy, and let's see this one roar again
@@fiery1962 ah … true ED logic! Many thanks for that info.jc

Irvine recommended the K&B idle bar plug for their glow engines.
Thanks Derek, starts well with standard plug. It was the diesel that I had trouble with!
Superb modern diesel engine from Alan.
Well done Derek, I guess you had a head start! Having a wee bit of a contest with this one … Fired first flick but easily flooded and a very sensitive NVA. A bit like a thoroughbred horse, perhaps. Im using 30% castor fuel and I wonder if its too thick? Alan supplied some of his Zip, so I will try again tomorrow with that. More later … Sorry but unable to send you the prize. Our mail (ex-Royal) is still not sending stuff abroad! Cunning Brexit plot. You will have to do with a hearted comment … aah! jc
It is indeed an ED by West 12 diesel. Alan Greenfield -who designed thr ED Super Hunter back in the seventies makes this rather special engine. I will post a vid of it running as soon as I have sorted the fuel pressurisation. This is the first diesel I have come across to need tank pressure. But hey, Im just a novice.
Lovely. It may have been abused if it needed a re-bore.
Hmm … seemed un-run, but you could be right. On the strength of your ED by West engine vid (Alan reckons its a 52 btw) Ive ordered a 012 diesel! First of a run of 12 seemingly. Looks fantastic. Watch this space. jc
Sorry, Derek ignore that about 52 …. Had a grey moment.🦮
No worries John. We all have those moments☺️
Hi Derek. Update …. From what I hear now, after GC’s death lots of old stock parts were sold off. A aN Others assembled bits and sold on. Perhaps lacking the maestro’s touch for eg piston/liner marriage? This could be one such
That one goes
Aye
must add a postscript here. Doing some more research I fear I have omitted the signal contribution to ED engines of Alan Greenfield The Super Hunter, among others, was his design and realisation -the most powerful 3.5 cc of the day and still a belter. Alan is going strong today and building excellent engines under the name of ED by West.
