Currently i run everything off one outlet, starred off to a few triplite strips. Nothing else on the circuit but a lamp i think. I do use a UPS for the pc. My interface shares the same power strip as my console, but the pc is on ups. Seem ok?

Nice topic... I will probably need more power soon, but I'm thinking of running a 50 amp circuit and then getting a rack mount power distro that's usually used for live sound. Surge protectors will be powered by the power distro. I have to do more research to make sure it's safe for permanent installs though.

I have two surge x power conditioners that use 20 amp. I'm using an adapter right now but looking into getting the circuit breakers changed. How much did that cost? Just a ballpark?

You said a mouthful. I see so many "here's my one-size-fits-all vocal chain", "here are my plugins and settings for vocals", etc., on TH-cam, even from established, award winning producers and mix engineers, who it should be noted produce things that sound like everything else being produced right now. Like you, I grew up on 80's radio (and it was glorious). The idea that a person is going to use the same recording chain and make the same EQ adjustments for dramatic soprano Ann Wilson, Contralto Anita Baker, Baritone Michael Stipe and Tenor (the late) Luther Vandross is ridiculous. You work with the artist in front of you at the time, which may mean trying different mics/preamp combinations and most certainly not applying "one size fits all" EQ adjustments and plugin chains. The less you can add to a great voice, the better (IMO). And I've seen mix engineers and producers make EQ cuts to a great voice to get it out of the way of a midrange instrument instead of EQing the midrange instrument to get out of the way of the voice. I can not only pick out a record mixed by Mutt Lange instantly, I can generally tell if I'm listening to a song he wrote. He has a distinctive style and no one else's production sounds like his production. I can't say the same for most producers. Hell, I can't say the same for most of today's popular musicians. There's nothing wrong with having a unique style, behind the desk or in front of it - especially if people like it and it gets you recognized. It separates a producer, mix engineer or even recording engineer from everyone else.

My first piece of gear was MPC 3000...in 1998 been getting gear ever since... I learned a major lesson don't buy gear unless a project pays for it...26 years later... I have about $120k worth of gear. and a dedicated studio. ....so I feel you.

You have not only some great outboard but also much of the most coveted outboard. If you ever have a bass player come into the studio, he or she will be thrilled to see that CL1b. And yes, the Manley Vari-mu puts a sheen on a finished song that's like nothing else. Very cool and love your SSL analog mixdown setup, real patchbay, etc. No one would walk into your studio and be disappointed. Super impressive!

I saw your expression when you said Vintage King (Michigan). 3 times they've sent me gear with issues that I had to repair. I believe that Alto Music doesn't charge sales tax.

All of that analog gear reminds me of being back in audio school. I appreciate the effort you put into your studio, but I would also appreciate seeing you work.

Yeah bro and here I thought I had a lot of gear but you have me beat 😂 I agree it gets addictive and it is great to have redundancies because each piece of kit does something slightly different and sometimes you just want it just because. I will take gear any day of over plugins plus it holds more value if you decide to sell it, provided the gear is quality. Hardware inspires me far more than any algorithm. By the way I can only imagine it gets a bit toasty in there and omg the cable management must be something of nightmares 😂.

Studio gear adds up quickly. I had to calculate mine. My studio is roughly that amount (gear alone) give or take a few hundred dollars. Cabling and powering gets crazy Lol. but after a while It's just instinct 😂.

I started on 2" & SSL 4k's 30+ years ago & began mixing ITB in '03. Frustrated w/the DAW sound, I picked up the SSL SIGMA & started adding to my collection.The difference between a hardware compressor on a line amp verses a plugin is vastly different. The DBX 160x / xt's will do wonders for drums. I have an LA2A + many other nice pieces & the DBX stands with 'em. Revive Audio have a mod the will get the 160 iterations very close to the Distressor. I love your setup!

Do you feel having so much gear hinders your ability to be more creative. I find in my case having multiple mics that I keep going between mics but not settling on one, leavinf it set up in position and gain staged ready to go. I think im just going to use two mics from now on. My Schoeps CMC5u and my SM7B and just forget about the rest. If i cant get a good spund from those then no other mic will help. Great seeing your channel growing ❤

So I record in a bad room with a bd mic I use auto tune as well. I agree you don’t need 10 plugins I used to have like 15 and I got down to six. But I understand why things could be a lot of little tweaks I’ve explained this to my mentor I take a death by 1000 cuts approach to mixing. Instead of making 1 big cut at 6db, I’ll make 3 cuts at 2db with 3 eqs it gives me a different type of control over the frequencies. That’s my take and my style you may disagree it’s all good it works for me

Did you also find the Urei at Guitar Center too? I saw one on there just the other day that I was considering buying.

Wow for some reason I never considered checking out the pawnshops for gear because the majority of my hardware is used or B-Stock. I frequently hit up Guitar Center, Vintage King, Reverb, Sweetwater and Ebay. There was a time you could rock with Craigslist but those days have long past.

With that many plugins on one track means you need to redo the take. Bring those videos back. By the way thank you for your service to this country 💪
