    I appreciate this video and would like to join a mentor group for remote assistance if that exists, I live in Vermont. I am very impressed by the quality of this video and the certification documentation on your website, so I will be joining the organization and will start my journey\preparation for the CI certification. I picked up my 1st fly rod in the 70s, love to cast, showing others the skills of fly fishing and tying, now I will become certified!

    An interesting variant on the F fly. Usually tied with a thread body and the wing extending only the length of the hook.

    One advantage of using CDC feather, including the rachis, as a body material is that the rachis is hollow!

    Sweet, Remember the Silver Award.

  • @RobbAngier
    @RobbAngier 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The recipe from the bronze handbook calls for silver wire not tinsel, two strands of peacock not more, 4 strands of goose or turkey for abdomen and 6 for wing case. It also says nothing about the rib needing to be secured to the bottom of the hook. The tier seems to indicate that the recipe needs to be followed exactly to please the evaluator. Where is this recipe from and why does it deviate from the handbook? I want to “please the evaluator”, so what to do? This video is on the official FFI site so there seems to be some inconsistency.

    • @fedflyfishers
      @fedflyfishers 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The recipe and video instructions were identical when the video was originally filmed. However, over time, various individuals have made "improvements" to them, leading to discrepancies between the two. Currently, there are plans to either re-shoot the video or update the book's instructions to align with the video. The Fly Tying Group is actively working on resolving this issue. In the interim, I recommend selecting an evaluator to discuss and resolve any differences.

    The recipe I have calls for only 4 fibers for the body, and 6 for the wing case. I was counting more being used in this video.

    • @jimking7400
      @jimking7400 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's consistency across the 3 submitted flies that matters. A larger hook may require more fibres to be visually similar to the less fibres used on a smaller hook. That's the way I've seen and heard it mentioned before.

    Well between You Gary and Doug Swisher doing those instructional videotapes for Scientific Anglers had a profound effect on my fly fishing I was 31 in '86 and Had been fly fishing since 1963 with much frustration. I became so much better thank you. The kids today have it so much better the education is so much more available. It was voodoo when I started. I have gotten old too. 67 and retired now.

    The camera expertise looks to be ...very old, outdated, as in 70's type. It's horrible. When I compare it to a Carlie Craven or a Barry Clark video, it's seriously lacking. That's not to say the video content was bad. The fly tying expertise was great, but a modern camera guy is needed here.
