This movie is a beautiful and intimate collaboration between Erin Gibson, Bryan Safi and myself. I began my career directing comedy documentaries (Comedians of Comedy, Zach Galifianakis Live At The Purple Onion, Super High Me), so after spending more than a decade directing scripted comedy on cable tv (remember cable tv?) I got the itch to back on the road. I wanted to spend my days lugging camera gear from hotel to hotel, venue to venue, being a fly on the wall with talented people whose company I cherish.
When Erin and Bryan announced their 2016 tour I pitched them a concept I'd always wanted to try, which was a concert film shot with only one camera. They agreed, so I went on tour with them as the sole crew member.
The movie features clips from Throwing Shade’s 2016 live shows, backstage footage and interviews with audience numbers (a discussion with women about the unjust requirement of wearing high heels to work is particularly notable). This is what Huffington Post had to say:
